@KSargeantNJ: Ash said he thinks Saquan Hampton has potential to be an absolute star. DBs coach Bill Busch also raved about #rutgers starting free safety

@KSargeantNJ: Ash cited wide receiver Dacoven Bailey as a freshman who should play right away #rutgers

We won't know if the evaluations by Ash and Staff are correct until well into the season. Do like the fact that new names are emerging after last year's performance.

Which tells you a lot about our returning WR's (which some of us have been saying for a a while now...).

Don't think much of them?
I think Patton has potential and Grant can be a star.
Tsimis could be a be a good situational player .
The rest of WR probably fit in the questionable category and I have my doubts about
their ability to win a starting job or stand out as backups .
So in a way I can see how you and others feel a lack of confidence about some of the returning WR's ability to make the receiving corps a strength on their own.

I think it's more of Bailey being a good fit for this offense. He's kind of like a RB/WR hybrid in how's he built and the way he runs. I think Patton and Grant in this offense (I never liked Grant as a WR in the pro-set) will be very productive and as long as Harris stays healthy I think that kid can be another Tim Brown. Harris is an exceptional athlete with big play capability.

Bailey looked pretty good at the Scrimmage last weekend. It was hard to catch or notice Hampton as I was hyperventilating at times from the heat.

Wow, and to think DaCoven didn't get many offers.....anyone who goes from two stars to playing right away has to be particularly underrated.

Going back in the ol memory bank, I believe he played at a very small school. They didn't have a QB who could get the ball to him. Bailey probably had more rushing attempts on WR sweeps or from the RB position than catches. He even played some wildcat QB. I think he may have been a track guy too.

Hopefully RU stole a real football player who just needed to be given a position.

I think everyone knows it was and is an area of concern. Matt Millen made the comment that none of them were capable of getting separation during the Wisconsin game last year.

Honestly I don't expect some magical turnaround. I do expect Grant to have a pretty good year but at this point I'd just be happy if they just catch the ball when the situation presents itself.

WR will continue to be a problem. Remember last year when Carroo was out? They were almost non-existent.

That's because Carroo was able to make acrobatic catches from all the wounded ducks that Laviano was throwing.
The other WRs were not able to that. Hopefully the new Offense makes up for the deficiency we have in the QB accruacy.

My expectation is that a portion of the new offense is specifically designed to get the ball to receivers in space. I'm just hoping we find a guy who can actually get it there.

Yup. I expect OC Merringer and the WRs to produce given the flexibility our new offense presents. We need a QB that can execute the offense and get the ball to the right receiver accurately and on time.

Stud athlete. He played 4 sports by playing Baseball and getting his track work in early mornings. Article up on him today.

Aside from Grant I'm skeptical of our returning WR's, yes, and hearing that a true frosh is fighting for playing time leads me to believe I/we have reason to think as such. Fingers crossed, however, for the best as this kid was recruited by the new staff!

Grant has straight line speed. He is not good at coming out of breaks and really struggles trying to get separation. We do not have a WR who has proven to be able to get separation and get open.

We'll also find out if Agudosi's lack of production had anything to do with coaching and schemes, QB issues, or otherwise, since he's got the physical attributes to be good.

A 2 star recruit under Flood is different than under Ash. Bailey is from Texas and recruited by Houston so I assume they saw something in Bailey.

Dave I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that.

Cole, Heeman, and Wharton were 2 stars. All are expected to start. Wiafe and Bateky, also 2 stars, are expected to play big roles on the DL. There are others.

It's not who recruited them, it's what the kid does when he gets on campus.

Yeah but starting and/or getting PT doesn't mean a damn thing if your unit and/or team is weak. Bottom line is a few years of sub-par recruiting will do this to a team and someone has to play.

I get that you're really down on RU's chances but every unit isn't weak and every starter isn't there because other players aren't any good.

I've really enjoyed your posts over the years but jeeze man, sometimes there is a middle of the road.

Sorry but it's part of the conversation, like it or not, so if you're gonna bring up 2-stars that (edit) would be 3rd team at most B1G schools, well, I'm going to reply as such. Bottom line: when you have back-to-back-to-back classes, loaded with 2-stars, some of them are going to start and many will end up 1st or 2nd string.

Not being negative, just realistic, and the sad truth is regardless of coaching, right now, Flood left a mess behind for Ash.

I'm a realist which means I don't disagree with your point. But there's no prize for being right about it. It's okay to let people enjoy their preseason excitement even if we think it has a high potential for being unrealistic, yes?

Not to mention, stars only mean so much. We may be pleasantly surprised to find out we have more talented kids than we thought and that they just needed better coaching.

Certainly the team is without star-power and players who would start on most of our opponent's lineups, but there are observers who feel that Coach Ash's roster is not awful, though those are the comments primarily of Gerry DiNardo, who I believe is a friend of Coach Flood.

I believe DiNardo and Flood attended the same HS in NYC but years apart. And Griffin and Revson (sp) who echoed that statement.

I believe this is a close estimate of past Rivals **** rankings from 2012-2013-2014... I did not include the last class of 2016 since only D.Bailey ( 2 **) is probably going to play early...total of 18-19 players in this class ... this group is considered by some on this board as not being B1G players...we will see down the road... on offense a total of 33 players ...(19) - 3*** ... (3) - 4****...(9) 2 -** ( 2 ) W/O... on defense 32 players (13) 3-*** (4) 4-****( 14 ) 2-** and (1) W/O...the only consolation is most of these players on the O & D have seen action in games for the most part...This totals 65 who may or may not contribute...by star rankings it is a mixed bag...

For the next 3 years, we will continue to hear about "Flood bad," every time some aspect of a game go well or a part of the team does not play well. But he will never get credit for recruiting some of the solid players on the team like Hicks, Martin, Sneed, etc, etc, etc.

My bad meant "would" and will make the change. Also it was a comment about 1 or 2 kids mentioned in that group, not all, obviously.
