Caleb

I think he comes back but hard to say 99% when you don’t know him. He’s not getting drafted but maybe he wants to go overseas and play professionally.

I have no idea who RU72 is but clearly he’s well connected to internal team information.
When he posts, it’s essential fact. Unless someone here has proof otherwise.
He did say it would be a major upset if we didn't get Hammond but I get that things evolved quickly with Spencer jumping ahead.

Not obligated to but we're going to. In the age of the portal almost no team is going to have 13 happy "true" scholarship players.
I was thinking we’d be targeting someone like Agee for that last spot rather than give it to Terry but maybe not.

I said this weeks ago.
Caleb already knows his draft grade and prospects.
Honestly, he knew before he declared if he was going to stay in the draft/leave college or return to Rutgers.

He got his official feedback weeks ago probably.
It was never a secret or question that his grade is 2nd round/undrafted likely.

The only question is when does he make it "official".
NBA Combine/G-League Showcase is May 16-22 (he'll likely not be invited).
Early entry withdrawal deadline is June 13.

I'd bet he doesn't make it official until June 12th.
Luckily it seems he's been honest with the coaching staff and letting them know so they can plan accordingly instead of having to wait.

Caleb coming back would be enormous. I’m plenty comfortable with three returning started like Cliff, Paul, and Caleb. I expect the typical Pike steady development for guys like Mag, Reiber, and Hyatt. Hopefully Spencer is legit as it sure seems. We have a couple of guys backing up the guard spots and just need that backup 4/5. Not bad.

He was leaning toward Hammond, but as of yesterday was saying we'd definitely get at least 1 of Hammond, Spencer, and Dawes and that he wasn't sure who "Plan A" was. Spencer committed later in the evening.

Would be a huge upset if he does not come to Rutgers. Would seem clear that Rutgers will get at a minimum one of Hammond,Spencer and Dawes. My own theory is that the Big Ten affiliation is more helpful with portal than high school kids, who recently have chosen Nova,UConn , Georgetown,DePaul and of course the trump card of Duke over everyone.

Not sure who is plan A bit Rutgers is DEFINITELY getting one of the 3 very soon.

I thought he would come back given that we've had no wings visiting and backed away from that RJ kid who was similar in build. Would mean we only need a backup 4/5 who can hopefully play some defense and rebound. Hopefully Threeber will bulk up to the 240-245 range which his frame can easily handle.

I don’t know who that is. He’s with Rutgers?
RU72 is Richard Kent. A good portion of the board knows who he is.

These links will give you some of his background...

I am re-reading the "What if?" story which was a good one. We all know what the biggest "What if?" was back in the day. You could also call it "WTF?!"

If Caleb returns, what is the starting lineup?

Spencer Mulcahy McConnell Hyatt Omoruyi?

That would be a BIG lineup.

Does he start Miller or Simpson to get more quickness? Then either Spencer goes to the bench or Hyatt?

If Hyatt goes to the bench, either Caleb or Paul has to guard the 4. I think we need Caleb guarding the perimeter mainly unless the team's best player is the 4 maybe. We need his perimeter defense.

Some interesting lineup combos to consider

It does not sound like that is the plan from mods and other sources. That might be it or a depth 5 with a walk on getting one and another open scholarship
The open ended questions........
1. Can Hyatt be an asset in 2022-23......he wasnt; in 2021-22, no sugar coating!
2. Will Mag make the giant leap you and I are expecting?
3. How ready is Simpson?

If the answers are not all favorable we need Caleb + another body

I agree. Pike is definitely taking a risk. He is betting on his guys to step up. If they don't live up to expectations and/or we get hit with injuries, his scholarship usage will come into question.

He knows the guys on his team though. I have faith in Pike until he proves otherwise

I know there is the "18-22 year olds can play forever crowd". I am pretty confident that we fatigued towards the end of last season. I don't want to be in the same boat playing 4 perimeter guys 36+ minutes again.

The problem is/was preseason he didn't know Hyatt, which is totally understandable. When I told him in June that I was worried about defense he specifically said well you will love Hyatt then.

Hyatt's defense got better and he was much better when he got switched to the 4. Hyatt can't guard the 3 he is a 4. I am really not concerned with his D at the 4 after a year with Pike.

Some concerns still with the roster. Hyatt's D at the 4 isn't one of them for me. It will be average at minimum

I’m not concerned with his D at the 4 on it’s own. I’m concerned that with Paul and Cam in the backcourt together most of the game, having Caleb on bail out at the 3 won’t be enough. I don’t see Hyatt helping in this respect at the 4. At best he’s not a liability in terms of guarding his own guy. If we need someone else to provide defensive spark with Caleb, my hope lies more with Mag. I could see potential for that being a really good line up - Paul, Cam, Caleb, Mag and Cliff - if Mag takes steps forward on offense.

More concerned with Hyatt’s offensive output / efficiency than anything. Defense not so much, especially with some of the league’s better 4’s (Liddell and Murray) leaving the conference

By the end of the season, Hyatt was mostly playing with both Geo and Caleb in the game or Miller on the floor with one of those 2. Defensively, we couldn’t play him and Paul together on defense in the perimeter game. If Sepencer turns out to be sub par on defense, I don’t see Hyatt playing much with both him and Paul together unless he really improves in this area.

Re 72 Yes he has good info (but there was a certain "take it to the bank" that well, would have led to the account being closed). But his info is definitely of interest.

I’m not saying I love Hyatt’s defense, it’s more so out of need that I think we’ll need one of him / Mag on the floor fairly often (just from a size standpoint). Team is certainly shaping up to be predicated around guard-play and Cliff, but when it comes to guarding bigger wings/forwards, we don’t exactly have a ton of options

By the end of the season Hyatt's minutes were simply the minutes Harper was on the bench.

The best on ball defenders are Caleb Miller and Mag. I can see Hyatt potentially being a plus defender at the 4 especially if you include rebounding.

Paul Caleb Cliff are good help defenders and I would expect Spencer to be as well
