Can they try throwing down field once?

Sure, you score on a drive where you rush and they can't stop your RBs. Let's throw a low percentage deep ball.

Do you not see that this game is basically no different than the game against Norfolk State? It's a scrimmage out there. Why wouldn't you try giving Laviano the confidence to pass in a game like this? Rutgers has already proven they can run through Kansas. What benefit comes from running every play from here on out?

The sad thing is that we have some of the best wide receivers we've had in a long time... and we don't use them.

It's the coaching. Scared football like FLood first season.

Syracuse has a third string true freshman who is allowed to throw the ball.

Well they are certainly doing a comprehensive job of cataloging all of the things that Laviano is incapable of doing.

...and yet this is somehow acceptable to the coaching staff. What outcome are they looking for? Win 3 games? Flood is just an atrocious coach.

I agree, it actually looks like Laviano is afraid to the throw the ball down field. That is absolutely terrible and unacceptable

You have to hang in there look for receivers and not tuck it and run when your first option is covered to throw the ball down field

Not throwing down field won't cut it in conference games. There will be eight in the box all game long and render the dink and dunk pass game and run game ineffective.

Like our defense calls being more aggressive though.

I'm begging to think the short passing game is by design. CL did seem to not find the wide open deep passes but maybe he is being coached to throw the short passes? Does anyone know?

Problem with the short passing game with CL is that he sucks at firing off short passes. Short passes should be fired off with good velocity so that receivers have time to get YAC not get tackled near the LOS. His throws are slow with poor velocity leading to little to zero YAC, rendering the short passing game ineffective.

Not to mention he makes pre snap decisions off where to throw and chucks it there. He doesn't really go through progressions if his first choice is not open. Instead one of three things will happen: he'll get happy feet in the pocket, either attempt an errant throw or run for it. Not a passing threat by any measure.

We'll be eaten alive in conference play. it also doesn't help that our D can't tackle well. Some of the tackling in the Kansas game was comedy gold with 3 guys attempting to tackle a Kansas receiver and end up tackling themselves. It's like watching a 3 stooges episode. DL and OL are also pretty weak and won't hold up to conference play at all. We've seriously regressed all over the field from last year.

Agreed. Just don't understand why Rettig doesn't get a chance. I know in the past our 2nd QB wasn't a close 2nd to the starter but Rettig was reported to be almost as good as Laviano.

If you have no designs of ever passing to wide open guys for big plays, you are missing the point of football. It's to score any way possible, not to score, but to do it the hardest way.

You obviously no very little about football. Ok KU couldn't stop the rush today. How about giving future opponents other areas to game plan for? How about developing confidence in the passing game? What happens when they can't run against Michigan State, do you think this short ball control passing game is going generate enough offense and points to have a shot at keeping it competitive? Unless you have a dominate offensive line (they don't) you can't just run through good defenses. You need to keep the defense off balance and guessing with a well rounded offense that includes inside runs, outside runs, draws, screens to backs, bubble screens, jet sweeps, short passes, intermediate passes, deeper passes, bootleg runs and passes, etc. The more multi-dimensional your offense can be the more the defense has to game plan and be concern with, increases your chances of success.
