Ash > Franklin

Franklin is a great recruiter and nothing more. People are finally starting to realize he is not a very good coach and Vandy was all smoke and mirrors. Last year it was sanctions, this year it's the OC's fault, next year it will be breaking in a new QB and probably a new DC......

I know it's not the proper homer attitude, but I think I'll wait until we see Ash coach at least one game before I crown him victor in any head-to-head coaching competition.

----
Certainly.....no way to compare game day coaching..... In fact you have to see Ash over a full season, big 10 games for sure.

Let's wait for the results from this recruiting season to start with. He'll be off to a good start if he can land Fuller and Sails. If he gets Gary he jumps to superstar status right away :D

I don't know where the feeling that Franklin can't coach comes from. Media in general are very positive about him. Why can't he coach?

Franklin's best win this year is Indiana or San Diego State. He hasn't beaten one ranked team at Vandy or TTFP.

He is the expensive douche version of Flood with good (for now) recruiting. Another year like this and Ash, Narduzzi and Durkin are going to put him on the unemployment line.

Now why would we go and do that ....

It is an interesting comparison. On paper at least, Ash and Franklin hail from the two opposite ends of the spectrum. Ash would seem that he's more of the football X's and O's guru, while franklin is a CEO type coach who directs the program but leaves much of the coaching to his coaches. It's two approaches, and both have succeeded.

In recent history, we've had Bill O'brien who was about as far from Franklin as you could be. Hated everything besides actually coaching football. The problem is that being a college football coach has as much to do with greasing hands of donors as it does improving your TE blocking. O'brien did one half very well, but hated the other half.

as many point out, Franklin isn't known for his football acumen. But he makes up for it in his ability to recruit. and recruiting is a broad term here. Yes, he recruits good players; but he also recruits good coaches and donors and fans to buy tickets.

If Franklin can surround himself with great coaches (which i think he can) he can keep doing everything else well and the program will succeed. I think Ash is a good hire (even though i don't know a ton about him honestly) but declaring him better than franklin seems a little early. So yes, if i was hiring a coordinator, i'd probably choose ash for defense over franklin for offense, but that's not what were' talking about here.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Too early, let see how Ash can recruit and who he hires as coordinators to start with. Let's see if he keeps the class together or upgrades certain positions. It would be nice if he can get Gary on a visit or even go visit Gary & his Mom this week. He's got a lot on his plate right now and the first thing is probably interviewing like crazy assistant coaches, hopefully he has time to call on Fuller, Gary, Sails this week before the quiet period starts.

Living where I do, I know a fair number of PSU alums and based on their reactions so far, the bloom is definitely off the rose in unhappy valley.

Franklin is a tool compared to this guy

I think you mean Franklin is a tool in general.

Actually met him in person a few months ago out to dinner in Philly (he was out with Jordan Matthews + some other football people in the area for a birthday of some sort). He was very personable, but my god he left a bad taste in my mouth. No sincerity in his voice and he just seems like such a douche. Made a comment about going to Maryland when he was coaching there and he made some wise ass remark like "oh I don't even remember when I was there" (hint: it was literally 4 years earlier).

Franklin is heads shoulder feet and toes better than Ash. Dude is killing it on the recruiting trail and winning on the field.

I think exactly the same and I'm not the only one. Many HS coaches feel the same way. He had the perfect storm of good breaks this year...similar to Floods first B1G year with better talent. Two blocked kicks against OSU, people simply forgetting about Michigan ass whooping, weak OOC schedule, and some big/lucky QB play. Let's talk again next year. And let's not forget he makes 5 million a year. For that money you should be finishing top two or three in your division every year.

Talk about sour grapes.
  1. STs are part of the game. After the Rose Bowl, not too many people saying OSU was a fluke.
  2. No one forgot about Michigan. BTW, PSU didn't lose another game since that one until they faced USC. Meanwhile, Harbaugh The Great lost three of his final four.
  3. PITT wasn't all that weak were they? Would you prefer PSU play Colorado?
  4. Lucky QB play? That is the biggest BS comment you made. McSorley was an absolute stud this year. Pretty sure you probably said Franklin and his staff ruined Hack. Shouldn't they also get credit for what they did with a 3* that many thought should play S in college?
  5. He finished NUMBER 1 in his conference so not sure your point.
Please take it one step further and talk about how he got lucky by hiring an OC he had on his radar. That's your last move.

Your response to being called out is comical.

I'm not taking anything away from what they accomplished this year. It was a banner year and great performance. That being said, would you argue that a good portion of McSorley's big plays could have just as easily been picks like the Rose Bowl? I love a gun slinger and he makes plays but he also has a tendency to just chuck it up. Like I said, with a harder schedule and less talent Flood won 8 games year one. Again, for 5 million A year you should be playing in Rose Bowls. Let's see how he follows it up in the next few years. Are you denying a good portion of PSU fans were fed up with Franklin and ready to move on? Especially after Pitt?
