I actually think Caleb has NBA potential. He is there as a defender, but imo he needs one more year in school to work on his offense and to be featured more.
I know this is self-serving from a fan. If Caleb goes to the league, congrats, thanks for the memories, and wish him all the best as he fulfills his dreams. But this is one where returning may make some sense

He'll be back. I think he has a chance too because of his defense but needs to shoot better.

McConnell might be making the announcement to get a evaluation as to what skills need improvement prior to get drafted the following year similar to Harper and Baker scenario.His options for next season are overseas play,NBA minor league or return to Rutgers.I say he returns to Rutgers and works on his skills while getting a Masters degree.
This is a tough one. Does Caleb staying another year make him more than an undrafted/second round pick? If he comes back he’s going to one to be more of a focal point on offense. Is this something that’s even feasible?

He won't get drafted but he'll get some workouts and who knows from there.

I don’t think so. None of his bois are coming back plus if he were to go to a different school the chemistry with others just won’t be there. He thrives off great chemistry with players around him. In the NBA he can find that just needs the right team

I think we all just need to agree that guys taking their 5th year somewhere else is different from other transfers. Eugene bolted on the team. JY, Myles, Caleb if he goes elsewhere... I see that as a different situation altogether.
He could be a 3 and D guy at next level, if he were to become a consistent 40% 3 point shooter….come back and prove it here for 30 gamed next year. Can see him be a Courtney Lee type in NBA
Dahntay Jones was also an elite level high flying athlete. Caleb fits the mold of 3 and D guy with his length. Just needs to develop a real consistent 3 pointer, as I’m sure that is the feedback he’ll get. Plenty of shots to get up here next year if he’s back.
Caleb finds his way to be a 34-36% shooter and he could possibly work himself into the NBA. He would need another year.

Just for clarity on procedure, a college player with remaining eligibility must “declare” for the NBA draft to even work out for any NBA team or have direct communication with NBA teams. That’s always worth keeping in mind if you see a player “declare for the NBA draft."

May 16-22 - NBA Combine.
June 1 - NCAA set deadline for college players to withdraw and retain college eligibility.
June 13, 5 p.m. - NBA set early entry withdrawal deadline (not really material to college players with remaining eligibility).

I think CM is a good college player. I don't see him playing in the NBA (maybe overseas) whether he comes back or not. If he is coming back solely to improve his NBA stock, which means having a more significant offensive role than in the past, that might not be in our teams best interest. Yes he had a nice offensive game (first half really) against ND, but he has been no more reliable than the others offensively, and that would likely be the same next year. He would certainly be an asset to the 22-23 team but I would hope it would be with the understanding that his role (defense, rebounding, steals, 10 PPG and leadership) would be similar to what it has been in the past. His return should not influence Pike's mandate to add significant scoring to the roster for next year.
why do you think this? Not disputing it can happen but don’t understand why you’re so convinced. Does he have a bad relationship with Pike? Is he unhappy with his role?
If playing for another college was realistically in play wouldn’t he have announced that he’s entering the portal in tandem with declaring for the draft? That’s what JY did. Things could always change but Pike’s statement makes it seem like Caleb will go through the process and make a decision based on the feedback - to either return to RU, stay in the draft process / likely go the G league route, or play abroad.
To answer your first question - this is a rare instance for a super senior where there is true potential for the answer to be, yes. I’m not saying this is going to happen - but if he were to hypothetically return, shoot the percentages he shot at his frosh year with last year’s attempt volume, AND ended up getting the national DPOY award, he’d be a near lock to get drafted and could even get 1st round consideration. I’m not saying this outcome isn’t a long shot, but it wouldn’t be a completely ridiculous goal for him to have at this point either.

The only difference with the 5th year is that the athlete is now matriculated in a graduate program.
So in Myles case, your 100% correct. He chose to move on to a very good program near where he eventually wants to land a job. Makes perfect sense.
I like JY, but sorry, it’s not the same. He didn’t transfer for Oregon’s academics or to go back home after 4 years. He just decided to attend a different college. It’s not different from Mathis moving on IMO.
