Baseball beats Indiana, loses to Iowa Wednesday in Big Ten Tournament

What uniform brand are those uniforms? Not adidas and never saw that logo before.

So, if RU beats Iowa we win Pool C and move onto the semifinals?

Congrats to Rutgers baseball.A very good win and another game where good young pitching and timely hitting leads to success. The issue of good pitchers leaving early has delayed the growth of the baseball program. Reality is Mack will be a target of other programs.

Power hitting, great defensive plays (see second base), and great pitching from Freshman won this game.
Beat Iowa and this gritty team that played well during the end of the season has a legitimate shot at the ultimate championship goal.

Our young pitching by committee is well suited for this type of tournament....keep the bats warm and gloves ready.
We get three days' rest before the semifinals which is a single elimination.

It would be nice to win this tournament after the Big Ten screw job a few years ago when the double elimination was changed at the end to a single elimination.
- Rutgers got our first loss in the final and Michigan with one loss got the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
- Rutgers was left out of the NCAA Tournament with 45 wins, even though we were 1st in ten NCAA categories like runs scored per game.

Talk about deja vu. Watched the Rutgers Indiana baseball game this afternoon. Rutgers took a 5-0 lead into the ninth; reliever gave up a 2 run homerun; closer had to come in to close out the game. And then wham, the exact same thing played out tonight at Yankees stadium. Crazy!

Interesting tournament structure. While they call it pool play, RU and IU were basically playing for the right to face Iowa for a slot in the semis. The cruel part is the loser has to play a meaningless game with Iowa.

If run differential isn't a tie breaker, then what's the point of even playing the Indiana/Iowa game on Friday? B1G made a moronic mistake with this setup.

The new format tiebreaker is based on your tournament seed.

If teams are tied in pool play at 1-1, the best seeded team is in the semifinal.
If Iowa (3), Indiana (6), Rutgers (10) each have a 1-1 pool record, Iowa is in the Semifinal.

It wasn't changed at the end. That was the format of the tournament.

They are rewarding regular season performance.

In addition, if Iowa wins against us, they get what amounts to the benefit of a scrimmage against Indiana. They don’t have to use any of their best arms, and can give at bats to whoever they think could benefit from it.

Same with the UCLA pool with UCLA beating Illinois 8-6...UCLA gets a scrimmage tomorrow against Michigan...Illinois goes 1-1 and done

this says that the three weekend starters have combined to go 17-3 with a 3.10 ERA. They’ve struck out 244 batters and walked 79 over 38 starts and 203 innings pitched. With the Friday game being meaningless, if RU does get to the starter, Iowa may just go to another one of those quality starters in long relief because they still will have time to recover for the weekend. So many potential odd contingencies come out of this meaningless game scenario.

Rutgers had the tying run on third base with two outs in the ninth inning.
Nice gritty comeback in the eighth and ninth inning but came up short.
Given the pitching staff was 60% freshman, it was a good season.

As of today, Rutgers finished #84 in the NCAA RPI ranking, one notch above Penn State.
Big Ten led by #15 UCLA. Big Ten’s lowest is #231 Ohio State.
Rutgers was dead center among 17-team Big Ten RPI ranking.

In the Iowa game score was 0-0 early. Iowa had man on third & maybe 1st or 2nd. Owens pulled his infield in. Guy hit a grounder just out of the reach of our second baseman going toward the bag. Iowa with a run & maybe more that inning. Think they scored 3. Can't understand that strategy. I would have given up the early run for the out.

I questioned that as well. I guess he didn't think they would score too much against Iowa's ace.

And what season at RU in any sport would be complete without mentioning those who transferred out and are going to the NCAA. Jack Natali hit .340 with nine home runs at Cincinnati and they are going to the NCAA. Maximus Martin hit 332 with 14 home runs at Kansas State and they are going to the NCAA.
