Rutgers defeated Springfield 44-13 on October 30, 1915 at Federal League Park in Harrison, N.J. Construction started on March 1 and by April 16 the Newark Peppers of the Federal League played their first game at a packed 20,000-seat home. The Federal League was a rival to the American and National Leagues in baseball but lasted only two years. The Indianapolis Hoosiers were moved to Newark for the 1915 season. But the club and the League folded by the end of that year. Rutgers played Northwestern there in 1919 when its name changed to Harrison Park. It burned down on August 18, 1923.

In that Rutgers Springfield game, the November 2, 1915 Daily Home News reported, “Bob Nash made one of the longest kick-offs on record in Saturday’s game. The kick in the second half went fully 100 yards and he came near losing the football. Had the ball gone a yard higher, it would have hurdled the center field fence, which stands a considerable distance between the goal posts and is possibly 20 feet high…. The ball went so high and so far that the Springfield players just stood around and watched it go over their heads

My father saw a Federal League game there as a 6 year old.He and my mother told me about that fire.I never knew that we played games there.A factory-Driver-Harris-was built on that spot.Today, the spot has luxury apartments.
