Starting to look at the B1G stands and how seeding will shape up. Ohio State blowing out Iowa dropping the Hawkeyes to 5-8. Nebraska loses big to Minnesota. We are ahead of Iowa and only a game behind Nebraska and Purdue. Penn State upsets Michigan State. Lots of possibilities. We could finish as high as 6th in the conference. Given our rough start on the road, that would be a nice comeback.
Finishing 6th would give us the 11-6 game on the second day of the tournament. A win there gets a game against #3 seed which is huge. Avoiding Ohio St or Maryland, who look to be 1and 2 in the 3rd round would be great giving us a legit chance to get to the semi final round.

need that Michigan State game next week..key game to everything
Also the Purdue game. We need to beat them to win any tie breaker should we finish with the same record. I'm surprised that we wind up playing them away again this year.

Tightening up after today's games. One bad result for us. Nebraska beats Micigan State. The win puts them at 8-6 one game ahead of us, Purdue and Michigan. We are in a 3-way tie for 7th with Purdue and Michigan at 7-7.
Nebraska still has Ohio St and Purdue to play so we could still wind up in a tie or better with them. But as bac states above, the Michigan St game is a virtual must win to climb into 6th place.

Yes we do and it's winnable. That game is crucial and we need to win all of the other games minus Maryland. If we do, I think that places us firmly on the bubble, but closer to coming off the bubble and getting in especially if we win a few in the B1G tournament.

Full standings right now:

1. Ohio State 13-1/21-4
2. Maryland 10-2/23-3
3. Minnesota 10-4/18-7
4. Michigan State 8-4/18-7
5. Indiana 9-5/17-9
6. Nebraska 8-6/17-8
7t. Michigan 7-7/15-10
7t. Purdue 7-7/16-9
7t. Rutgers 7-7/16-10
10. Iowa 5-9/15-11
11. Penn State 4-9/9-16
12t. Northwestern 3-11/14-12
12t. Wisconsin 3-11/7-17
14. Illinois 1-13/8-17

Looking at RPI data and the like, Ohio State and Maryland are obvious NCAA locks, and Michigan State is very close. Minnesota is a funny case - 10-4/18-7 ought to be good enough, but the RPI is 76 and the SOS is hideous because the Golden Gophers played an awful OOC schedule (not entirely their fault - I don't think anybody thought Duke would be so bad, but they lost that game, and the only other RPI top 75 OOC game was a loss to Auburn). The bottom 4 teams, and probably Iowa, are out. Everybody else has some work to do.

While Minnesota may be iffy for the tournament, they have a big positive in Rachel Banham. Should be enough to swing the pendulum. She's getting tweets from Kobe Bryant!

The tournament committee may not know who Kobe Bryant is. (j/k, but sometimes they seem remarkably dense.)

I just looked at Minnesota's remaining schedule, and it's not pretty: @Indiana, @Michigan State, Ohio State, @Maryland. 2-2 would be a very good result, and with the likely improved SOS, probably would make the Golden Gophers pretty secure for the NCAAs. But 1-3 (which seems likely) or 0-4 would be a different story.

In the end - the question to be answered is "how good are they (or not)". Absent a defining upset in their last 4, I think they would need a deep run in the B1G tourney. But I wouldn't rule it out, a star like Banham can be a great equalizer.

Minnesota now tied for third but has its last four games against the other top 5 teams.
First up is Indiana in fifth place at 8-5.
Indiana has a much better chance to move up as after Minnesota
has @ 10th place Iowa, @ 6th place Nebraska, and 11th place PSU.

8-6 Nebraska has @Ohio St., Purdue, Indiana, NW
7-7 Purdue has @Iowa, @Nebraska, Rutgers, Wisconsin
7-7 Michigan has @ Maryland, PSU, @NW, @Rutgers
7-7 Rutgers has Michigan St., Maryland, @Purdue, Michigan

I believe we need to go at least 3-1 to have a realistic chance to move up to 6th.
A win over Michigan State evens the season series at 1-1. At Mich State we lost 59-48
but the game was tied after 3 quarters.
Have not played Purdue or Michigan so wins necessary for standings
and also will help us in any tie breaker
We split the two games vs. Nebraska

Does anyone know the tie breaker for when two teams split the two games and end up with the same conference record? ( Assume no other team tied to make it a three or four team tie.)

