Latest Update before the final game about 7 posts below.

13-0 Maryland has
at Michigan State Monday, at Wisconsin Thur, Penn State, at Northwestern, Indiana
Maryland on the way to the #1 seed in the conference tournie.

12-2 Iowa has
at Minnesota Tues, at Ohio State Saturday, Wisconsin, Minnesota
Rutgers should want Iowa to beat Ohio State and Minnesota.
Yes, Iowa then earns the #2 seed but may help Rutgers get the 3.
Iowa would need to lose three for Rutgers to pass them for the two seed

10-4 Rutgers has
Illinois Tues, at Michigan State Sunday, at Northwestern Thur 2/26, Indiana Sunday 3/1
Can't sleep on any team. Illinois has been an odd team at only 13-13
but has some solid wins including by 26 points over Minnesota last week.
Northwestern is 18-6, 8-5. Has Rutgers at home 2/26
That is the only top six game we have left.
But unless we suffer an upset Rutgers can
end up 3 or 4 which is important for seeding, # of games needed to win the tournament.
Three seed better than #4 as #3 in bracket with 6, then 2 while the 4 is in bracket with 5, then 1.
Tie breaker is unfavorable with the losses to Iowa and Ohio State.

9-5 Ohio State has
Purdue Tues, Iowa Saturday, at Penn State, at Nebraska
At least one of Ohio State and Iowa has to lose a game as they play Sat 2/21
We may be big Cornhusker fans on March 1.

9-5 Minnesota has
Iowa Tues 2/17, Michigan Saturday, at Nebraska, at Iowa
Iowa twice and at Nebraska, plus we have the tie breaker.
Gophers not likely to earn a better seed than Rutgers.

9-5 Northwestern has
Nebraska Wed, at Wisconsin Sunday, Rutgers, Maryland

8-6 Nebraska has
at Northwestern Wed, at Indiana Saturday, Minnesota, Ohio State
After the three losses to Rutgers and Maryland and Iowa, can the Huskers
respond? Can they help us by beating any of those around us
as they play all three.

Re: Big Ten Standings and Remaining Games

important for RU to be in that 2-3 game and avoid Maryland in the semi final of the tourney, of course most important is just to finish in the top 4. Maryland is a loss lets be frank about it. I think RU may trip up at Northwestern or even at Michigan State...even so a 4-2 finish puts them at 13-5....that is most likely enough for top 4 and probably top 3 given a lot of those teams are playing one another...the only drawback is not having the tiebreak with OSU.

To finish 2nd RU is going to hope Iowa loses all those road games but they have been playing so well.

a 4-1 finish for RU would put them at 22-6 overall going into the Big 10 tourney, sets them up well for a 6 seed or better in the NCAA tourney

Re: Big Ten Standings and Remaining Games

Maryland game aside, the game that most concerns me is the one at NW. Do we know much about them, other than the fact that they have won 17 games already? My fear is that they will be a Princeton-type team that has good fundamentals, plays smart, and will be tricky from time to time, catching their opponents off-guard. Illinois is another unknown quantity and seems to be rather inconsistent. But hopefully our style of play will be something they're not accustomed to plus we get them at home.

On paper, at least, we seem to have the easiest slate of games remaining. And that also means that we have likely played the most difficult schedule to date. We should be favored in every game other than tomorrow night at UMd.

Re: Big Ten Standings and Remaining Games

Bump, as updated.

Re: Big Ten Standings and Remaining Games after 2/12 games

Don't understand the comment that RU needs to avoid the 4 seed so as not to play Maryland in the first round. Doesn't 4 seed get a bye in first two rounds? Theoretically, they should then play the 5 seed in their first game (assuming seeds win according to seeds). The winner of that game would play the 1 seed, in theory.

Big Ten Tournament Bracket set up

Re the tournament:

The first round is the bottom four playing to eliminate two. Wednesday March 4.
That leaves 12 teams and the brackets are then a typical 12 team tournie set up.

Second round.
The (11 vs. 14) winner plays the 6 seed.
And on that half of the bracket the 7 plays 10
On the other half of the bracket the (12 vs. 13) winner plays the 5 seed.
And on that half the 8 plays the 9.
These eight play to eliminate four.
Top four have byes.
Now you are down to eight teams.

