5 star '20 Xavier Foster to visit today

Every year, I keep thinking we’ll be that one school that people say “how the hell did they get a 5 star to go there?” I Feel like we’re getting closer and closer. Don’t know about you guys, but I feel like a one and done would put us where we all want to be recruiting wise. Even if we don’t have a great season by overall record.

Just get him here, let him spend time with coaches and with guys like Johnson, Baker, McConnell and just hope they connect. Also, Mathis and Harper are moving in today at Rutgers.

Sometimes the potential future teammates are the best recruiters.

If Mathis and Harper mice in, is everyone on Campus? That would be great...

Xavier has a lot of big time schools recruiting him. We were not on any of the lists I saw within the last week. I think it is amazing that we have gotten a visit so quickly. Props must be given to our staff.

He cannot sign at the earliest until November 2019. It will be amazing if we ever landed a kid like this being a 5 star and the schools that have already offered him.

Great job by the staff and program to get a 5* kid on campus, especially from B1G territory out in Iowa. I think there is a pattern of how we are recruiting that gives me confidence this isn't just a token visit.

We can sell minutes to class of 2020 big men in a big way ...as only doicoure (sr) and Johnson (jr) are bigs on the 2020-2021 team

It’s why we sre gojng to be recruiting zona from BC hard

Most five-star prospects don't need to be sold playing time, unless you have a team full of them, they know they'll get it because of their talent.

Need to sell five-star guys on your system, how he'll be used and how you'll get him ready for the league.

And since his Uncle is OL Coach Blazek, I think RU catapults into his Top Five!

Do we get an early commit is the question?

Yes...but in this case, he would not only be getting lots of PT, he also has a path to be the man in the front court here...

It might be Anthony Davis in football where Rutgers won out over Ohio State.Vitale did a great job in getting Sellers over Notre Dame.

Yes, Phil was a Street & Smith's All American. Lloyd Moore was as well but he transferred in from Marquette as was Clarence Tillman who transferred in from Kentucky. In the 70's & 80's Street and Smith's was the very best college basketball magazine and had the best listings for the top high school basketball players in the country.

In the modern Era, Greg Echenique was a borderline 5 star when he committed before reclassification.

The Sellers' recruitment by Vitale was extraordinary. As most recall Sellers had already committed to Notre Dame. Vitale was relentless however. Sellers lived in the Howard HOuses in Brownsville - an extremely dangerous housing development in one of the most dangerous areas in the US, not just NYC. Vitale would constantly go to visit Sellers at home. Just picture this balding, funny looking white guy showing up in one of the most impoverished and violent all black neighborhoods in 1971-72. This was well before Vitale was a tv celebrity. No one knew who he was. Vitale actually showed enormous courage and grit to constantly visit Sellers at home. When one also considers that Notre Dame and Digger Phelps at the time were extraordinarily successful and popular, and RU was essentially unknown in athletics, Vitale's determination was inconceivable. My guess is the other RU coaches thought Vitale was insane. He persevered, however. It was one of, if not the best, recruiting victory ever.

What is also another part of the story is that Lloyd Free was a very close friend and neighbor of Sellers. Vitale would drive both Sellers and Free down to RU. Unfortunately for us we did not have any scholarships left to offer Free. What could have been.

Yes, Herve did make the Parade All American team after his senior season at St. Pat's. I forgot about that. Greg Echnique was never near the Top 30 in the country in any ratings that I saw. Myles Mack actually made the USA All American team after his senior season at St. Anthony. He was in their Top 30 in the country but everywhere else I think he was between about 80-120 if I can remember correctly. Rosario made the McDonald's All Star game and I think he had 17 or 19 points but he was only rated about 60-80 by most ratings.

At least ESPN had him in the Top Ten before reclassification. I’ll dig around & see if I can find the rest.

Thanks for finding this - I don't remember him being talked about that high at any point during his recruitment.

Looks like this was an early Top 100, though. Lots of change happened before the final list. It also mentions Dane Miller at #39 in that list, though he ended up outside the Top 100.

Of the players in the article vs. the final 2009 Top 100 ranking (in parens):
4 - Lance Stephenson (12)
6 - Dexter Strickland (27)
8 - Dominic Cheek (19)
9 - Greg Echenique (reclassified)
19 - John Henson (6)
22 - David Wear (36)
23 - Travis Wear (37)
39 - Dane Miller (NR)
46 - Omari Lawrence (NR)
53 - Durand Scott (43)
82 - Tamir Jackson (NR)
84 - Tevin Baskin (NR)
