Consider that a minimum salary for a rookie in the NBA this year is $953K and for a year 1 player is $1.53M, and then consider the following NIL contracts:

Point being, if the NIL $ is there for Cliff next year, why not play in '24-'25 with Bailey, [Harper] and crew .

We should do everything we can to get Cliff to come back next year if that’s a possibility. Seems like he is the type of person who would see value in doing something truly special at RU. His experience in the post would be huge for us as we’re blending in the new talent.

People need to recognize the opportunity cost of staying ANOTHER year in college.

While you are right and he may be able to make more in a single year of college he is further hurting his pro chances (NBA/G-league specifically)

Less and less teams are going to want to develop a player that is 23/24 years old if you have a 18/19 year you can take a shot on.

As Cliff stated he wants to chase his dream. My dream is a 5 year with the ‘24 class but if he does decide to stay I will not come down to money and would make sense.

The comparison is actually even more swayed towards college since Clif is highly likely to be on a G-League contract (2-way at best really).

2 way is approx $500k and regular G-League is approx $50k (vague recollection).

However the student visa is the real issue.

Kofi is a tragic story.
He declared for the NBA 3 times - begging to get drafted. Every year he was project as likely undrafted.
Finally stayed in after his junior year.

Went undrafted and ended up playing in Japan and then Korea this past year.

Kofi is a cautionary tale for Clif.
The grass isn't always greener.

NBA centers aren’t made in Kofis mold anymore. It much more suits Cliffs athletic above the rim and ability to run the court. I think Cliff has more to work on but I don’t blame the kid one bit if he enters after this year. Sure he might play on the best team he’s been with by staying but realistically his game isn’t going to personally develop a ton more after another year. Let’s enjoy this year and hope Cliff dominates which means we’d be dancing.

I know the OP’s heart is in the right place, but there are lots of problems with what you are suggesting for both Cliff and the team.

-The people you highlight for NIL are largely celebrities in their own right, which avails them to a different level of NIL, more in keeping with the original intent, lots of big brands want these athletes to endorse their products. Cliff in not in that situation, at least not for national brands.

-Wolf will be entering year 3 and will be expecting a bigger role, and Lathan Sommerville as a 4 star recruit is going to expect to play minutes immediately. And that doesn’t even take into account that we will still have Ogbole. They could all leave if Cliff comes back.

-Assuming Dylan comes, he and Ace will be playing a lot of two man game, with both taking a lot of shots. Cliff would become a distant third option on offense, hard to see how that helps his development or pro prospects.

-If Cliff stays, he would be almost 24 when he would be looking for his first professional opportunity. The professional interest in a player of that age will be extremely low. He would basically be older than all but a few foreign players who were already professionals overseas when they got drafted. I am not convinced he can get to NBA/G league next year with the flaws in his game, but he would be better served going to a major league like the Euroleague to develop his game. Waiting another year runs the risk that all major leagues lose interest and he ends up somewhere like Kazakhstan, with a hard road to get to any major league.

Staying in college would have not helped him become a professional. Going overseas may not be ideal, but he then has an opportunity to work on his game 24/7 and could have a road back to the NBA or the Euroleague in the future. Staying in college just pushes off development for a year, and the level of league interested in him could also be much lower.

Cliff is going to have a monster year. The faster pace benefits him bc he can run the floor and beat other bigs down the court for transition dunks and put backs.

Faster quicker guards who can penetrate will help for dump off dunks, lobs, and put backs

Better outside shooting will open up the lanes. More 3's mean more long rebounds that can lead to offensive boards

I fully expect Cliff to thrive next season

Seems like Ron made some really significant improvements in 1 year in the G league.

If i were a betting man Cliff plays college basketball in the 2024-25. I would think it is with a school that finds a way to get him paid.

I think we can all agree that classes and school work just get in the way of all the important stuff.
That’s part of it, but the two biggest factors are:

-Coaches in college are limited in the amount of time they can spend and work with players.

-In college, the coaches are treating the players with kid gloves, and are basically telling them they are great so they stay engaged and don’t want to leave. In the pros, fringe players get tough love, and told in no uncertain terms what all flaws are in their games, and what they need to do and how hard they need to work to ever see the court. You find out quickly what kind of character young players have, and whether they have it in them to do the work.

And Kofi had a lot more offensive ability than Cliff.

Why is playing professionally in Japan and Korea a cautionary tale?
Making hundreds of thousands of dollars playing basketball in Japan/Korea as a 20-something-year-old sounds amazing.

I think everyone here has fond memories of their college years and believes that college experience must be superior to playing pro basketball anywhere but the NBA. That's a bad assumption.

Sure, there are guys playing in Europe that don't make crap, play in places that are not nice for Americans to live, etc. Kofi playing in a top league in Japan or Korea is NOT that.

I would happily trade my job to play basketball, anywhere.

But the only thing about basketball that I’m good at is watching it being played by others, while I sit on a barstool.

Where are those NIL numbers coming from? Until you see them authenticated somewhere reliable,I wouldn't trust they are real, i.e, those players got those numbers.

The NIL money info is out there. Caleb Williams said this past week he makes enough NIL money that he’ll stay in school if he doesn’t like where he could be drafted. We already know about the LSU gymnastic and the LSU basketball player. There’s a lot of out there on them. Deion’s son and the Hunter kid openly talk about NIL. So does Deion. Heck, Deion’s kid is driving a Rolls Royce — even Tom Brady discussed it. There are also stories out there about LeBron’s kid.

Granted, all of these stories could be fiction, but I doubt it. These kids are effectively social influencers who play sports. I think these numbers are probably pretty accurate.

A little off topic - also saw the Caleb Williams stuff.

If he actually thinks that, then hes incredibly short sighted and I'd be wary of drafting him as a potential franchise QB.

Sure, maybe for 1 year he gets more in college. But then he delays getting his potentially huge 2nd contract by a year.

That's a key - look at their social media following - the big bucks in NIL are typically going to social media influencers who are also athletes.

Any rumors of 6 or 7 figures to athletes without much of a social media following - I'd take with a grain of salt unless there are some known extenuating circumstances (school with big NIL donor).

Thought Cliff could not receive NIL $ while in the US?

Can teams host a game or exhibition in Canada to let kids collect NIL?

That's why I'm wondering if we can schedule a charitable game or play in a seasonal tournament in Toronto for sometime like this.

Some school, venue, team or tournament could make a killing by hosting games in Canada (exhibition or just holiday tournament) and invite all the schools with players on student visa who can't get normal NIL.

Lets get it done: TKR Classic in Canada

There is an article I’ve linked a few times on Adama Sanogo traveling off shore to do som NIL work. Like he was gone for a day or two. So it’s not like the whole team has to go

he would be a completely different player with Dylan & Ace running the show.
more play in open space, fast breaks, & dunks