Third round: the four winners from round two are paired against the top four
If seeds hold 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5.
We are all hoping Rutgers earns a top 4 seed; we are currently alone in third place.
If a top 4 seed our first game would be Friday March 6.

Fourth round:
(1 vs. 8) winner plays (4 vs. 5) winner
(2 vs. 7) winner plays (3 vs. 6) winner

Fifth round: the final. March 8 Sunday

So a top 4 seed means you need to win three to be the champ
Seeds 5 through 10 would need to win four.
11 through 14 would need to win five.

link not coming through for some reason????

17-0 Maryland has
Indiana
Maryland on the way to the #1 seed in the conference tournie.

13-4 Iowa has
Minnesota Sunday 3/1
Gophers beat Iowa by 13 a week ago.
Iowa losses: Maryland, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio State

12-5 Ohio State has
at Nebraska Sun 3/1
Huge win over Iowa last weekend, and by 18 points
We may be big Cornhusker fans on March 1.
Ohio State losses: Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota. Iowa, Illinois

12-5 Northwestern has
Maryland
NW losses: Iowa twice, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State

11-6 Rutgers has
Indiana 3/1
Our losses: Ohio St., Iowa, Maryland x2, Mich. St., Northwestern

11-6 Minnesota has
at Iowa 3/1
Loss at Nebraska Tuesday when they had a shot at the two seed with two wins.
Gopher losses: Maryland, Purdue, Illinois, Nebraska, NW, Rutgers

Ohio State, Minnesota, and Northwestern are all 1-1 against each other.
Ohio State beat NW, lost to Minnesota. Also beat Rutgers
Northwestern lost to Ohio State, beat Minnesota Also beat Rutgers Thursday
Minnesota beat Ohio State, lost to NW. Lost to Rutgers
Minnesota and Ohio State have wins vs. Iowa.
This can be a factor in tie breaking if Iowa holds on to 2nd.

10-7 Nebraska has
Ohio State.

I added the losses as they could factor into tie-breaker scenarios.
We have to right our own ship and take care of Indiana Sunday
But with Minnesota facing Iowa and NW vs. Maryland and Ohio State vs. Nebraska
it adds so many possibilities for final seeding for the Big Ten Tournament
We do not fare well in most tie-breaker scenarios so we will be 5 or 6
Since we will not be 3 or above, IMHO 6 would be a good spot
Would face the (11 vs. 14) winner, then need to beat #3 to potentially play #2 to get to the final
As the 5 seed would face the (12 vs. 13) winner, then need to beat #4, then #1 to get to the final.
(Maryland is not losing to the 8 vs.9 winner).

Take care of business this week, and it is likely we have all but sown up 3rd place. We would have a 2 game lead with 2 games to go, one being a home game against Indiana. All the 5 loss teams play MD, Iowa, or Neb.

We have a one game lead over three teams tied for fourth.
Iowa can knock two of those down this week.
But even that doesn't guarantee the three seed
Unless Nebraska beats Northwestern they will likely have a chance to pass us when we visit Chicago,
even if we win two this week. (The tie breaker would be in their favor)
But NW then closes with Maryland
As I said above, if NW passes us they will have earned it.

Of course we could just win the last four and then it doesn't matter what those behind us do!

RU seems to be peaking, running on all cylinders at the right time of the season. Hopefully, we continue to do well on the road, where we've lost just twice, one of those to UMd. MSU has played several teams close at home so that will not be an easy contest but the game that still concerns me the most is NW. Hopefully Nebraska (I think) will knock them off. Looking at NW's scores, it's hard to figure them out except that they seem to find ways to win many of their close games and have really blown out several lesser teams.

It would be real sweet to come home for the regular season finale against IU with a 22-6 record and third place already sewn up.

Bump.
Bad, bad loss to Michigan State.
No longer control our position.
Even with wins over Northwestern and Indiana can fall out of the top four seeds

14. 3-13 10-17 Purdue

15-0 Maryland has
Penn State, at Northwestern, Indiana
Maryland on the way to the #1 seed in the conference tournie.

12-4 Iowa has
Wisconsin Thur 2/26, Minnesota Sunday 3/1
Gophers beat Iowa by 13 a week ago.

