Chuck Long on BTN Live...........

And replace him with who exactly? And don't give me "this guy because he can run." You can't expect to win with a run only QB. Michigan will just stack the box and force them to throw. See how Allen fared against New Mexico. And that was New Mexico, Michigan is whole different monster. They need to get CL's confidence going early with some easy throws and open it up from there.

Then run your offense the whole game, throw on first down, throw on 2nd and short, don't worry about turnovers.
Two runs and throw into the turf will not give CL a chance

If the offense is not moving the ball and the game is getting out of reach, I wouldn't play it to keep the score close. Put someone else in and run the offense you want to run in the future. See what the other guys can do. It doesn't matter if we lose by 30 or 45, and you may learn something.

If it is not working but the game is still close, do whatever the coaches feel gives us the best chance of pulling off the upset.

I feel like this was a similar argument to getting a new coach. "We can't fire flood because there's no one better or with enough experience. " just try someone new in a real time game. Worst case scenario we lose by 50 again...

What exactly do you think is happening already? Washington, New Mexico, Iowa and Ohio St. all stacked the box. No one fears Laviano beating them with the pass nor his feet. They've been giving him easy throws and he's tanking them. Doesn't get much easier than a screen pass and he drills those into the ground.

He's really an enigma. He'll show toughness on run plays taking on tacklers, but when he's back to pass he won't stand in there and take the hit head on. He throws off his back foot while falling back to brace for the hit. He rushes his throws to avoid the hit or bails the pocket and begins his chicken dance, instead of stepping up in it. It's truly mind boggling and has to be mental.

Mich is probably planning on concentrating on stopping our 33yds in the air....

Chuck is not at practice, how would he know? LOL
If Chuck was at practice he would hype Laviano as the starting QB. Just like Ash and Mehringer. Apprarently Chris lights it up in practice. It's the real games where he screws up. That's what you, I, and Chuck see.

Unfortunately the remaining QBs don't shine in practice either. I think we're in a real bad situation at QB .... only the most important position on the field.

Or were you being sarcastic?

I think the fans would rather that we take our chances on one of the backups instead of repeating the same thing over and over.

Must be really frustrating for the coaches. CL makes some good reads and checks at the LOS. He just seems to panic when he gets into the pocket, even with no great pressure.

The other QBs have not been able to make those reads and checks at the LOS (I guess).

Ash inherited this mess, but if he isn't careful he will lose the fan base. It just might be better to get the future QB more game reps even if it hurts our chance of winning the games this year. It's not like we are winning as it is.

Lets see if CL is pulled quickly.
The way every game so far has played out,Ash looks like he doesn't trust any of the back-ups and giving Oden playing some just for the experience.
I look for Laviano to play most of the game n no matter how he looks and Oden coming in for a few series , but not a replacement.

Personally I'd start Zach or Gio to see if they can do better than Chris, but I'm not the HC and must go by his decision unless I want to claim Ash doesn't know what he's doing.
That I refuse to do, Ash knows why CL is playing and why he doesn't think any back-up can do better.
If he thinks a back up could do better, he would be stupid not to put him in.
Oden might be the exception to that because Ash might feel he isn't physically
prepaired to take the pounding he would be taking if he was the starter.

Suppose we're ahead; Do we not throw because that would stop the clock. Run up the middle and punt. Must be some other options available. Looks bad even if we're ahead.

Doubtless the coaches have a plan. Their starting qb was probably never very likely to survive in the new system anyway but they didn't have a backup who would fit into the new system who was ready to play--so they have been kind of stuck in limbo, in a transitional period, forced to use last year's starter despite immense frustration but also giving him a chance in the new system. I suspect that period might linger for a few more games. It's kind of silly for people to second guess them as if they aren't aware of the problems.

I would go Laviano first quarter. If we don't score Gio the 2nd and Oden the 3rd. 4th to Go or Oden, whoever did better. But whoever, please spread the field with 4 WR's wide.

I wonder if there's any riff between the offensive and defensive units? Not that either has been good except for the Iowa game, the defense played well, and the offense crapped the bed. At some point, the offense needs to keep the defense off the field, and put up a score or two. Something to give the defense a reason to keep going out there and putting it all on the line. Yes, they should do that anyway, but lets be real,on either side of the ball, when one unit doesn't hold up it's side, it can and will create tension between them.

Start Rettig. (please don't bother responding and telling me how dumb I am because 3 coaching staffs have let him get splinters on the bench). We've seen him in action and the kid can play. How Ash can keep trotting the worst QB n college football out there game after game is beyond my imagination.

This is what I've been thinking. We need to put the ball in Laviano's hands this game (and should have last week). Chances of a victory are small, so why stay conservative? To only lose by 58?

Give them reps running the offense Mehringer/Ash want. They will either:
  1. Fail miserably and lose a game that we had zero chance of winning with conservative O
  2. Give the coaches a better view of what can and doesn't work.
  3. Shock the world
Anyway you look at it, the team will gain experience that will be useful later. (Unless we just plan on beating the seemingly winnable games with a run-run-blown up screen-punt strategy).

It's mind boggling that Rettig won't even be given a chance ...not one frick'n series. Unreal.

Someday we'll get our own Chuck Long that could turn Chris Ash into our Hayden Fry.

Press defense has been a problem all year says Ash--no running lanes as the D is stacked.

hmmmm... is our current qb the right one to address that primary problem?

Ok so this is how our offense works

Since we spread out everyone, have no fullback, and in some cases no tight end, we have to rely on zone reads and options. But because CL is not a good runner, we really have one option and the opposing team knows this. Now if you say lets throw it thats fine, it will change our offense to more of an air raid but ok, The issue is CL can't make the throws as well, so basically we are stuck with an offense that will score once every other game in B1G play.

Unless you bring in another QB that gives us more options.
