Sure, we currently suck at FTs, but I am so proud of how hard the entire team plays and competes for 40 minutes.

And we rebound the sh*t out of the ball on both ends.

Would love to play with guys that go balls out like that.

Pike has clearly shown he can coach. He just needs to bring some guys in. We came out hard verse Iowa, Northwestern, IU, Nebby, and Maryland. Obviously only winning 1 game is not what I want, but a coach can only do so much. Get some shooters and a B1G low post threat.

I think a couple of those refs had Maryland-9.. not the reason we lost.. but some of those late calls and no-calls were egregious

On the OP topic.. the fight.. the effort.. just looking like they are playing ORGANIZED basketball at times.. all stuff we were missing in the last few years.

Beyond frustrating tonight, and now the last 2 road games against Indiana and Maryland we cannot hit foul shots , our entire team, and continue to turn over the ball which makes the fabulous effort on defense and on the glass , go to waste. We have let our bad foul shooting affect our normal shooting leading to some of the lowest %'s of the year. The continued failure by our bigs to use the glass, a simple bank shot, would have gone a long way tonight with 22 offense boards. You get 22 offensive rebounds you will likely win the game but our failure to convert the put backs or convert the foul shots when fouled, makes it so damn frustrating!

As bad as the shooting, the foul shots, and the turnovers were, the defense and rebounding were outstanding except for 4-5 key possessions where we let our guard down or one of our player's lost his man. At the end of the half , Maryland hit 2 threes, 1 by their power forward Gill who was on the corner and Diallo could not get out in time and the second was when Corey lost Melo who hit the 3 . We are down 34-29 at the half instead of up 1. In the second half , when Maryland hit their spurt, Laurent lost Heurter their 3 point scorer for 2 open threes and Corey lost Brantley in the corner and could not get out in time. Those 5 possessions cost us 15 points and all 5 made 3's were wide open . They were 8-20 from 3, and were contested on their other threes but those 5 was one of the reasons for the loss.

The team never quits, tries real hard, is relentless , you never feel they are out of it or will get blown out, making them one of easiest teams to root for that have ever played On The Banks.Just feel bad they cannot do a little more to help themselves , hit some foul shots, hit a few more threes, make a few less turnovers ,things that you would think can occur but just does not happen. They deserve better.

I agree on the run outs to cover the 3.
That, and the FTs.

I don't know the #s, but we seem to be taking much better care of the ball overall. Still a little to clean up there, but not too bad.

15 more turnovers tonight. If we cut it to 10, that are 5 more possessions and potential points. Since Indiana , we have stopped the pick 6 turnovers and Nigel had one but got back to knock it off Melo's leg.

I was with a few friends tonight who went to other B1G schools. They all are amazed at how much better we play now under Pikes. Yes, they realize we can't shoot, but to a man they're like "at least we can watch your games this year and take chances betting on you guys."

Totally agree and that's what good coaching does. We now need to add shooters in the equation, who can consistently shoot 38-40% beyond the three-point line. That keeps the defense more honest and forces them to play out on our shooters, which should open the lanes more for dribble-drives and back-screens to our front court.

EVERYONE indeed played hard on D...and repped well overall

The effort is light years ahead from what it was.

Mike Williams gives so much effort but right now can't buy a basket. We really need him to find his stroke again.

Foul shooting, enough said, terrible. Doorson was our best FT last night. No excuse for our guards missing so many.

Inexperience still showing at times

Maryland coaching staff implemented a game plan on Corey to overplay his right hand, and it really worked in the second half, frustrating Corey.

Coach Pikiel and staff can coach.

There are 4 "2nd matchups"......Northwestern, who is red hot and looking like a NCAA team......Maryland later in year at RAC......Iowa in a week or so and Saturday vs Wisconsin,

Wisconsin is clicking right now and dismantled Penn State after a close 1st half.....It will be interesting to see how they adjust to Corey, who didn't play the first 10 minutes of the first matchup and how we adjust to Wisconsin playing and shooting better. This was also the game where Corey turned his ankle late, so I'd got to expect a better shooting performance.

Crazy things can happen when your effort on defense is this high and focused....at least we had one earlier game at MSG vs Fordham, so it won't be a new concept. I think we give them a decent game.

This staff and scouting is really as good if not better in conference vs OOC, Jay Young and the assistants are prepared and it shows on the defensive end.

Yes, FT's folks....we'll get better....I think it's a matter of confidence, they are in a rut right now, even layups are sometimes misses from Sa or Freeman....as they go, so does the rest of the team....need the Front Court to not turn it over and make some close shots to give the team a boost.

