We are 1 month from the burning of the Dortch redshirt request and it's not about how productive the freshman is or isn't. It just comes down to a few plays made here or there.
First, he needs a ton of work on his offensive game, which isn't going to be there in the last stretch of the last 3 games. But there's at least something that gets his arms and length in the way at times. He's not really supposed to be used as a post defender, so I'm not going to ask him at 200 lbs (maybe) to stop legitimate centers or Power Forward types.
69 Total Minutes played in 9 games.
11 Total points
5 of 7 from the floor
1 of 3 from the FT line
14 rebounds
6 blocked shots
4 steals
14 fouls
2 assists
These are not big-time numbers, but the roster needs just a few extra plays made here or there and a couple of altered shots here or there.
Tonight's game vs USC was completely unexpected and 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 14 minutes off the bench.
With Ogbole now back and the game in Michigan Thursday night, I fully expect some minutes with him leaning on Vlad Golden and hopefully battling inside. On the other hand, while Dortch has no chance at around 200 lbs to stop a Golden or Wolf of Michigan, he does have a quick jump that might be able to steal a couple of rebounds and dunk or layup, using his quickness.
If you get 4 easy shots or attempts at baskets around the hoop or on dunks, everything you get, takes a little more pressure off of Ace, Dylan and the other starters.
Dortch game was really good to see how the bench was hyped up for him making plays. Its relatively easy to see, his teammates like the kid and there's some chemistry being built late in the season with him getting more minutes.
Getting minutes for freshman, has to be exciting to see for future recruits and especially with 2025 PG commit Lino Mark sitting right behind the RU bench. I'm glad Dortch is getting a chance in a tough spot so late in the season, but he's provided a spark in the Northwestern road win and tonight vs USC. Every little bit of productivity matters.....
