This article was posted yesterday in On the Banks by a Rutgers alum about our students and their behaviour. Penn Stater's are having a meltdown about it. I'm a Penn State parent and their blogs FB pages etc.. all sound like they think we're all low class scum. These are the parents! Just be aware that some of us may be treated with less than civility on Sept 19th. I'm wearing my "Penn State Dad" hat but I'm wearing scarlet from neck to toe. My sons will be all in Scarlet but my wife will be in blue. She's a PSU grad. We're also not sitting the Rutgers section we'll be in a section with a group Penn State parents. I'll let you know how it goes from my perspective.

Yes he is a cranky octogenarian screaming "get off of my grass"

Its the students and that's what they do. Sometimes the passion is misdirected but its a health rivalry.

Sounds to me like the students don't like Penn State.

I wonder how many (if any) are going to be out there in a week...

I wouldn't be surprised if some drunk Penn State fans have a block R for Rahway with Rutgers players behind bars. We should call them out on all the things they are thinking of doing to welcome Rutgers fans next week.

After what we did to them last year with inappropriate signs for which Julie Hermann had to apologize, I have a feeling that they will be looking for some payback.

I never had any problem at a venue as a fan of the visitors and that include some places like WVU has a reputation of being hostile.. All you have to do is be smart. 99% of problems as a visiting fan can be avoided. Don't be obnoxious. If your team is winning don't be throwing it in other faces. If you see a group of rowdy students tailgating don't march through it. Simply walk around. Finally have thick skin. No matter where you go your going to have jerks saying things. Just ignore it and walk away. Don't escalate it by confronting them. If it need addressed get security. At Penn State you can send a text to 6950 with the word NITTANY <space> your exact issue and location or call 1-800-Nittany

Rutgers students chanting f* their most hated rival? Oh please, cry me a river.
At a game where we arent even playing them when we havent beaten them in the LIFETIME of the people doing the chant. Yes - it should be stopped. Not because PSU fans thing its a bad thing - because its a bad thing.

Did the writer of the article have a problem with Ranger fans who used to chant "Potvin sucks" for over 20 years during every home game regardless of the opponent?

I agree and as we all know from being with opposing fans at our place and being opposing fans at other places, the vast majority of us have mutual respect and camaraderie for each other... On another note there are a lot of mixed RU and PSU families out there.... My Scarlet brothers, don't get mad at me for saying this but the only game I want Penn State to loose the rest of the year is against us.

Very sorry to hear about your affiliation with the cult in Happy Valley. [jumpingsmile]

PSUNut, Last season, as we were exiting our stadium after the RU-PSU game, spiraling our way down the ramps en masse, mixed with RU and PSU fans, the PSU folks started and then continued their "WE ARE... PENN STATE" chant, over and again. Kind of provocative, no? That's the sort of stuff that could trigger an event, no? And yet, we took it all in stride. Good sports.

My serious question to you: how do you think PSU "host" fans would treat visiting RU fans who---on exiting your stadium---continued along with our "RRRRRR.....UUUUUU" chant after we win this year's match up?

It barely registers with my definition of "bad things", so we'll have to agree to disagree. I agree that it would be nice to actually beat TTFP, but students chanting about them during random games won't change that; the play of the team on 9/19 would.

And the last people on this planet that I'm interested in hearing from about appropriate activities and family friendly atmospheres are TTFP fans.

Creep State...

The chant should go. It's stupid. We should ignore Creep State, and want nothing to do with them.

I think it's unsafe for us to travel there. There was some aggression with their fans in our building after they won. Just wait until the local crowd of goons gets all boozed up and want to take their weaknesses out on somebody, by some sick means of domination or humiliation.

As a famous man once said...

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy!

From my experience when we played Ped in the 90's, their fan base is full of extraordinarily rude people.

Further, any fan base that acts as a majority of their fans did during the Sandusky thing is worse than scum.

I'm sure that was quite annoying to hear after a tough loss, PSU fans celebrating......but obviously, we were simply excited about our victory.....but the difference is....after a great win....we yell out WE ARE...PENN STATE....instead of F RUTGERS...or F MICHIGAN....or F whoever.

