DePaul 1 shot from beating Villanova, Nebraska beats Indiana

Actually they were one shot from tying Villanova.

I know this is a nitpick and would not have brought it up, except that you requested discussion.
Haha yeah was watching both games and posted this thread when DePaul was down 1 but it was clear they would lose without a miracle. Then they actually got a great look to tie it.

What I just posted in the other thread, our team:
-11 wins
-On the road down single digits to (receiving votes) Miami late in second half (including big comeback)
-On the road up big at half, close game late to (receiving votes) SHU
-On the road down single digits with 7+ mins on the clock to B1G-favorite #14 Wisconsin

Our losses we were in the game or made big comebacks each time, and they were all on the road to very good teams. Our big road win now was against a team that just a short time later almost took down #1 on the road. That with the Indiana result - any team is beatable, and our team is not as bad as some might think.

Got to bring it every game. A week from today the Knights play the worst MSU team I've seen since Izzos first year with the squad on the road. Rutgers will have a good chance to win that game!

Considering that this team is really a patch job, it is doing damn well. With the bench, we do have some fouls to give in keeping a tight defense going, but our shot selection is just woeful. We need a player or two to get hot if we hope to win the games we think we can in the BIG.

DePaul and Nebraska matched baskets with Villanova and Indiana to the last play of the game.Against Miami, Seton Hall and Wisconsin Rutgers simply couldn't sustain offensive execution for 40 minutes and the result was double digit losses.

Depaul played well and Villanova helped them with an above average number of turnovers and below average FT shooting. The Nova will have their hands full at Creighton on Saturday.

We can defend. That's the half of the equation we possess in order to pull off the big upset. Are we consistent enough on the offensive end? Not yet. Feels like we're getting closer though.

100%...you need that pristine shot selection or someone who can take someone off the dribble consistently to finish. Can't go for big 2-5 min stretches where we are heaving up poor shots.

Yeah, unfortunately, this is the way I see it. Our defense will keep us within reach in most games, but we just don't have enough offense to win most B1G games.

True, but if Myles Bridges comes back from his ankle sprain, we're in worse shape. He hasn't played in five straight games. He's Izzo's frosh superstar.

Against the Gophers they played 4 guards almost the whole game. Going to have to punish them on the boards!

Michigan State's young players did well against Minnesota. Its full of young talent. If they show up to play, Rutgers just doesnt have enough to match them. Young teams are up and down, you can hope that they are down but based on talent alone, MSU is a prohibitive fave in that game and I expect them to go dancing this year.

What's to discuss? Conference games. Teams know each other. Teams play well one night and not the next.

As many teams have learned, when you have a really good team in a position to get beat, you better do it because there's very little chance you will get the same level of emotion and the same kind of game next time. So often you lose by a couple to a really good team, then get blown out by some non-entity next time out.

It happens.

good point..one thing is that conference play can be unpredictable yet very predictable especially early on and you are right, if you are the underdog and you find yourself in position to win at the end of the game, you better do it because more often than not you will end uprepeating those type of losses

And a strong home court advantage goes a long way to increases those upset odds. With a sold out, rocking RAC, we have a shot in all B1G games imo

Although I agree offensive execution has gotten worse this season, the bigger problem to me is the unforced turnovers. We seem to be in the 14-19 range which is totally unacceptable. First, it leads to opponents run outs and points off turnovers, Second, it doesn't allow us to even get a shot on the possession or to get fouled further reducing our offensive numbers, and Third, we cannot crash the offensive boards when we do not vent get a shot up. We got 15 offensive rebounds against Wisconsin and shot in the 30's and the number would have been higher without the turnovers .

Wisconsin is a team you do not want to turn the ball over in transition. I think the team was forcing things against a much better opponent. I will give them a pass for that game and they did do a better job in the 2nd half of not turning it over until later. I think Corey is going to need to play smarter going forward. Its been an adjustment for him and he was progressing pretty good but the real test is with conference play

Conference games can have anything happen on a given night. We beat Wisconsin two years ago. Then we didn't win another game.

When a team is offensively challenged there is a very small margin for error in other aspects of the game such as turnovers and rebounding.

Villanova is good but they are very beatable. Villanova's had a few close calls this year by unranked opponents. Still, good for them to keep finding a way to come out on top.

Also good for DePaul to put themselves in position to beat one of the best teams in the nation.

When you play 40 minutes of good defense with lots of effort and desire...you will be in games and have wins when your offense does enough

Most upsets don't occur with scores in the 80s, usually in the 60s and occasionally low 70s

Keep playing the defense and we will have a some this year too

Fully expect Creighton to beat Nova today.
Villanova has outstanding shooters which makes them such a great team on the road. Its amazing the accomplishment of a small catholic school located in the suburbs of Philadelphia to be undefeated and ranked ranked number one in the polls after winning the national championship last season.

Agree 100% rujmm. They have experience and simply do not get rattled no matter what.
Jay Wright has done an amazing job, imo.

No I'm not a gambler-----surprised but happy they won.

Brunson kid was huge for them.

Another very impressive display by Villanova. Seven guys and very little size but they are extremely efficient. Team basketball at its best. They will lose a couple along the way and need to get Booth back to have a good chance at another deep run in the tournament.
