Arnold Palmer passes away at 87

The role model for anyone with an awful golf swing. THE statesman for the sport of golf. Icon of American sports and culture.

Was the first golfer I followed. From Latrobe, PA (home of rolling rock). I'm going to pour some ice tea in my lemonade tomorrow and recall Arnie fondly. RIP

This is sad. He was a golfing legend. Although I was never a golf fanatic I knew he was the best golfer in the world during my youth. Everyone seemed to really like him. I always respected him. I will pray for him and his family.

My heart sunk when I heard. I had three sports heros growing up. Mickey Mantle, Johnny Unitas, and Arnie. They're all gone now. He's the reason I became interested in golf.

I got to be part of his army at the 1980 US Open at Baltusrol. He was the last qualifier and had the 1st starting time on Saturday. He came out of the tent around 7am to find thousands of us waiting for him to go to the practice range. He gave us the big Arnie grin and as he made his way thru the crowd seemed to make eye contact with every fan as a way to say thanks for the support. On the range we cheered every practice shot then followed him en mass to the green, then 1st tee. He played terrible that day but it didn't matter, we were with The King.

He made sports what it is today with a handshake agreement with Mark McCormack, the founder of IMG.

Palmer is the reason why sports is so huge today.

He was one of the coolest dude in sports.

Granted he was not young, but it seems like he had a lot of life left in him.

He will be missed.

He along with Jack Nicklaus took the PGA to task and created the modern tour. Arnie also started the Golf Channel.

It was sad to see him at the Masters honorary opening tee shots, with Jack and Gary and he wasn't able to tee it up - was wondering, then, if he was seriously ill. As a kid, I always loved watching him, even though he was a little past his prime and as a former golfing fanatic, I love watching footage of his golfing accomplishments. Great golfer and even better ambassador for the game. RIP.

Do any of you remember Arnie's famous charges in the last few holes of a tournament? He could never be counted out. And he had that army because he was so charismatic. RIP.

A tremendous competitor and gentlemen on the golf course and a class act off the course. He will be missed. RIP

His talent on the course was exceeded by his personality and generosity off of it. Far too many people in the public eye could stand to follow his example.

I don't know much about Golf but I had this game as a kid:

a class act and a gentleman during a period of time in our nation's history when person's of this caliber are in short supply.