I was at the Temple game last week....and I can't blame Temple fans for being amped up for beating PSU which hasn't happened in 74 effin years.....I get it!....it was their Super Bowl......gosh, there was part of me that was almost happy for them......but instead of yelling...WE ARE...TEMPLE or whatever their cheer/fight song is.....they were screaming....F PENN STATE over & over again....lol.

to me...and take how ever you want....but it screams "little brother" syndrome.

you think that happens at other major programs' stadiums?........I've been to a lot of them....it doesn't.

I was in Ann Arbor in 05 when we were undefeated when C Henne broke our hearts the last second of the game.......do you think they started chanting F PENN STATE?....uhh, nah......they cheered for their school....Hail to the Victors or whatever the sing.....of course their fans were excited, of course they were signing their fight song....it was a great win.....that's what you do.

Chanting that when playing other teams when you consider your record against Penn State is pathetic at best and extremely desperate at worst.

The F Penn State chant has got to go. It's one thing if you're playing them, but against other teams? Ummm yea it's no longer funny, it's creepy.

The f penn state cheer exists because of the way penn state fans are. We hate uconn and cuse, but this has never been a problem with them. Temple I assume hates us but doesn't have a F Rutgers chant.

It's a simple reaping of what you sow. Many PSU fans are crazy to everyone but themselves, and that manifests itself to chants like these.

But whatever, you guys keep chanting WE ARE PENN STATE during moments of silence for 9/11 victims and we can keep changing F Penn state until the end of time

Agreed. The students are retarded. It started out as a joke after we played you guys last year, but has just kinda stuck since the chant matches the song melody. They are trying to replace it with "let's go knights".

We do need to take care of business v. ttfp on September 19.

My most vivid memory of last year's RUTGERS game v. ttfp in Piscataway is their fans chanting Joe Ped's name during the BTN post game show.

Now that's pathetic.

That's an "RRRRR.... UUUUUU" call-and-response chant, with no profanities involved. So, again, how do you think your fans would handle that after a defeat on your home field?

Yeah, I thought that chant was extremely dumb and even commented on it on our HB. Here is James Franklin with a tough road win being interviewed and a bunch of idiots are chanting about Joe Paterno. Stupid.

Not trying to get in a pissing match here but ttfp is one of the dumbest coach creations I can remember. Leave it to Flood to steal something that Woody Hayes used 50+ years ago.

I think they would handle it just fine. I'm a grown man. What am I going to do, tell you to shut up after a big win or start an altercation with you? I've faced enough of those ridiculous situations at the few Browns games I've attended and have managed to keep my cool. I'm certainly not going to lose it at a college game where the atmosphere is 1000x more docile and respectful.

Penn State fans telling us to have a thick skin. That's rich. They're still crying that the world isn't buying their Paterno Lie anymore..

As to our fans chanting "F- whomever". I don't like it, It is crass but what I really don't like about it is it is so utterly uncreative. Put a little thought and effort into it.

"but ttfp is one of the dumbest coach creations I can remember"
That might be true, but there is a fix : FTTFP might be a better way of putting it :p
Just kidding, the f-word has no place in any chant or description when talking about the Nits or any opponent.

I don't have a problem with the chant, provided we are playing PSU. To say it at other games frankly makes no sense to me. Be creative and come up with something else.

I seen other schools do it with no problems. My seats are below the visitors section NCU so we always walk out with them. It never a issue. You also have to realize Penn State fans don't have the same hatred for Rutgers as Rutgers fans have for Penn State.

Hopefully we make it out of Happy Valley alive. [eyeroll]

Seriously? RU fans need to grow a set and TTFPers need to grow some thicker skin and look in the mirror.

As far as the chant is concerned, prior to the last few years where the rivalry has cooled and become almost boring, you could hear " F the Yankees cheers" and "F the Red Sox" cheers on a nightly basis at Fenway and in the Bronx in both the cheap seats and the expensive ones. I never heard anyone complain about that. In fact most people wax poetic about the good ole days when people did do it.

Kirk H did a bit on GD last week reminiscing about how amazing college football is and sighted the time at Wisconsin when he got pelted with rotten tomatoes and marshmallows with pennies inside to demonstrate how awesome CFB is.
