Savino might be the next Bearcat MBB HC

If that happened, a good portion of the Cincy fanbase would go nuts...and not in a good way.

I'm not saying it is a bad move for the school. Just been following some message board threads and talking to someone whose wife is a Cincy alumn and active in some Bearcat Club.

Cronin wasn't Plan A, B, C, D, E, or F. They had to go far far down on their list to get someone willing to come there.

I don't think that is accurate. IIRC he was Plan C (to use your nomenclature).

Calipari decided to stay at UK. Dixon and Cronin's name came up at the same time. The Dixon fiasco dragged on and Cronin backed away. Then after UCLA wouldn't pay Dixon's buyout and Barnes said no. UCLA circled back to Cronin and I think Cronin got more money out of UCLA in the process.

Cronin is a very good coach, but strange hire for UCLA. They canned a very successful Ben Howland (3 Final 4's, including 1 championship game) because he played a boring brand of defense-first basketball. Cronin is largely in the same mold.

They canned him for more reasons than that. Lots of reports of drug use, preferential player treatment, poor team chemistry, a damn near player revolt. There were a lot of moving parts, all connected to one player Howland brought on and, who Howland has said in interviews, he handled the player poorly.

What you just said surprises me, I don't go to other school's message boards very often and really don't have the lay of the land when thinking about who their fans would want to replace a successful ( or failure) HC that just left.
I just thought the Bearcat fans might like the idea of Savino continuing the type of program Cronin had there and though Darren was a big part of the success Cronin had as the Bearcat HC.

I don't sense that the Cincinnati fanbase doesn't like Savino. I think it's more that they would rather have and up-tempo offense like they had when Huggins was the coach. And since Savino was with Cronin for so long they're probably assuming he would just be a continuation of Cronin.

True. I remember reading that. But, I also recall
Bill Walton and others saying that ultimately Howland’s boring style of play hurt attendance and was a big factor in his dismissal.

In a weird twist, Doc Sadler, Head Coach at Southern Miss, is expected to join the Nebraska staff as an assistant coach. He was with Hoiberg at ISU as an assistant after he was fired from the head coaching job at Nebraska (2006-2012)

I was referring to his having his first winning season as the Southern Miss HC and instead of coming back, leaving for an assistant position at Nebraska.

Seems like his turning a corner after being hamstrung by NCAA sanctions from violations that occurred before he was hired and left after the three years probation and the two-year postseason ban ended, along with the recruiting restrictions placed on Southern Miss were over would be a good reason to stay and help his career more than leaving to be Hoiberg's assistant at Nebraska would help.

I guess he said he doesn’t want to be a head coach any longer. Kinda weird.

Maybe he feels the hassle of being a HC isn't worth it , but being a coach is something he enjoys.

Some people aren't cut out to be the boss ( even if they can do the job) , but are the type that helps make the boss successful and because of that are the type any good boss would want on their staff.

I have to feel Doc knows what is best for him and not knock his decision.

If the things I'm hearing coming out of South Carolina or true, I don't blame Frank Martin one bit if he goes to Cincinnati.

Martin hasn't set the world on fire in his 7 years as the Gamecock HC and leavening on his own to Cincinnati might be preferable to being kicked out the door having to look for a job.
He was 33-32 his last 2 seasons and 129-106 for the 7 years he's been there.

Most Cincinnati fans aren't thrilled with the prospect of Frank Martin. He, like Mick, is cut from the Bob Huggins tree. Same style of defense-first teams, struggles offensively. He's also not a great recruiter and, to your point, hasn't set the world on fire at SC but for his final four run. I think the fans are leaning more toward an up and comer which has been the formula generally with football and basketball.

I haven't seen many recent South Carolina games but Martin always struck me as a ticking time bomb with his courtside demeanor. Cincy might be doing USC a favor.
