Well it feels good to recap and post thoughts about games again because for about 11 games this year there was virtually nothing to talk about.

1. Overall I was pleased with todays performance. It is what it is. RU is shorthanded and lacks talent and lack bodies and lacks enough bball IQ. Today is pretty much the best you can ask for given the situation. I thought this game was going to be competitive and it was. I thought RU got some great carryover and confidence from the excellent shooting from the Lowell game. Indiana not a good road team, not a good defensive team and very turnover prone. I felt this was a game that if Indiana played down a bit, that RU could hang for much of the game. Listen Indiana gave their C-/D+ effort, I am not going to sugarcoat that. They turned the ball over 23 times, they took some ill advised 3s, and they let RU come back a couple times after seemingly being in control. Still RU must be given credit in this game for playing with full effort and believing they belong on the same floor. RU competed and that's all I can ask for right now. Sure it would have been nice to pull out a win and this game was winnable but there are too many warts on this team and with coaching to get upset about.

2. The emergence of Omari Grier is pretty stunning. Basically a role player with a limited role for much of the season, all of a sudden the last two games has blossomed into a 3 point thread that changes our offensive makeup and changes how opponents now have to defend RU. He has now scored 22 and 20 in his last 2 games after averaging under 4 ppg the prior 11 games he appeared. In fact Grier scored more points 42 in the last 2 games then he did in those previous 11 which was 41. Simple amazing to see and have to credit him for taking his opportunity as a 5th year senior and doing something with it and answering when he was called upon. Credit Eddie Jordan for trusting in him to be out there and giving him that opportunity. I do not know what the issue was before but I assume that with Freeman a huge part of the offense, Grier was not really going to be factored in other than as a 6th man. Now its absolutely necessary in Freemans absence to involve other players so I suppose this is what happened here.

3. Corey Sanders is legit. Not his best game but he was up against a good one in Farrell and his stat line not all that worse than Yogi's. Corey is a guy that would even as a freshmen start on at least half the teams in this league and get decent minutes on the others. This is the first time we can say this in a long time at this program. He is improving his decision making game by game and his shot selection has improved. I thought he was trying to do way too much early in this game but improved on that and that is a huge sign for such a young kid with talent who might want to do everything. This isn't a Rosario or Carter. This is the real deal.

4. Overlooked was the big guy Bryant getting into foul trouble. I believe when he got that 3rd foul in the first half, RU made its rally from 12 down. Then when he got his 4th and 5th, he sat again and RU was able to stay close. RU was able to limit the inside game of Indiana somewhat and didn't get abused on the inside. Obviously rebounding or lack thereof was a big reason for the loss today....Indiana outrebounded RU 43-29 and you give a team ranked in the top 5 in offense second chance opportunities they are going to make you pay. Unfortunately RU is so lacking on the inside that you have to live with being outboarded you just have to try and limit it.

5. I like some of the plays that Eddie runs for our offense but it seems feast or famine. There are those plays with great ball movement leading to open lay ins or dunks for Lewis or Laurant but there still is too much playground freelancing allowed. Most of it by Daniels, some by Foreman, a lot of not finishing around the basket because they are driving in with their heads down taking bad shots. This has been consistent so apparenty they have the greenlight to do it. Overall a mixed bag for Eddie today. Some good things that kept them in the game but some questionable personel calls such as Goode in the game for extended minutes early in the second half or why Grier seemed to disappear down the stretch and it was all about Daniels. I thought Daniels killed any chance of a win and there was not an effort to try and get Grier the ball. I just didn't like our offense at all those last 3 minutes.

6.He has been lauded here but I just do not think that Mike Williams is more than a career role player here. He plays hard, plays good defense but lets stop the nonsense that he is a good shooter. He is not. There is no evidence to suggest he is here. He is just 12-41 in his last 4 games and a goose egg today 0-6. His minutes are getting cut significantly right now mainly to Grier but even Goode getting time now.

7. When Greg Lewis comes to play RU is a different team. After sleepwalking through most of the season, he is showing signs of awakening. His Lowell performance was not good but 3 of the last 4 have seen him almost averaging a double double. I thought he was quite solid on both ends tonight. Went for 13 points/9 boards and shooting a whopping 11 times while making all 3 of his foul shots. Again like with Grier if Lewis is on, then the offense has an easier time flowing as the pressure is taken off of Sanders and Daniels to do it all.

8. Goode...well I just do not think he is a Big 10 player...too slow to play defense and he isn't even part of the offense. Just going to be used to give some minutes to rest others. DJ Foreman...how can this guy be winded after 8 minutes of play. I just question conditioning with him..Laurent...a lot of positives here. This is a very coachable player that will only get better. Obviously he is going to be at a disadvantage most nights as he is forced to play big but he is really making the most of his minutes. Daniels for every good play there is one if not two bad ones. He is a necessity because there is no one else so unfortunately we have to live with it and there is nothing we can do. I thought he killed the chance of a comeback with chucking up a bad shot and a horrific turnover in those last 4 minutes.

9. RAC is still dead and buried. Even with a close game the place was quiet as a church. Fans don't know how to root for the team anymore. Perhaps if there was some energy today this game could have tipped the other way but I really feel the fanbase has been beaten down so much that they are in show me mode now. Of course a bit more than 1/3 of the RAC was made up of Indiana fans that cant help

Agree with most of this. I'm baffled why Daniels is running the point with under 5 minutes left - AND COREY IS STILL ON THE FLOOR!!!! We've seen this a couple of times this year and it's just so frustrating.
In regards to Foreman, I think there was more to it than just being winded as it looked like he was clearly hurting. While he didnt have a great game, I thought he was a warrior for giving the team the minutes he did when we needed bigs out there and he clearly wasnt 100%

Foreman sprained his ankle against Lowell & seemed to reinjured it when he got submarined on the ally oop attempt, took off his sneaker as soon as he got to the bench, conditioning is not the issue he is trying to tough it out, since we have no one his size to replace him with.

