Article on RU QBs

Or it is just a made up scenario. Greg has never been one to give backup QB’s significant reps. Gavin was our best QB.
Jeez you Gavin lovers. He wasn't the best QB that year, but the only one with a NIL deal.
Chas Dodd and Gary Nova literally split a season. Both were way better than GW

Exactly. We've all seen GS's QB usage and approach. He's not benching AK unless something really terrible happens to him nor do we run an offense that leads to big leads where he can play #2 for a quarter or even extended series.
How many FCS teams do we play? 3 to start? Should be plenty of points on the board for Surace to see the field. And a blowout or two on the wrong side.

I agree with all of that except your choice of disparaging Surace and Sheppard in your post earlier as needed they needed "to step up" They can't step up if they don't see they field. Why do you blame it on them??
I dont understand when people say they can not step up if they are not on the field. Can they not step up in practice? That is where playing on game day is earned.

Obviously you don't understand the difference between practice and an actual game.

As for Gavin- two things in his year he started. Greg was hanging his hat on him as he even skipped a recruiting year on a promise to Gavin and that should never happen. So- in 2023- no other QB was going to get the chance to start.
That said- even as bad as GW ended up being- he was still the best option for us at QB...

As for AK - There seems to be a plan in place and I am ok with it as AK can win us some games and will not usually lose us games. Perfect kid to be a bridge to who we hope may be a very good QB.

I absolutely do. But you sound like the parents who complain about their kids never getting a chance if they do not get in the game. You earn your chance sin games in practice.

In 20 years of coaching I never said eh this kid has not done it in practice, let me see if he can do it in a game.

It is funny as I almost felt WB meant it the other way and you two were saying the same thing...As I know that WB played at this level, he would know that you need to prove yourself in practice. Now, we have see the opposite happen many times- a great practice player who just can't do it in a game. But I am not sure anyone has just sucked it up in practice and got a shot in a real game.

I'm complaining as Rutgers fan that we are totally unprepared if AK has an injury.
So with your 20 years of coaching are you saying Surace and Sheppard suck?

I am not at practice to determine their capability to get into a game. Not my job as a fan to determine this.

I will make the assumption that the best QB is the starting QB. By all accounts Surace is showing his elite potential in practice, and is recovered from his injury. People assume he will jump Sheppard at some point, but we will have to see.

In other words as I see it
Both Sheppard and Surace need to show in practice they have the ability to step up and take over as the starting QB if a situation arises that AK need replacing .
But giving one or both some game experience , whenever possible, would help get one or both of them ready to take over the QB spot in case of an emergency .

Neither Chas or Gary were on the team with Gavin, so it is immaterial that they were better than Gavin. Both were inconsistent in 2011, so neither established themselves as QB1, but all of that was besides the point.

If I was responsible for funding Athan’s NIL, I would much prefer that he sat in the second half of the Akron game that was well in hand than stay in there and get hurt.

Anyone who thinks that Schiano would play someone just because a donor wants that player to play is delusional

AK has had the treat of the conference's best RB next to home and a coach that likes running the ball.

We shall see what he can do when defenses play a more balanced D... unless Raymond can quickly make a name for himself...

I think the opposite is going to happen. I think our WRs are going to be legit dangerous and it is going to open up the run game this year. Strong requires over the top and underneath coverage, and if Duff can continue his growth into sophomore year we have two legit outside threats. Then if DT can live up to his hype, that is a formidable 3. This will force teams to be in two high looks against us, which is the dream for running the ball.

Now if we can get a TE who can threaten the middle of the field.....our offense can be legit.

They didn't have to be on the same team. They could actually throw to a running back in flat.

Agree you should take out your investment during a game that got out of hand. Keeping a guy in a during a blowout either way is asking for trouble. Especially against a team that is a level or 3 below. I don't remember anyone praising a Bama player when they play The Citadel.

I agree with this- in previous years- the WR group has hurt both RB and QB. We were lucky to have an NFL quality RB.

Strong and Duff may be the best double combo since Britt/Underwood. We have had other great WR's- Sanu, Carroo, Melton, etc...but these 2 guys may be NFL bound and I think that will make AK super dangerous and our running game even better- and why I say it makes AK super dangerous- it is because he is not afraid to air the crap out of the ball and doesn't care about completion % as much as our fans do.

Throw in that we likely see more 4 WR sets like in the back half of the year if Ben Black continues to improve and you have a lot of height and/or speed out there. As long as KC mixes up the play calls and doesn't run every 1st down, then it will open up the run game.

If we don’t see one of our better offenses, KC needs to be on the hot seat

Now that you have playoffs the story of Dylan Molloy of Brown in the 2016 NCAA Lax Tournament should be required reading for coaches. 1st team AA and the lax equivalent of the Heisman. Still playing in mid 4th qtr in an easy 17-8 win over Hopkins he breaks his foot. Doesn't play in a 2nd 11-10 squeaker over Navy. Plays in the semis with the injury (and his 40 could have timed with a sundial) in an OT loss to Maryland. They really had a chance to win the whole thing. Maryland lost in OT to UNC

Why would we NOT run the ball on first down? That doesn't make any sense!

Well we have our own story from 2006: Shawn Tucker getting lost for the season in the 4th quarter of our game against Howard. What the hell was he still doing in the game?

I just hated your choice of "they need to step up"
Schiano needs to let them play. But it seems like NIL money is making the decisions.

I think the poster meant step up and challenge AK based on performance in practice.

Obviously you don't understand the difference between practice and an actual game.

Looking at the context of the original comment, I think you just misinterpreted what that poster was trying to say. A back up can “step up” in the sense of demonstrating major progress in training camp to challenge the starter. I imagine that’s what was meant. Last year, Gavin was around during camp so there wasn’t much opportunity for the younger guys to make their case since they weren’t even getting many practice reps with the 1 or 2 deep. Now they will have more opportunity.
