William “Bucky” Hatchett set a record for catching three touchdowns in a game and was also the first Rutgers basketball player with more than 1,000 career points. He was elected president of the Class of 1950. In Baltimore for a January 14, 1949 game with Johns Hopkins, Hatchett was denied entry to the hotel the team was staying at and “redirected” to a different hotel. When the team returned home, the University stated no further games would be scheduled against any school that directly or indirectly promoted segregation policies. Rutgers beat Johns Hopkins 75-41 with Hatchett scoring 28.

Bucky Hatchett passed away in the fall of 2011 and is in both the Rutgers football and basketball Hall of Fame.

From the Sid Dorfman article:

"After a year of service in the Korean War, he returned to be a teacher at Verona High, which he loved and for which he was loved in return...He leaves his wife, Ona, and five children."

Growing up this is the kind of thing I always envisioned a true Loyal Son to be..multi-sport guy, liked by everybody and did well while at school, some sort of public service after graduation (be it military or other), nice successful career and a big family.

Thank you Mr. Hatchett and thank you @Source for the link.