Sanders is good and really like Laurent. RAC was quiet and we need the students to show up. Lewis needs to be a factor and he played well.

thank you for this info

Foreman was running the point because they were denying Sanders the ball. Unless there is pressure on the ball, it really doesn't matter who brings the ball up (excluding Lewis) as the first thing they do over half court is make a pass to a wing.

thank you for this info

Thought the insertion of Daniels in the first half and taking out Williams was the decision of the game. Love Grier shooting!

As well as Daniels played in the first half, get the ball in Corey's hands in the second. Daniels let succes go to his head.

Don't know what to make of the mascots at half time. Although fine in theory they looked moldy and dirty. The mackerel eating the Indy coach was funny.

Hate the little kids putting on the uniform shtick. Waiting for kid to fall on face and break nose.

Hate the little kid in uniforms shtick with uniforms with BIG EAST written across the back? Really?

Daniels had two terrible shot attempts around the 2-3 minute mark...could have cut the lead to 4 I think on the first but then Indiana drained a 3 after the miss. Next posession same thing , didn't even hit rim.

Unless it's Daniels, who doesn't pass the ball. That's my issue with him bringing the ball up

Yogi was guarding Corey and was in his grill. Corey yelled for Bishop to take it up. I have ZERO problem with this and agree with Jordan. If we are going to ask Corey to play a ridiculous amount of minutes spending time off the ball is not a bad idea. Of course this was an issue because on consecutive possessions Bishop went hero ball on us......and it's an issue because shots didn't fall.

Daniels just killed us late when you are looking for a senior to step up

During Goode's time on the floor we were minus 10, the difference in the game. With him on the court we lose the rebounding support either Williams or Daniels bring and that is really needed right now.

As for the lack of RAC energy, I think it mattered today. Where were the cheerleaders? A call for the defense chant would have been helpful when the game got close.

First game I've been to in a while, and I agree with everything bac said too. I was also sad about how many layups we missed. That was the game there.

Cheerleaders have never been the real cheer leaders for as long as I've been going to games. Cheers always start organically from super fans or students. Besides, cheerleaders are too busy tossing Rutgers t-shirts to youngsters in Indiana jerseys.

Bac- All good points. I had little problem with Eddie's offensive game plan today. He's not the one missing 16 layups. But, he is responsible for our disorganized defense that cannot cover the permiter and seems to make all the wrong switches. Our defense is really poor and it's not really a lack of efforrt, as the kids seem to be playing hard. It's a lack of coaching IMHO.

That's what we said about Grier before Monday's game. The hope is that Goode sees himself in Grier and takes the plunge.

Grier and Goode appear to be friendly with each other on the bench and I have often seen Grier trying to tutor Goode. Grier is a real class act....very humble; very respectful young man

I am. I also realize Grier's game has a ton of limitations. When he cools off, which can be Saturday, he becomes the same player we saw in the 1st 11 games.
From the earlier games it was hard to tell what kind of a player Grier is. He would start the game, come out after about 5 minutes and disappear onto the bench. Then we saw what he is capable of in the last two games. The only thought that I had was that EJ was trying to get the new guys experience in the early games and saving Grier for when the games counted or when he was forced to play him because half the team was on IR.

I think that Grier simply was supposed to be a bench roll player. When Freeman went down we needed scoring options and Grier may now be part of the offense run in practice. Also the inconsistency of Daniels and the failure of Williams now has opened more minutes for Grier. I don't know if he can keep it up that's the big question. I bet Indiana and Lowell didn't scout him but I bet Wisconsin does

Grier has a track record and history. In 2 years at Bradley he shot 32% from 3. Bradley was 9-24 last year and ended up #270. He played in less than half of the team's minutes.

Grier has given us a lift. Statisicly speaking it won't last. For the sake of our program we need Williams or Goode to do what Grier is doing now. Both of them are capable.

I agree with Goode I wrote after a previous game he played extended minutes and did absolutely nothing not even a shot and just gets fouls on defense. In another game he had wide open back to back 3 pointers and on one hit the side of the backboard and I thought he was supposed to be a great shooter. I don't know why Eddie plays him so much he seems like a great kid but he hurts the team when he is out there

I don't know if they are capable especially Goode

EJ and his assistants need to give Goode a confidence boost by running plays for him in practice. Who knows, maybe they do already, but I don't see it on the court. The kid plays scared and gets rid of the ball once he catches it like it's a hot potato.

Agree on all. Great post. Lay ups missed awful. Daniels at crunch time should not handle the ball, terrible decision maker.

Daniels is a bad player. Laurent, Foreman and Sanders is a nicer start for the rebuilding process.
Posts like this make you a bad poster. Daniels is one of ours. Wouldn't it be enough to simply say that you don't want Daniels to be the focus of ball handling and taking shots in the last few minutes of the game? Aren't the coach and staff the ones to take to task here, just like we would when they don't do the right things when there is a foul to give?

Yes, he definitely plays passive and/or scared. He does not even work hard to get open. I've never seen a guy stand erect and jog around the court to different spots just to stand there. With only 8 players he needs to snap out of it.

It's pretty simple. He is physically overmatched. That's not going to change anytime soon.
