The term is mentioned here a lot, I wanted to share an example of good basketball IQ.

Last nights game for the opening tip off I noticed how EMU lined up. Their point guard went to their offensive side near Geo Baker. This left no one back on their defensive side. Eugene was alone, the closest EMU player was even with him but several feet away.

Shaq Doorson was looking back to do the safe tap.

I mentioned to the people near me, the play is a tap to Eugene he is wide open for an easy drive.

Geo saw this, walked up to Shaq and told him about the opening.

2-0 Rutgers off an easy play made because of good Basketball IQ.

Geo is the man. He's always communicating out there and at stoppages of play. He has great leadership qualities and I see him for example trying to talk up Mathis quite a bit too noticing his frustration. Aware of his teammates and not just himself

Yeah, the team’s showing a lot of smarts, esp on the offensive end. You can see that (on top of natural instincts) they’re trying to implement was they’ve been taught, whether that be the hi-lo post play, the backdoor lobs from the guard position, the cross court reads against the zone. Yes, we’re committng a lot more of turnovers and the competition is about to jump up in class, but I have a little t of trust in Pike and in the team’s learning curve.

The team’s best IQ guy is Myles Johnson, as press breaker, high-lo sealing , his tremendous bounce passes instead of a regular pass on the break that has less of a chance to be deflected, his positioning to grab offensive rebounds or tip them up for a teammate without fouling. Myles has a chance to be our best center since Rashod. I would like some more low post targets and let him go to work with his drop step and other moves. We will see that more in conference with more man to man defense. We will likely see more zone from the weaker out of conference teams.

Crispin was talking up Myles BB IQ on BTN. Says he was impressed with his court awareness, ability to keep plays alive on the glass and be in the right position. "Has a feel for the game". Said the same about RHJ.

Caleb McConnell has it also. Right now he doesn’t appear comfortable at this level, but you can see he has the IQ. Hopefully he develops and it clicks, might just need a good offseason in the weight room.

One play a tough pass from Harper Jr was throw in his direction, Harper Jr was off balance from the pass he received, Instead of waiting for the ball Caleb stepped towards the ball like a safety. The ball would have easily been picked if he didn’t attack it. He ended up coming up with the ball, swung it to Montez in the corner for an open three that led to the Eugene put back dunk.

Great observation, which I missed watching at the RAC.

He needs to get stronger, but he has a good head and skills

Definitely needs to hit the weight room, I know he was injured when he came to campus, hopefully he starts to feel a little more comfortable. Think he needs to get in the lane and get a couple of 8-10 footers to drop for him. Geo will need some rest and a confident Caleb will help.

Another great example of basketball IQ is how Harper consistently finds the right spot to be on the baseline against zones. Subtle and nothing sexy but just a guy who knows where to be and has a feel for the game

Harper probably has a high IQ, but that spot is where he is told to be. High post is the obvious entry point vs. zone. Baseline 10 feet from the basket is another.

And yet he seems to be the only one consistently finding the spot. If everyone did what they were coached to do you would have nothing but perfect players on the court always in the right spot always making the right plays. Give the player some credit. He has great feel for where to be. It's obvious

Harper had a great touch pass from the short corner into the hands of a teammate that was ready for the pass. We haven't seen that in a looooong time. A joy to watch our offense.

Johnson will get lots of minutes from here on out.....

I will say that he looked very frustrated on offense this past game..... nothing seemed to work out for him as far as scoring....there were several instances of him shaking his head in disgust as he ran back on defense....

the rest of his game was fine.....but I think he looks to score, get his points, and it did not
happen for him....

Yeah frustrated offensively as he should have had more touches but he did not let him affect his defense, rebounding, passing or shot blocking. He will be great here for 4 years. I really think when he comes in that he gets targeted in the low post to see more of his offensive moves. He dropped stepped and banked a hook shot against FDU but not a lot since that game. Plus I am interested in how teams play him. Some are doubling Eugene already and Myles is a better passer so looking for him to make that diagonal pass when he gets doubled for a wide open three .

Very good pass. Last year Freeman did a similar touch pass to Doucoure off a rebound for a dunk, shocked me.

Myles Johnson will be very good at RU.
This IQ thread is great. I like all of your examples.

Harper Jr., as you guys mentioned, as "it" and will be very good also.
