A cautionary note about the Penn State Game...

All i can say RU fans is bring your cell phones they mistreat you.....video it and tweet it out

Here's the thing. There are a lot of Penn St. alumni around where I live. Most of them don't go to many football games, and have never set foot in HPSS. Last year, prior to our game, I am convinced they thought this would be like a Temple game at LFF where they take over the stadium. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they would be coming into enemy territory to be treated like an opposing fan is usually treated at their stadium. So it was a new experience for them being the target of drunk students. After the game when they complained I basically said "get used to it, NJ isn't Penn St. territory anymore".

This is exactly my experience. From what I heard from PSU fans, they were going to take over the stadium. It was going to be "Beaver Stadium East", lol. When they realized that didn't happen at all, a lot of the PSU fans were sort of surprised. They looked intimidated to be honest and I don't think they expected to feel like that at all. A lot of them expected us to kiss the ring and be in awe of their all mighty presence. Basically, they expected it to be the Rutgers of 15 years ago.

That attitude itself created a lot of hostility with Rutgers fans and I think the Rutgers fans went a little overboard in opposition. In all reality, it was the first time we've played in a long time and we REALLY wanted to win that game. The next few times we play I expect it to be a little more tame, but PSU fans should never expect anything other than a hostile environment.

For those of you going to Happy Valley this year, be sure to have your cell phones out taking videos of as much "classy" PSU behavior as you can. Maybe that will silence their holier-than-thou attitude.

Remember Folks, PSU fans never do anything wrong, or slightly malicious.

That video is a perfect example what I talked about previously. First of all I don't condone what they did. The one person who chased them and threw the can was actually a Pitt student. The whole incident could have been avoided. If your a visiting fan you don't cut through a fraternities back yard in the middle of a party. It is just common sense and courtesy. If my neighbor having a party I don't take a short cut through the middle of it if I was not invited. Of course the Penn State fans reaction is completely classless.

This article was posted yesterday in On the Banks by a Rutgers alum about our students and their behaviour. Penn Stater's are having a meltdown about it. I'm a Penn State parent and their blogs FB pages etc.. all sound like they think we're all low class scum. These are the parents! Just be aware that some of us may be treated with less than civility on Sept 19th. I'm wearing my "Penn State Dad" hat but I'm wearing scarlet from neck to toe. My sons will be all in Scarlet but my wife will be in blue. She's a PSU grad. We're also not sitting the Rutgers section we'll be in a section with a group Penn State parents. I'll let you know how it goes from my perspective.

Penn State parents should worry about their own children's behaviour. Isn't throwing bottles filled with urine on opposing fans a Penn State tradition?

Just because some one claims it happened doesn't mean it did happen. It doesn't stop people from repeating it. OSU band claims it happened but when Penn State and Ohio State officials met to discuss it they could not find anyone who was actually was hit with urine. Of course everyone knew a person that was but for some reason know knew who it was. I have no doubt that they may have hand things said or thrown at them but like most stories things get exaggerated. I had to laugh when I heard the stories about Penn State buses at Rutgers. If you read the message board stories they damn near tipped over the bus and had bottles batteries and other objects thrown at them. In reality it was much much less.

Potvin still sucks. And so does Ovi. I laugh that they still chant that about Potvin nearly 40 years after his incident. That being said, I have no interest in making any derogatory chants or trash talking myself, it's the karma thing which will inevitably come back to haunt you. To me, as long as it is done in fun, not as an in-your-face taunt, it's OK. Some of the ingenious tOSU/Michigan stuff which goes on is a riot.

Did the writer of the article have a problem with Ranger fans who used to chant "Potvin sucks" for over 20 years during every home game regardless of the opponent?
Potvin Sucks and F*** PEnn State are in 2 totally different universes.

If the kids were cheering Penn State Sucks this would be a non issue.

Saying the F word in unison is bush league. Let Wisconsin keep that to themselves.

That is a fair argument if accurate

I'm just wondering if any of our fans (or any opposing fans) travelling to Penn St will be wearing those 'special' T shirts? Probably not, would be asking for trouble.

Wow, college students chant obscenities at games. Shocker.

1. I couldn't care less what Penn State parents and fans think of us.
2. I'm glad the student section hates Penn State. They should.
3. We fit right in with the Big Ten. Doesn't Wisconsin chant Eat Sh*t, F U during the game?

Some people worry way too much about way too many things. This isn't Navy. This is a school we feel is our chief rival in the Big Ten. So the students get a little salty with their cheers. If this bothers Penn State fans, and hopefully their players then it's great. The students show up, they make noise, they support their team. Christ if any of them realized how this board obsesses over things like the R U chant, how they make hand motions on third down and whether the students swear at games they'd die laughing. In fact, being college students, they'd probably do more of it just to piss us off.