11-5 Rutgers has
at Northwestern Thur 2/26, Indiana 3/1
Northwestern is 21-6, 11-5. Has Rutgers at home 2/26
Rutgers can end up 3 or 4 which is important for seeding, # of games needed to win the tournament.
#2 seed opens tournament against winner of the (7 vs. 10) game
#3 seed likely to play the #6, unless the #6 loses to the (11 vs. 14) winner
But three seed much better than #4 as #3 in bracket with 6, then 2 while the 4 is in bracket with 5, then 1.
Tie breaker is unfavorable with the losses to Iowa and Ohio State.
We have the head to head tie break with Minnesota.
In a three team tie with the teams all 1-1 against each other the tie break goes
to record/winning percentage vs. the top team(s).
All will be 0-x against maryland

11-5 Ohio State has
at Penn State Thur 2/26, at Nebraska Sun 3/1
Huge win over Iowa over the weekend, and by 18 points
We may be big Cornhusker fans on March 1.

11-5 Minnesota has
at Nebraska Tues 2/24, at Iowa 3/1
Iowa and at Nebraska, plus we have the tie breaker..
But big win over Iowa Tues 2/17 might help them in the tie breaker

11-5 Northwestern has
Rutgers, Maryland
They get a shot at us Thur 2/26.
Have the Terps to close the regular season.
If they pass us they will have earned it.

Ohio State, Minnesota, and Northwestern are all 1-1 against each other.
Ohio State beat NW, lost to Minnesota, beat Rutgers.
Northwestern lost to Ohio State, beat Minnesota, plays Rutgers Thursday
Minnesota beat Ohio State, lost to Rutgers, lost to NW
Minnesota and Ohio State have wins vs. Iowa.
This can be a factor in tie breaking if Iowa holds on to 2nd.

9-7 Nebraska has
Minnesota, Ohio State.

None of the weekend games went the way we would have wished
especially our poor showing at Michigan State.
Instead of being confident of at least a four seed and a possible two seed
we are now hoping we don't fall to a 5 or 6.
We were in control of our position. Now we are not.
Even if we win the two remaining games we can fall out of top 4 seeding for the Big Ten Tournament.

The hope for a third seed is still alive. Have to be huge Nebraska Cornhusker fans this week. If RU wins their games at Northwestern and Indiana and Nebraska wins at home against Minnesota and Ohio State then RU gets the third seed...its as simple as that. RU can also get the third seed if Minnesota loses at Iowa plus one Ohio State loss. Its an advantage having Minnesota and Ohio State having to play both games on the road. I think there is a fair chance of these scenerios playing out. If OSU wins their last two then RU cannot finish third and most likely is in the 4/5 game unless they lose to Northwestern. RU wins any tiebreak against Minnesota so that is huge for the bye

If RU loses to Northwestern RU could actually fall to the 6 seed which means playing on the first day, so while they will avoid the Maryland side of the bracket it makes for an extra game

the one team I don't want to play in the tourney is Ohio State. If RU gets the third, our opponent would most likely be Northwestern or Nebraska.

Re: Big Ten Standings and Remaining Games after 2/16 games

Bac- there is no way Rutgers will wind up playing on the FIRST day. The tournament begins on Wednesday With 11 vs 14 and 12 vs 13. We could wind up playing on Thursday if we don't finish in the Top 4 and get the double bye. It would mean 4 games in four days to the Championship rather than 3

Re: Big Ten Standings and Remaining Games after 2/16 games

In most cases we only win a tie breaker with Minnesota if it is a two team tie.
If it is a three or four team tie we don't fare well, depending on the other team(s), of course.
So many possibilities which we allowed to be alive by losing to Michigan State.

And if you don't earn a four seed or above to get the two round bye
a six seed is not awful. Play the (11 vs. 14) winner on Thursday
then with a win play the 3 seed. If you beat them likely to face the 2 seed
in order to get to the final.
If you are the 5 seed need to beat the (12 vs. 13) winner and the 4
to then get a chance at the 1 to get to the final.

Would you rather have to face the 3, then 2 or the 4, then 1?

Does playing Thursday against a weak team get you accustomed to the arena
while your Friday opponent is taking that floor for the first time against you?
