The NCAA may have delivered an ominous warning last week to athletes and coaches in men’s sports outside of revenue-generating football and basketball teams.

Central Michigan athletic director Michael Alford announced on June 4 the NCAA has approved the school’s request to maintain FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) eligibility even though it is below the minimum Title IX requirements of sponsored men’s sports because of budget cuts. The waiver is for the next two years,

Schools usually must have at least six men’s sports in order to maintain FBS eligibility.

“If Central Michigan got this waiver, are other schools going to get this waiver?’’ asked Rutgers University head wrestling coach Scott Goodale last Friday during an online show he hosted. “That’s kind of my fear.’’

If the economy in two years is still like it is now, the minimum number of sports teams will not be high on the list of priorities. It is only a two year waiver. Can’t imagine we don’t see substantial improvement in unemployment and other aspects of the economy by then.
