Seriously, I really don’t understand it. These are D1 athletes and players. We never have someone who can shoot like the O’Hearn kid 2nite. It seems like our players do not improve on offense and even regress. I like Pike but the lack of offense and shooting is overly frustrating
Beats the hell out of me. Thought one of the prerequisites of being a basketball player was being able to put the ball through the hoop, especially for a D1 hooper.

You ever heard of Bill Russell ?

If I’m Pikes I hire someone NOW to do nothing whatsoever other than follow potential transfers all season long who can SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT the daylights out of the ball. I’d have to imagine it drives him nuts as well as everyone else.
But our coaches are all guards and Knight was a great shooter in college so do we never coach these guys in shooting even RHJ looks like he changed his shooting motion and it looks to me to be for the worse but this thread is a definite and legitimate question

Pike recruits defense first — long lanky guards. He needs to branch out to include a pure shooter. Palmqist is supposed to be that shooter, but he apparently can’t play D in Pike’s system. So maybe that needs to change too.

Bad mechanics pure and simple
There is obviously no one on the staff that is working on this
Geo shoots on the way down
RHJ has lowered his release point for some reason, his mechanics were better last year
Hyatt, cliff and Caleb all have funky releases
The only guys I see with good mechanics
Paul (and he improved his)
Reiber
Palmquist
Elbow in
Roll off the hand
Guide only with the opposite
Shooting side foot slightly in front
Repeat

Seems as if Pikell needs to look in the mirror and change some things up bc right now we aren’t shooting and we arent hustling or rebounding either. D has been ok but not like we have run a gauntlet of a schedule so far. Let’s see when we play the big boys.

There’s no leadership from the players on this team or at least a player that inspires the others. It’s as big of a problem as the shooting. The team just seems to be lifeless. Where is a guy like Cassius Winston who has the pure will to make the team compete? I guess that guy may be playing for Oregon.

Not a difficult question. We are very long and athletic, but not terribly skilled. That’s our formula. No pure shooters. Most top tier programs are the same. Lights-out shooters are rare animals.
Long and athletic is fine if you can take advantage of that... Like getting to the hoop and slamming some dunks. We can't dunk

Today proved that offense is not the big problem with this team. They just can’t defend at nearly the same level as recent years, especially the 3 point line. You can’t beat anyone giving up 16 3 point shots on 50% shooting from the arc!

Team rankings right now for shooting:

3P%
.346 (9/26) - Baker
.303 (10/33) - Harper
.250 (3/12) - Jones
.200 (3/15) - Mulcahy
.154 (2/13) - Hyatt
.000 (0/10) - McConnell
.000 (0/2) - Mag
.000 (0/1) - Palmquist

Overall: .243 (27/111)
2020-21: .313 (172/550)
2019-20: .311 (170/547)

So far no one has shown they can be a reliable shooter from the arc. Only Baker has a decent season average, but he's run hot and cold (.250, .200, .750, .429, .167 through 5 games)

2P%
.652 (30/46) - Omoruyi
.647 (11/17) - Jones
.538 (7/13) - Agee
.500 (6/12) - Mag
.465 (20/43) - Harper
.458 (11/24) - Baker
.406 (13/32) - Hyatt
.378 (14/37) - Mulcahy
.333 (1/3) - Reiber
.296 (8/27) - McConnell
.000 (0/1) - Palmquist

Overall: .475 (121/255)
2020-21: .517 (568/1098)
2019-20: .505 (651/1288)

Agee is still an enigma to me, after having a strong game vs UMass. He may just still be getting up to speed. Mag might be something for us this year at a forward spot - pretty good defense and decent interior shooting. McConnell and Mulcahy shot .426 and .493 respectively from 2P over the last 2 seasons... looks like Mulcahy is pulling out of that slump, but McConnell hasn't yet shown signs of life there.

FT%
1.000 (2/2) - Palmquist
.833 (5/6) - Jones
.818 (9/11) - Mulcahy
.778 (7/9) - Baker
.778 (7/9) - Hyatt
.750 (3/4) - Mag
.700 (7/10) - Agee
.684 (13/19) - Omoruyi
.667 (20/30) - Harper
.400 (4/10) - McConnell
.000 (0/2) - Reiber

Overall: .688 (77/112)
2020-21: .636 (285/448)
2019-20: .645 (344/533)

Amazingly, it's Harper and McConnell who are bringing down our average the most. If they were shooting their average over the last two years (.722 and .794 respectively), our team average would be .732

I don’t see how Harpers new mechanics help him with his NBA chances. It’s too low for the league. I understand he got advice from NBA scouts in off-season but somebody off on

McConnell should not be allowed to shoot in any capacity whatsoever. He is horrid

There are problems on offense and defense. On offense the 3 point shooting is abysmal and at crunch time there are no go to scorers with Baker and Harper injured. On defense players lack the lateral quickness to stop dribble drives to the basket without excessive fouling and are totally clueless in defending the 3 point line.Lets not forget the first six games were against mediocre competition and Rutgers loss the last three games .

At least we get to play Maine at the JMAC on Dec 29th.... Not sure if this was already mentioned, but they're currently ranked last in 3PT% in D1, shooting 19.8% for the season, but only 17.8% against D1 teams. So we should have a chance to outshoot them from 3. Can't wait.

Shooting is recruited, Jones may be the only shooter we have. When you miss literally dozens of open shots you can't blame the coaching...its the players. CMON SCOTT RU

Geo used to be that guy, you could tell he drew a lot of inspiration from corey sanders his first season. That carried over into the next two then covid hit and the guy just seems to be counting the minutes till he’s out of here. Looked like he was about to keel over on the bench last game, or fall asleep.
