Alabama vs USC will have 28 5-star recruits (new record)

I'm a star lover but i'm not hyping it as game of the century but looking forward to the first weekend of cfb, should be a good game as usc is one of the few who can bang with bama in the trenches & match them with speed but not sold on that new coach besides recruiting.....

A lot of it was the depth. They were sanctioned severely for what was essentially a non affiliated person giving extra benefits to Reggie Bush so he could be his agent when he left SC.

SC was punished much more than Penn St., which shows you how misguided the NCAA is. They will always get 5* recruits at SC, but the last 5 or so years they had no depth at all. Great starting talent, but that is it.

It's changing now though.

SC is one of the most consistently overrated football teams. Period.

+1 One of the things you can count on in almost any football season is that USC will be rated top 5/10 at some point, then drift on down to the low 20s or beyond, where they're still only ranked that high because they're USC.

In a recent interview Narduzzi talked about recruiting and stars.

He said the most important thing is player development.

In some cases high star rankings can be for a player that peaked at 18.

While at MSU Narduzzi recruited Le'Veon Bell who had one other offer from Bowling Green or while at Cincinnati they had a recruiting class ranked 82 but had 7 players drafted into the NFL from that class.

I realize that stars translate into potential and the more stars the greater the potential for success.

However, a head coach who can recognize talent/potential and develop that player is paramount for any successful football program (Boise State). Retaining that coach long term insures success.

If Ash is a good game day coach and can develop players recruiting will improve.

USC gets talent but their coaching has been worthless. All the talent in the world doesn't mean anything if you don't have people in place to develop and guide it.

USC tends to do better when they have an NFL quality QB. I suppose that would be true of most teams.

Player Development.

Probably the best example I can give is Iowa.

Iowa has become a program built on player development of overlooked players. In doing so it has become one of the NFL's feeder programs.

For example, a two star prospect has a 1in 34 chance of getting drafted into the NFL. At Iowa a two star prospect has a 1 in 6 chance of getting drafted into the NFL. A 3-star prospect at Iowa is three times more likely to get drafted than most other programs.

Iowa might not win a national championship team but they can play competitive football.

This year Iowa only had a Rivals recruiting ranking of #42 (2.88 star avg) with no rival 5 or 4 star recruits after coming off a terrific season this year.

Well if that is true lest see what happen to UNC 18 years of cheating?

UNC will get a pass, which is crazy. They are the very definition of lack of institutional control. They should get what SMU got, only worse.

USC was given fast and swift punishment. Their AD really pissed off the NCAA and they dropped the hammer on them because of it. A non affiliated business owner was trying to sign Bush after he declared and to entice him, let his parents stay rent free in a house in San Diego. Short of going down and asking their parents for receipts and documentation, I am not sure how that could be stopped. They could have been more diligent in keeping people away from Reggie Bush, which was something I noticed, but still. This is LA. There are agent types everywhere you turn.

Still, SC got punished more than Penn St. for covering up boy rape. Astounding when you think about it.
