Daily Countdown to First Game Featuring Player Jerseys---0 Days!!!!!

Have to do some research on this one. I came up with Saquan Hampton in 2014, but I don't remember him being #9 for some reason. That's what it says on the RU website.

Got any #9's? I throw a flag on this one. Love Korsak, but C'mon, 94?

@RUPete

#9 quarterback Francis "Fannie" Scarr (1915)

The November 22, 1918 Daily Home News reported that its 1915-17 player, Francis H. “Fannie” Scarr, a captain with the 136th Machine Gun Battalion, was injured and taken to an English hospital. Scarr lost his brother James on June 6th at Chateau Thierry. Almost a year later, the November 4, 1919 Targum reported, “As a senior he captained the team and was declared ‘Best Soldier’ in his class.” He was sent to Fort Myer after graduation and won a promotion in the infantry.

“Just before the Armistice was signed, Captain Scarr was badly wounded in the jaw and was invalided home. Since then he has been taking treatment for that wound and was finally discharged less than two weeks ago. Meanwhile, he has assisted in the coaching of the Rutgers football men and at the same time took charge of similar work at his other alma mater, Hasbrouck Heights High.” He was presented the Croix de Guerre and it was also announced that he and Mildred Cronk would be only the second couple to be married at Kirkpatrick Chapel.

We need an 8!
Tres Moses! Kordell Young too, although his career was derailed by injuries, he always hung in there to contribute as best he could. Going through the rosters, I saw that Tyshon Fogg was #8 too, I'll leave it to Source to go way back though!

We need an 8!
The November 8, 1924 Daily Home News listed the uniform numbers of the team. The Rutgers Hall of Famers among the numbers were: #3, left tackle David T. Bender; #21, quarterback Charles Hoyt “Bus” Terrill; #8, fullback Homer H. Hazel; and #4, right halfback Henry “Heinie” Benkert. The September 28, 1928 edition listed Jack Grossman as #10.

I think Homer Hazell has to be the guy.

Well I guess using #1 Toure is a no go. This sucks. If Gods a college football fan he sure as sh*t isn't a Rutgers fan.

Yeah that does really suck. For us but more for him. Really thought he was poised for a huge year to position himself for the NFL.

I never saw this Hazell fella play. Any good? 4 or 5 star today? What would his NIL haul be? 😁
Pretty much as large a haul as he wanted.

Homer Hazel earned his football letter in 1916 but had to leave school for lack of funds. He returned to win All American honors in 1923 as an end and 1924 as a fullback, “Top memory of all, perhaps, concerns a bitter midwinter night when between the halves of a game a cheerleader ran into the center of the (Ballantine Gym) floor and after begging silence announced in proud ringing tones that Homer Hazel, the great and legendary Hazel, had just been picked as an All-American. Just as the announcement was concluded, Hazel himself, then on the basketball squad, returned to the floor with the team. The ovation that kept the huge blushing Hazel on his feet for 10 minutes still stands as the most impressive of collegiate memories, then or now,” wrote sportswriter John McDonald in the March 16, 1938 Targum.

The December 30, 1924 Daily Home News reported Homer Hazel was named first team All-American as a fullback but was also called the “best kicker/punter of all.” Henry “Heinie” Benkert received honorable mention on Camp’s team.

According to the College Football Hall of Fame as of 2017, “…of the 5.19 million people who have played college football since Princeton first took on Rutgers in 1869, only 987 players have earned induction into the hall of fame.” Homer Hazel was the first college player selected at two positions – as an end in 1923 and a back in 1924 in the inaugural College Football Hall of Fame class of 1951.

I was going to go Scott Erney for 7. Honorable mention to Tiquan Underwood and Tom Savage (what could have been!) for his UConn play. Can’t disagree with 6 at all.

Good choice! Can’t think of too many 4s or 3s. I have a couple ones in mind for 2.

Today is game day. Zero days. In honor, we give you some players who wore zero. This is not a hall of fame, this is players who made a positive impact in one way or another or who we expect to have an impact--If you don't like these choices, don't be a zero and complain, be a HERO and post yours!!! Happy Game Day!!!!

Christian Izien!!!

Greg Schiano 2.0's first QB. He gutted out some tough years getting Rutgers back on track---Noah Vedral.