Stop worrying about what other fans think about Rutgers and go enjoy the game.

PSU can be dangerous to go to... the OSU marching band doesn't go to Happy Valley anymore because they throw balloons with piss at them.

If they do .....in my opinion they deserve what ever they get. I wouldn't even help them

I urge ru fans to have your phone cameras ready to record the incidents of hostile treatment from psu fans on the 19th. Don't let them get away with it.

And definitely bring the R-U chants in the concourse areas!

From the attached article: "I get it. Rutgers fans want to hate Penn State. When Syracuse and Pitt bolted the Big East, Rutgers lost the closest thing it had to geographically close rivals. Penn State made having rivalry games close enough to drive to feasible again, and they're a more attractive option than Maryland since Penn State has history as a powerhouse of the Big Ten. That's a good rivalry to have."

Problem is, I really don't think that the author actually does get the nature of the hatred for Penn State. He simply sees PSU as a "geographic rival" that RU doesn't have any more in Cuse and Pitt. Actually, the issues go much deeper than what he mentions in the article. He fails to mention the arrogance of the PSU fans, the fraudulent "Success with Honor" mantra that so many football observers had naively bought into, the McQuery pass and subsequent confrontation between Graber and Paterno, the recruiting rivalry. Oh yeah, lest I forget, the culture that put football ahead of the lives of dozens of young boys in central PA who's lives were ruined by a monster. The author of this article simply does not understand.

There are assholes in every fanbase. PSU just has more of them. And they do have the cult subset, which we happily don't. Of course, they've also had far more success than we've had. Which is probably what leads to more assholes and cult drones. Cue Patrick's graphic.

This immediately came to my mind too. And yes, I think that's incredibly weak too. Reeks of inferiority complex. I agree with the entire article. Throughout college, I lived on the 50 yard line of the men's soccer games. I heckled incessantly. But I had one rule...no cursing. You know why? Because it's not clever. If you really want to get in someon's head, be original, be clever, be funny. Cursing is honestly for people who can't come up with a better way of saying it. Also, it's most effective when the team you're heckling is actually in the same stadium.

"Success With Honor" very much akin to "The Carolina Way." Make believe in Never Neverland. Slogans are easy. Institutional and athletic program integrity, not so much.

Prioritizing athletics is a slippery slope and takes careful management. Boosters cannot run the program, as is evident with UNC. Bad things happen. And it becomes the core of the culture. Would much rather like RU to emulate Stanford than the perennial powerhouses of the SEC.

The current mess at RU is a wakeup call, folks. Let's not hit the "snooze" button and roll over.

But, but, but...what will everyone think of us? lol. I'm completely with you on this one. I just don't get the obsession around here with minutiae I just don't care about.

Warning!!!

Creep State extended the tailgating hours for our game....now read this...

Affecting Penn State Fan Behavior
2011

"[F]an behavior at Penn State needs improvement. There are the obvious cases of negative fan behavior, like the “urine bombs” thrown at the 2005 Ohio State game as well as the riots after the Ohio State game in 2008. The infamous encounter between Penn State fans and Michigan fans involving racial slurs will also not soon be forgotten...

Though the challenges seem overwhelming... problematic fan behavior since those individuals who regularly exhibit poor behavior (especially when alcohol is involved)...

One major part of improving fan behavior at Penn State includes minimizing the number of occurrences that get out of control....

Often times, for the more than a hundred thousand fans in attendance, football weekends mean tailgating in the multiple hours leading up to the game. Tailgating for many Penn State fans is best described as an opportunity to celebrate the impending game with food, drinks, friends, and various outdoor games. For Penn State, it means policing thousands of parties, answering hundreds of emergency calls.... Bob White, the director of clubs and suites for Penn State Athletics, was able to speak to some of the inherent behavioral issues that stem specifically from tailgating. Mr. White stated that in his almost 25 years with Penn State Athletics, he has bared witness to a significant behavioral change amongst the fans in Beaver Stadium. Mr. White.... attributes the behavioral changes to the addition of night games in the Penn State football schedule... In Mr. White’s opinion, the largest contributing factor to the behavioral change was the increased potential for significantly longer tailgating times. He stated that alcohol seems to be the largest contributor to poor fan behavior...Mr. White said that there is a direct correlation between increases in game day incidents and weekends when night games occur....The longer the university allows fans to tailgate, the larger the odds become of a fan consuming significantly more alcohol...

