Thanks to all the knuckleheads who made this event a disaster for law enforcement. Of course I never heard of any problems when I was a student when they were booking acts like the Indigo Girls.

I saw Big Audio Dynamite II, The Farm and Downtown Science circa 1991 when I was at Rutgers. No problem with the crowd. Although at times I wondered whether the park was designed to be filled with several thousand people jumping up and down.

RUPA still has a concert, on Friday Cash Cash played at the College Ave Gym, they call it Beats on the Banks. It was a really good crowd and a fun time. One of the three guys in the group is actually a Rutgers grad.

Ridiculous lineup and concert! And, IIRC, the last one held at that park DUE TO the fact that the (at the time) world's largest concrete park overpass (or whatever) was, literally, bouncing!

Indigo Girls, Pharcyde, and a reggae band from St. Croix. I only remember that last band because I interviewed them after their set. Big band. So I'm noting each of their names and the instruments they play for my notes, and their manager, who is standing there mixed in with them, says his name followed by "skin flute." I wrote it down and it took 30 seconds of them laughing at me before I processed it.

I saw Pharcyde in Breckenridge last winter. They are one of my favorite groups, and they were just as good last year as in the mid 90's.

No, there were was another after that: Digable Planets and the Lemonheads were the next year.

Misinformed post... Anyone that actually attended the more recent Fest's of the 2000's can tell you most of the people who went to those events didn't even go to Rutgers.

graduated just recently in 15'. I can 100% verify this. Most of it was people from towns all over as many of their friends went to RU. A lot of unnecessary trouble caused it to be terminated

Union St was a mess after. A lot of non students trying to get into great houses. Things got pretty nasty.

In 2011 I was taking the train from NYC to New Brunswick on the day of Rutgers Fest. The train was full of people going to Rutgers Fest. I doubt they were students.
The concert is for students, not freeloaders from New York City going to see Pitbull for the price of a train ticket

Actually, the singer of The Farm had a problem with the crowd. He kept yelling at us because we were moshing. The guy sounded like a Beatle and kept saying "no no no, it's about peace and love, not shoving everybody around".

Not only that, but most of the people who celebrated Rutgersfest didn't even go to the concert anyway, so the type of music is completely irrelevant. They could have booked the B-52s, Rick Astley, and Neil Sedaka, and the outcome would have been exactly the same. It became just an excuse for drinking all day and other debauchery.

I lived on Easton Ave. above Giovanneli's in 2010 and on my way home from work, I crossed the Rt. 27 bridge from Highland Park around midnight and didn't get to park my car until an hour later after giving up on finding a legal parking spot because there weren't any left and it took forever to get anywhere because there were crowds of people just hanging out in the streets since the sidewalks couldn't fit everyone.

In 2011, I was at a conference in Atlanta and my hotel roommates were students at the time. They got a text from RU saying that someone was shot on College Ave (we all woke up to the news).

Even when I was a student, Rutgersfest was a total s**tshow. So much smuggled booze, no security check or ID enforcement, and the cops and security would only act if there was a real fight. The bus rides back smelled strongly of spilled alcohol.

I always thought RUPA should hold concerts in the stadium. That way, they'd keep it only for students and make it a more controlled environment.

I was at that one. As much fun as we were having my crew and I decided to move closer to the George St. edge of the park after a while because we were afraid it was going to collapse onto route 18. The bouncing was very noticeable.

It was an absolute free-for-all. Just walk from the bus stop and walk in. A disaster waiting to happen, and it eventually did.