Thanks. I was hoping someone would do this. I think you're right; we need to win 3 of 4 to have a chance at 6th. The Nebraska win over Michigan State really hurt us. It kept them a full game in front of us and creates the tough tie breaker. 3 of their last 4 are at home.

WE NEED TO WIN OUT. PERIOD OR GIVE UP ONE LOSS

Here's the group of teams that RU could at least in theory finish ahead of if all went perfectly:

3. Minnesota 10-4/18-7
4t. Michigan State 9-5/18-7
4t. Indiana 9-5/17-9
6. Nebraska 8-6/17-8
7t. Michigan 7-7/15-10
7t. Purdue 7-7/16-9
7t. Rutgers 7-7/16-10

If RU goes 3-1 to finish at 10-8, first, hello NCAAs.

Beyond that, if the loss is to Maryland, RU should finish ahead of Michigan and Purdue. Either Indiana or Nebraska has to lose one game because they play each other, and they both have two other toughish games (Indiana v. Purdue & Minnesota, Nebraska v. Ohio State and Purdue). We're probably rooting for Indiana, though, because it's easier to pass Nebraska. Michigan State has RU, Minnesota, @Illinois and Ohio State, so if RU wins, then the Spartans could finish at 10-8 with losses to Minnesota and the Buckeyes. Then there's Minnesota. If RU goes 3-1, and the Gophers go 0-4 (not out of the question), RU would be tied with them.

So, in other words, there's potential for a real mess, and it's not crazy to think RU could finish as high as 5th with a 3-1 record and a break or two.

well we aren't beating Maryland...go 3-1 and get to 19-11/10-8 and we dance...probably get 6th or 7th and get Northwestern or Michigan or Penn State in the first round of the Big 10 tourney

After tonight's games:

1. Ohio State 13-1
2. Maryland 11-2
3. Minnesota 10-4
4t. Michigan State 9-5
4t. Indiana 9-5
6. Nebraska 8-6
7t. Purdue 7-7
7t. Rutgers 7-7
9. Michigan 7-8
10. Iowa 5-9
11. Penn State 5-10
12t. Northwestern 3-12
12t. Wisconsin 3-12
14. Illinois 2-13

Really want to get to 6th. 7th or 8th means a matchup with either Ohio St or Maryland before the semi's

Things clearing up a bit. Iowa's loss to Penn St means we can finish ahead of them with 2 wins. Two wins also allows us to pass Michigan and Purdue in the B1G standings. Nebraska is trailing Indiana late and should fall to 8-9 with a game against Northwestern remaining. If we finish 9-9 we wind up tied with Nebraska if they beat Northwestern and ahead of them if they lose. I believe they have the tiebreaker if we both wind up at 9-9. Finishing ahead of them to win up 6th is huge. We would have a 2nd round game against a team not named Ohio St or Maryland.p

The loss to Michigan St was a killer.

#1)There is always hope, never forget that.
#2)WBB has been and still is the program that most RU fans expect the most from and complain when the Women's Basketball Program isn't among the best.
#3) Will RU win the next two games and do well enough in the Big Tourney to get an invite to the Dance ? See #1 and discard #5.
#4) Stringer has proven she is a good coach and we should expect the best from her in the Women's effort to make the NCAA Tourney this year . So #1 applies again

#5) there are those of little faith that want you top be like them.
Their posts will make you miserable if you let the constant whining that CVS needs to be replaced, the WBB team is playing poorly and won't get an invite, the WBB program has become one that we can't be proud of and other put-downs to make you get in a doom and gloom mood thinking losses instead of just rooting for wins .
So remember when you see those type of posts , do what I advise in #3.

I haven't played with all of the tiebreaks, but I think today's results put 6th in play for RU, even at 9-9. Go figure.

BeK- I think we lose the tiebreaker with Nebraska. Although we split the season series, they win on the 2nd criteria below. The beat Michigan St.

1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular-season.

2. Each team's record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings (or in the case of a tie for the championship, the next highest position in the regular-season standings), continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.
