Rutgers football will not be returning KO’s until Schiano is no longer the Head coach !!!

Back to back weeks a fumbled kickoff has turned into gigantic 7 points for the Eagles

Packers down 7-0 4 plays in
Washington giving up a crushing TD late in the first half

It was the Packers initially but your point is taken.

I think it’s more than the risk of turnover for Greg. LeGrand’s injury still haunts him. It’s understandable TBH and in the grand scheme of things not really that big a deal. Statistics show that more often than not teams that return them don’t even get back to the 25.

Punt returns a different story. There are situations where we need to return those. Full stop.

We were not returning a kick when Eric was injured. We were covering a kick.. we still do that.

Still.. you might be right. I doubt it. I think it is more simple.. "The Ball is the Program". Not taking risks... not fumbling, not throwing INTs.. THAT is The Program.

I don’t recall the specifics but it was on a kick off. And the new rules about starting on the 25 by taking a knee following that tragedy didn’t it? I’m just saying - I kind of get it that we choose to play kick offs extremely safe and it doesn’t bother me. Look - for the handful of big plays we might miss out on a season, we also get to start at the 25 and sometimes we wouldn’t get that far if we tried to run. And we do risk getting guys banged up. So I’m ok with the strategy.

The punts are infuriating. We call for fair catch in some situations where there are 20 yards between the receiver and the nearest defender. That has nothing to do with LeGrand and everything to do with our inability to field punts cleanly early last season. Greg needs to get over it and find someone he trusts to run those. We give up near free yardage at times.

Shelby isn’t convinced Schiano would allow a punt return on the very last play of a game with the team losing.

Prediction…buoyed by the ingenious Illinois FG TO, Schiano will ice the opposing punter at least four times next year.

Agree on the punts. If you recall, Greg's thoughtful solution to kickoff danger was to start with the ball on the 40 in a 4th and 10.. or maybe 4th and 15 situation so that the kickoff becomes a punt.. and teh onsides would just be a fake punt.. or just line up and run a play.

To me, that is a superior option to what the NFL now has.

But to the possibility of always fair-catching because of the danger of injuries... on punts.. doesn't make sense given GS's kickoff solution.

The trade off is WAY different on punts. It’s apples and oranges. For a kickoff - there’s zero risk in just letting the ball go into the end zone for a touch back to the 25. In fact if anything the opposite, if the ball takes a weird bounce and goes out of bounds at the 1, it’s a flag and you get the ball at the 40.

A punt is completely different. If you have someone who can be relied on to field the ball and the D is 10-15 yards back, calling for a fair catch at the 3 yard line really hurts your field position. Letting the ball roll is also a crap shoot because in the case of a punt - the D can down it at the 1 depending on how it rolls. Arguably there are many punt situations where the biggest risk (provided you have a competent fielder who can catch the ball) is not running it to get out of the end zone.
