Thought it might be fun and interesting to talk about the D and O and see how it applied to OSU, and NU tonight. On offense, regardless of the particular sets that the team runs, whether it's the high screen, a weave, or something else, it seems to me that coach wants the team to use as much of the clock as possible and start looking for a shot with 8-10 seconds left. His rationale is that kids don't like to play defense, or they're not coached to play D that long, so if you force them to play D deep into the shot clock, the D will break down. When RU is on D, when not playing man (which they do very well by going through screens or switching and recovering) they use a 2-3 zone as they did so effectively against OSU (bad coaching by Matta as his kids didn't attack it properly), and they use a imo 3/4, or maybe it's 1/2, court press. This press has been really effective throughout the whole season as Coach trains them to use quick hands and jump the lane. These are just my impressions. I have not been to any clinics that Coach was at, nor have I read any articles that he's written. If anyone is more knowledgeable about BB in general or Coach's philosophy in particular, I'd be interested to read your take on it.

I agree -
On the defensive side notice that there is an easy press by the guards slowing down ball to transition over the mid court line.
Some one pointed out that this was to wear down the opposing guards over the course of the game. However, there is a secondary effect of shortening the offensive possession on the 30 second clock.

This along with the offensive scheme shortens the game and keeps the scores in 60's. Plays to/overcomes our weakness of offensive challenges.

Other than a game or two this season, you'll notice very few fast break points against us. That's a testament to the team's hustle and the coaching staff's ability to get the team to buy into tough defense and rebounding. It's really amazing, since when a team crashes the boards and doesn't get the rebound, it's so easy to make the outlet pass and run a fast break. Great hustle to not allow that to happen frequently.

That's right on the press effect. The other team has about 12-15 seconds left to run their offense and that's out of most teams' comfort zones.