Excessive alcohol consumption during tailgates is more than just a student perpetuated issue. Alumni are also strongly participating in excessive alcohol consumption. In some situations, conflict can easily arise when alumni, visitors, and non-student fans tailgate next to current students. In talking with Penn State students, they have cited multiple times in which alumni tailgating next to students have caused a wide variety of problems. The same is often said for visiting fans tailgating within a vicinity of Penn State fans. The co-mingling of student tailgates, non-student tailgates, and rival tailgates can make for substantial issues leading up to the game.

...some leading causes of poor fan behavior that stem directly from tailgating...increased alcohol consumption leads to a higher likelihood of behavioral issues during a game. Some options to curve the potential of these issues would be to limit the tailgating hours...Allowing visiting fans to tailgate in specific zones would also reduce the potential for rivalry conflict that often occurs between Penn State fans and visitors prior to the actual game."

Rutgers students are just following the great Ivy League traditions.

Yes, it is stupid and crass but ... at least it is more polite than what you will hear at Wisconsin games from their students.

Whenever I hear the fans chant "F@!#" PSU or whoever it may be, I cringe. I hate it particularly against PSU. How about we ditch the chant and beat them for once. I take that back, it was worse against Navy. RU fans are better than that. I agree, stop the chant.

I noted in another recent thread that I was at the Notre Dame game a week ago, and the crude chant started amongst a few in the student section near where I was seated. The other students shouted them down and told them to knock it off so it ended quickly and didn't get too loud. Kudos to those students.

I've traveled to several B1G stadiums wearing my colors and have seldom had a problem. With a few exceptions, those who look for trouble usually find it and those who don't, don't.

Go watch a youtube video of Bama fans singing Dixie Land Delight after every game.... And these games arent always vs Auburn that they sing this song... Its a rivalry and has grown to be part of the chant and its not going anywhere

Unless you go to Unconn and deal with their subhuman fans I tend to agree. And I have traveled to 2 dozen away games over the last ten years.

Your fears about safety at Penn State are overblown - I'd even say baseless. Let me share a story of my experience at a PSU game.

My dad was a big Notre Dame fan and we went to South Bend for a lot of games together. After my dad passed away, I wore his ND Jersey and hat to the ND vs PSU game to honor his memory.

I walked the tailgate lots and the RV lots trying to find a cousin to lift a shot to my dad. The most hostility I encountered from adult fans were understated, almost whispered "booooo"''. It was actually funny because I had to look around to try and determine the guilty parties. This was consistent in every lot I visited.

I did run into a group of students that were drunk. They were rude, and what I consider to be out of line and I got some Fxxx Notre Dame from their tailgate. I approached them and introduced myself and asked the young man who was most boisterous if he could identify the pin on the collar of dad's ND jersey. It was my alumni association pin. I explained to the young man that I was an alumni and that my donations were partly responsible for the university experience he was enjoying. I told him that he was a representative of MY UNIVERSITY and that if it were my dad wearing this jersey that it would be very disrespectful and that he should be ashamed of his behavior. His drunken girlfriend (who could barely stand) looked at him and said "I bet you feel like an axxhole now don't you". I was by myself and did not have any small children with me. I would hope that these students would have been classier to curse at me if I had young ones with me. Sorry to say, Rutgers students were cursing at my wife, sister-in-law and their pre-teen children. Bad behavior is bad behavior and I don't buy the "kids will be kids" rationale.

In 2005 I did not have season tickets so I had to wander around campus to buy tickets from a non scalper. I walked down fraternity row and I did see drunken frat brothers verbally abusing OSU fans. I don't know how the OSU folks got to frat row, but for a late-kickoff game I would avoid fraternities. Chant away, but ignore them and definitely don't engage them and you will be ok.

Notre Dame is considered a relevant opponent and there is a high degree of animosity. Some from Notre Dame's success, some from a perceived sense of entitlement and special treatment for ND, and I believe some by good old fashioned anti-Catholic bigotry. I did not have a hard time with a ND jersey and most of the razzing was good natured.

You will have a good time. None of the paid lots will take you past the frats. Come early, stroll the campus, check out the bars downtown, be sure to visit the Lt. Murphy memorial (Lone Survivor). Chant, cheer, but don't be an asshat. You will have a good experience. And IF you get a student cursing at you, calmly quote a line from our Alma Mater. Look at them and say "REALLY, MAY NO ACT OF OURS BRING SHAME"??? I've done this when I observe students treating our visitors poorly. It usually calms them down.

Good luck. See you next week. May the best team win. (that reminds me...bring lots of booze to make the bus ride home less miserable!)
