Can the freaking band...

Another item the band should stop: When an opposing player fouls out, stop chanting "Left, right" once our player gets the ball to shoot free throws.

Every once in a while, you see an opposing player savvy enough to slowly walk by the bench, just to take his seat so the band yells "Sit Down" just as our player is taking the free throw. Pretty clever of them to get our band to distract our player. Our band should be smart enough not to do it.
I was at a game Saturday and this almost happened, but the students were wise enough to hold off on the "sit down" part.

Did anyone at the BU game notice one of the band members screaming every time the opponent shot a free throw? Not yelling...but actually screaming. Seemed a little over the top to me

What they should do is switch it up every possession
Start counting down 10, 9, 8 ,7..... but do it when when the clock is at 7 so it throws them off. Next time start early so it keeps them on their toes. This would confuse the hell out of the offense

They do. They only count down accurately for us. They count down either too late or too early for the opponents.

They should count down accurately for us, because alerting our players to the dwindling shot clock is helpful for our team. They should stay quiet for the opponent, because alerting them to the dwindling shot clock is helpful for the opponent, and our band doesn't want to help the opponent.

I have seen it work so many times, I am not sure its a big deal. Maybe they are using it too often though.

Pet peeve of mine is when we're shooting FT and the entire crowd goes dead silent, allowing 10-15 of the opposing fans to distract our shooter because it's the only noise being made in the building. Wish we could organize white noise during our FTs

At some point, a college ball player has to be able to shoot over crowd noise. If visiting fans are able to mess them up, they don't stand a chance on the road.

I've only missed about 6 home games in the past 18 seasons. I've only seen counting down the shot clock for the opponent work once, and that was before the new shot clocks which were visible from the side. In that case, the opponent player, off on the side, threw up a hurried shot as the band counted 1, even though there was about 3 seconds left on the shot clock and the right move would have been a pass to an open player.

Other than that, I've never seen it work. But most times, when the opponent has the ball and is focused on getting open or fighting for position, they hear the band start to count down the shot clock and realize that time is dwindling. They then look at the basket (or the opposite basket if their back is to the basket) and see how much time is really left. If the band hadn't counted the shot clock, time may have expired without them looking at the shot clock.

But even if you are right, and it works more than once every 18 years, even if it works twice a season, it still fails 4-8 times a season. So it hurts us far more often than it helps us.

I've been at damn near every game for 10 years. I guess it is a little up for debate whether it "worked" or not, but I think its more than that.

Either way, I would argue it should be used very selectively for the reasons you state. Definitely not an every game thing.

It’s easily fixed - Pikiell just has to say something to them. I’m not sure why he hasn’t yet.

That’s ECACTLY what every student should do lol!

Taking the contraian positions;;;

If counting down the clock in advance of the actual time left makes the game more fun for the students, then by all means go right ahead.

And based on the way we shoot free throws, perhaps doing something different like clapping before the shot will actually improve our foul shooting. Nothing else seems to help.

We're shooting 100% on free throws attempted directly after somebody yells "Fire Chris Ash" so let's see how far we can push that.
