"Coach broke his phone with a hammer...."

My advice on phones/social media for the players.

First.. don't look. But if you do look.. TAKE the constructive criticism to heart.. see if there is something to learn there.. ask a coach to evaluate it if think there might be something useful revealed.

EVERYTHING ELSE... the blowing sunshine up your butt or throwing the rotten fruit at you... IGNORE IT.. FORGET IT. It has zero value.

OH.. I think Pike smashing the phone was about waiting for a call from the selection committee.. worrying about that... not about social media. But thinking now.. that did not make sense.. they see the selection on TV.

I hope they don’t try to learn anything from us message board geniuses. Trust Pike to coach the team. Not kyk

Hello Rutgers message board, message on line one...

I really hate the way some of our fans talk about our players. I've heard all manner of rationalizations made by the supposed adults who post insulting crap about players. But there is no valid excuse for anybody, especially a fan, to insult a player that's having a bad game. It's childish, classless, pure asshole behavior.

Ignore the phones yes. But even if looking, they should largely ignore everything that isn't supportive.

They should focus on informed constructive criticism (i.e. primarily from the coaching staff plus maybe a little bit from teammates ) and ignore everybody else. Because (a) uninformed constructive criticism is based on incomplete and quite likely incorrect information - the garbage in, garbage out principle applies, and (b) at some point, too much constructive criticism ceases to be constructive and becomes counterproductive.

Anything a fan can accurately observe will be observed more accurately by the coaching staff or teammates. And those people know, far better than any fan could possibly know, if a specific bit of criticism should be stated or, as is often the case, go unstated.

At best, fan-oriented criticism will be totally redundant.

I 1000% agree with this take.
People on message boards , social media or even in the stands - calling players out. Even if professional. 95% of you , including myself , have never dedicated yourself so much to something as much as these players do. Especially the ones we have in our program. They sacrifice a lot (and get a lot) but nobody wants it more than them.

Pike did not seem too pleased with the hammering of the cell phone incident getting out to the media. In the post game interview session, he is unaware of how it got out. By now I’m sure he’s aware of Derek’s mention. I’m sure he will excuse Derek haha.
Then at the end of the interview when asked how he kept the team relaxed (or something along those lines), he responded “by smashing cell phones” which was quite funny.