The total lack of production from this supporting cast continues to amaze. To me, Sa is the worst offender. I had high hopes for him, but right now he looks like a complete miss that cannot play at this level. He should find a seat on the bench next to Thiam, and he and the team should strongly consider his options for next year.

Can't have the opponent shoot better from 3 than you shot at the foul line and expect to win much.

I am certain the staff is pulling their hair out on this but ultimately you can't play with 3 guys on the floor who can't score.

Just need better players.

At some point you have to put some blame in the offensive woes at the 2 guards with the ball in their hands the most. Our forwards and centers seem to have better vision and passing than our guards. Having our guards beat their man off the dribble going right only to be met by a big waiting to block a shot is pretty simple to defend.

As bad as our FT shooting has been, I can't believe how many layups/put backs we've missed this season. Hit half of those and we may not be as bummed about the FT's.

There was a lot of good to take away from last night, we do not need to harp on the FTs we all get what 6-8 more made would have meant for the game, the difference between a real close game and maybe a win. However despite that this team shows Knight and Day improvement from previous staffs. Their desire and relentless effort to keep fighting, keep grinding as evidence by late in the 2nd half having 2nd 3rd and 4th chance opportunities off hustle plays shows me why this team is going to only get better.

Besides the intensity on the defense and the glass, one bright spot has to be how Nigel played last night. He had been in a funk and started to come out of it in the 2nd half against Nebraska with some important shots, but carried it over to tonight which included a few triples. If he can start to gain that confidence back on his jumpshot and 3s, that will help expand the defense and make the other team guard the perimeter a little more and give Corey more room to work. Also have to love the effort Freeman gives night in and night out, but for god sakes stop trying to take a pass from 6ft out and try to come strong to the hoop and throw it down, it does not work. Also would like to see him try to make one or two max moves and if he doesn't have it reset, a few times he brings the ball back down and has it swatted out for a turnover.

Overall as everyone has said Pike's and staff can coach, the team has bought in, and they are much better brand to watch and root for and that is way more than we can say the past few seasons on the banks. Pikes will have this team dancing in a few years if he can bring in a few shooters and better post play.

I agree, RU is better coached and they work harder.

However, the talent on RU is still atrocious. Can't miss free throws and throw that many passes out of bounds. RU literally needs one good class and they'll be middle of the pack in B1G.

Williams disappearance on Offense is a real head-scratcher. Ever since being named captain his shooting has tanked. even so, he plays with great energy and does almost everything else better than most of his teammates. If he can get his shot back it would be a real difference maker.

I'm hoping there will be a game in which Sanders, Johnson and Williams all play well. We will win that game, regardless of who the opponent is. I'm hoping that game is Saturday at MSG or at Purdue. [winking]

Yes,the guards should be doing a better job but who are they going to pass the ball to in the corners to make a 3 point shot? The opponent knows the answer is no one and that is why Sanders and Johnson have such difficulty driving to the basket.

Who was Dodd covering when Corey drove right and was met by him. That person had to be open.

When Trimble or Cowan beat our guys off the dribble they were looking to pass. yes we can't shoot, but we weren't getting wide open looks from 3. When a guard like Sanders can get to the paint with ease we have to get more done. In the 2nd half it was almost as if Turgeon wanted Sanders to drive to the basket.

I still cant fathom how easy some of the missed shots appear to be. :chairshot::chairshot:
And
Williams has been open...theyve stopped even bothering to contest his "3's"
shooting 17% the last 5 games when he was lights out in high school....WTF???
and
for that matter Corey disappeared on O in the 2nd half..

If we had even ONE gutsy Pikiel choice player that hits 12pts and 5 REBs consistently
that would OUT produce our entire(I call em) "Magnificent Seven"
we could concievably have 3 more wins[cheers]

I think Coach P WILL find some good ones....
but I think MOST of us are just a tad frustrated

They play as hard as any team you'll watch. Our defense had gotten so much better. We just need to add a few shooters to the mix and get better at the line. Our rebounding is intense

Freeman MUST keep driving. Sure he'll get some blocked, but he's also drawing fouls. And with our relentless activity on the glass we're getting those blocks and rebounds...and often drawing fouls. Look at how quickly we've been getting into the bonus, how much foul trouble they've gotten into. When that happens, they can't be that aggressive on interior D. That'll help out our guards/wings driving.

Besides, who do you want to pass it to? It's been pretty well chronicled here the futility of us shooting from the outside.
