Actual football : Rossi better bring pressure

Hit hack and keep hitting him . None of this sit back and not give up the big play . If we can't get there with 3 or 4 keep blitzing until we keep hitting hack.
I'll be looking to see if Nelson gets the start at LT for them. He looked pretty banged up in Buffalo game. If not I assume they'll put that JUCO who Temple lit up. If that's the case I want to see stunting and blitzes to his side - confuse him and try to get his confidence shot early in front of his home crowd. We obviously have to hit Hack early and often.

We need to make Barkley a non factor and make them one dimensional. He looked electric against Buffalo for what it's worth.

On offense I worry about their d tackles. We had Kaleb a 5th year senior last year and he couldn't handle Zettel. I still remember the spin move on our last drive - just nasty. I expect to see the toss sweep with Hicks to be a staple of our o. We succeed there and the safeties might cheat in support. I'm expecting a big performance out of Arch or Flanagan up the middle if that happens. And you know there will be a big play down the field early to either Aguodosi or Patton - they have to catch the damn thing. If I'm PSU with Carroo out my focus is on Grant. The other wideouts must step up.

If I was PSU OC the only pass plays I would call would be of the 3 step variety. No need to put my QB in danger. RU has not shown the ability to defend the quick hitters or the under neath routes. This also negates the pass rush off the end. Rossi has not been able to dial up proper stunts nor have they taught the d line how to get off blocks and be disruptive.

I hate a three man rush. Even against an air raid offense.

Rossi needs to blitz on some non-obvious passing downs as well, even if it's a run blitz. Don't be predictable!

At full strength I really thought we could beat them this year. At this point in time the D-Line doesn't have the juice to get penatration which will make this game that much tougher. Has an interim coach been named?

In all fairness, we didn't need to show much against Norfolk and playing against wsu is a totally different deal altogether (all those guys do is pass, so their pass protections are going to be excellent). This is the week where we get a better sense of what coach Rossi has cooking.
But we have to be very careful when blitzing... We can't have true frosh corners playing man on blitzes and getting torched. Make pen earn their yards and get tough near the red zone where the defensive backfield shrinks and becomes an advantage for our young DBs.

We need to bring one and force them to keep people in to help

Must dictate for a change and not react

If Hackenberg is lighting the secondary up and Rossi sticks to a vanilla defense that will be very telling about his coaching abilities.

I'd assume that your coaches defensive game plan is three fold.... Blitz, Blitz, then Blitz again. Our offensive line hasn't shown any indication that they are able to stop it yet.

I don't have any inside information, but I'm guessing that Nelson will be out for a couple weeks. Also, Lynch, even though he is listed as starter, probably won't get the majority of the carries. Last week Barkley had 12 carries to Lynch's 11. Lynch is a solid back but from everything we've been hearing, Barkley looks like he could be special. I'm assuming that they are trying to bring him along slowly rather than throwing him to the wolves.

Everybody has written us off. Why not play a little fast and loose occasionally. Play like we have nothing to lose since most people on here seem to think the season is over.

Unfirtunately, our d-coordinator has no creativity and doesn't believe in taking risks. His mantra is let the other team screw up and keep everything in front. This never works unless we are playing a vastly inferior team. Even then, passing on us is quite easy.

Just because many have written us off doesn't mean the team and coaching staff have. I hear what you're saying, but we have mentally tough kids from a mentally tough part of the country... No white flag waving

What would it tell about his coaching? What do you mean by vanilla defense? Im just trying to talk some football, thanks

Pass protection excellent from WSU? really? Look at the stats from the previous week. That was a Div1 aa team. May I remind you a not very good 1aa team. Our d line looked like they were blocking their counterparts. They had no idea how to shed a block or to create leverage or space. D line created many of the mismatches in coverage by not getting pressure or at the very least disturbing the passing lanes.

IMO, we need to slow the game down and keep it close. Cover 2 is fine with me on the road against a talented QB.

PSU is going to get their points -- at least make them eat up clock.

The main improvement I want to see from this defense is how they defend the bubble screen. How many times have we seen the QB simply throw it over to a WR for cheap yards on early downs? Let the kids squat on that route. If the QB wants to run a fake bubble fade, let them try. It's not a high percentage throw and the CB should have safety help up top. If they complete the throw, just tip your hat and move on.

Vanilla defense is a four man rush and going cover two 90 percent of the time. Against Washington State the QB was aware almost every play what defense he was looking at and what reads he had to make before the snap. In my view, it's better to mix the defenses up more to make the QB think before and after after the snap. If you saw a lot of those completions, the reads were pretty basic and the QB had time to make the reads. It's nice to say that you don't want your QB's to be exposed, but it's also fairly easy for a QB to rip apart a cover 2, as seen last week, if he has time and knows it will be a cover two before the snap is even made.
