DePaul is a real interesting early season quiz

DP has a pg who is real good, billy Garrett, and a nice wing from nj (Cain?) . Not sure of the rest of the roster.

I watched a little bit of the game vs. Robert Morris. Being the first game couldn't gather all that much. We will see how we play on the road in a cavernous environment (3/4 empty Allstate arena).

In looking at their roster, it appears that once again we will have a distinct size advantage

DePaul is bad, right? Or at least it was very bad last year. So I'm not sure that it's interesting so much as it's fortunate. Road wins are very tough, regardless of the environment. With a seemingly bad team, as the OP mentions, the game is winnable. That's good.

Robert Morris is not a good team. They lost by 17 to Penn and then by 6 to Depaul. I think we play a good game and the size advantage is huge for us.

Rutgers 74
DePaul 61

A win would create some buzz, and 5-0 would start to get the students involved and maybe once again we can pack the RAC

I watched the whole Robert Morris Depaul game. They have one quick guard but outside of that I think crush them on the boards and inside in general. 77-61 RU

Would seem like a winnable game. It not just that RU has size. It looks like it is using it well, creating mismatches and owning the glass. I don't think we've even unleashed Sanders as a weapon yet. Win this game and there is a good chance we develop a habit of winning which we'll need when we meet a very good Miami team.

Agreed. As I posted in another thread DePaul has big talented guards, but they are small in the front court. Their biggest starter is 6'7". They didn't play either of the their 6-10 guys in their first game. One is a freshman who probably was not ready and the other is a senior who has never been a big contributor. So I agree that RU will need to exploit their lack of size in the inside game.

Last year, DePaul went 9-22.

This season , they lost all of their primary bigs from last year. One of these was their best player, forward Myke Henry (13.7 ppg, 6.2 RB, 28.9 min). They also lost a junior center who left the team (Hamilton, 8.6 pts, 5.5 RB, 24.0 min) and another senior forward in Rashaun Stimage (5.7 pts, 4.2 RB, 17.7 min), who had the 2nd most minutes at the forward spot.

They return no big man that played more than 10 min a game last year, but have several on the roster. In their first game, they turned to a JUCO forward (McCallum) who was a 3* prospect without much in the way of offers and a junior (Hanel) who averaged 8.5 min last year (0.9 pts, 0.9 reb).

Their guards are fairly tall, though... with the top 4 (in terms of minutes during their first game) each being 6-5 or 6-6.

Have a feeling Pikiell is going to look to pound the ball down low, using our size to our advantage underneath and avoiding Sanders/Johnson having to shoot from the outside against taller defenders. This would likely have been a loss mid-season last year, but I'm looking forward to a win tomorrow in Chi-town.

Edit: McCallum is a JUCO, not a true frosh.

They are apparently smaller, very good guard play, but also lack depth. This could be another game where the second half makes the difference. Go RU

One of the offshore books puts out lines a day early and they have Rutgers +3

Agree. And probably even more important to players than fan base.
Almost a "must" win which sounds crazy at game 3 with a new staff and many new players. But need to shake last years funk off with a road win against a Big East team

Rutgers mens basketball has a long history of losing most road games. This game will be a early indication of how this team performs in front of a hostile crowd.Sanders must step up his offensive performance probably against a zone defensive.

Not a must win by any means but you want to create real buzz? win this game

8 newcomers and look like they lost 2 key contributors...they have Garret but not much else and once again picked for last. The last time these two schools met Rutgers dispatched the Blue Demons fairly easily in the Big East tournament..was that the last win for Mike Rice?

The kid from Willingboro, Cain, is also very good. He shot 43% from 3 last year and was Depaul's leading scorer with 21 points in their opener. Their backcourt is a strength.

I know the season is very early, but...

Where do you think Depaul would be predicted to finish in the B1G?

At the bottom with us?
Above any other B1G teams?

Just wondering how much of a measuring stick this game will be as a precursor to B1G play.

Yes, Cain and Garrett are both very good and are pretty tall. We need to take advantage of our height and to stay out of foul trouble. I just want a W to keep our momentum going.

So they're also likely going to be missing their only listed center, 6-10 freshman Levi Cook, due to injury.

Much like we were last year, they have just one healthy player over 6-8 on the roster... but theirs is a walk-on senior 6-10 forward, Peter Ryckbosch, who didn't see any time in the opener.

I'd have to assume Ryckbosch gets pressed into action, given the height we'll have down low. Last year, he averaged 9.7 minutes per game... but also averaged a foul for every 5.2 min of playing time. I'd have to imagine he'll find himself in foul trouble trying to defend Gettys, Sa, and Freeman down low, which leaves them with a true freshman 6-8 forward as their only remaining player over 6-7.

Looking at the height disparity(ranked by minutes played so far this season):
Rutgers:
28.0 - 6-2 Sanders
24.5 - 6-1 Johnson
24.0 - 6-7 Freeman
23.0 - 6-6 Laurent
22.5 - 6-2 Williams
19.0 - 7-0 Gettys
18.5 - 6-9 Sa
15.5 - 6-9 Thiam
10.5 - 6-6 Omoruyi
8.0 - 7-0 Doorson

DePaul
31.0 - 6-5 Cyrus
30.0 - 6-7 Hanel
28.0 - 6-6 Caine
27.0 - 6-6 Garrett
26.0 - 6-5 Wood
25.0 - 6-7 McCallum
22.0 - 5-11 Docks
9.0 - 6-8 Eichelberger

Have a feeling we're going to see more of our bigs in this game, with two guys 6-9 or better on the floor together more often. Gettys/Sa, Gettys/Doorson, etc.

7 man rotation for DePaul. We go ten deep

I bet it this morning also bit bouncing around . Better # right now avail and back to 3. Bottom line is nobody knows about RU improvement so guys with money will bet against them anytime the fav laying 5 or less. Until they show otherwise.

Turnovers, turnovers turnovers. At least we're playing a half-court game now. We should be better. Fouls, fouls, fouls. Better weak-side help will cure a lot of these. Nice to have size but Pikiell has them in shape. RU 62-55.

De Paul would be picked last with us. even though its early its a great measuring stick, the program came into the season losing 40 of its last 47 games. Beating a team like De Paul or even blowing them out would right away indicate we are seeing progress already, losing to De Paul means that everyone better calm down with their enthusiam as it would indicate we still have a long way to go to be competitive with the rest of the conference

I don't know they look to be every bit as tall as us other than Gettys.

Again dominated on the glass (46-27), which was great to see... interestingly, though, Mike Williams had the most boards (9) at just 6-2.

Looking at guys who are 6-7 or taller:
Theirs (McCallum, Hanel, Eichenberger) went 4-11 with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Ours (Gettys, Freeman, Sa, Thiam, Doorson) went 7-16 with 24 points and 18 rebounds.

Our defense taking Garrett and McCallum out of the game was huge, though - which was a different story than just size.

Williams was in the right place at the right time...a lot!
