  • I watched the game today in unusual fashion...at home with friends with the sound not muted.
  • Jess Settles was the color guy. My friends and I both clearly heard the same thing...and I replayed it so we could be sure. In about the middle of the 2nd half a Rutgers guy had the ball down low and a second Indiana player dropped down to double-team him, swatted at the ball, caught him across the wrist, and was called for the foul. Settles said that he didn't agree with the call, that the ref should let the guys play, and that this was the Big Ten. Fair enough.
  • On the next series an Indiana guy had the ball and was struck in an almost identical fashion by a Rutgers defender. Settles comment was that it was clearly a foul as the Rutgers guy had struck the ball-handler across the wrist.
  • My friends were just as puzzled by the apparent inconsistency from Settles. He played at Iowa, not Indiana. Why would he make exactly the opposite comments on two successive plays at opposite ends of the court that were virtually identical ?
  • I know it had nothing to do with the game. We sucked, Indiana played well. We were not gonna win that game. But my friends....who are not really Rutgers fans...wondered just like I did what was going on with Settle's comments.

If you’re talking about the 4th foul on Morgan that sent him to the bench that was pretty weak.

There were a bunch of weak calls on Rutgers too but overall didn’t make an impact on the outcome of the game (unlike a few other games earlier in the year where we saw some other terrible calls in big situations).

Yup. While it's not a huge deal to me and had no impact on the game, I definitely noticed it. He threw some compliments our way but seemed to be rooting for Indiana. I don't usually sweat that kinda stuff, but it clearly stood out to me. And yeah, I don't know how he could say that wasn't a foul on our guy. It was very clear on the replay. Maybe he's one of the many B1G purists who don't want us in the league.

The guy even stood up to recognize Indiana's high scorer at end of game and said so. Whatever.

GO RU

Right up there with Crispin who spent the final 30 seconds of our win against Indiana at the RAC saying Indiana was going to be back and that the whole conference should root for Indiana and it’s the best interest of everyone for Indiana to be a good team. I don’t understand the hypnosis

those tv guys "sucked"--they were in love with indiana from the first minute of play and actually said they were so happy indiana was back
Surprised they weren't rooting for Indy to hit the century mark too.
They did give the RAC some compliments toward the end.

The B1G is well served by IU keeping their place in the basketball world. Not a lot of football support there, and not a huge market or an IU-only market. They become sort of a stainless steel goose if they can't stay near the top of the league. I think BTN employees know this.

That's college basketball Suzyn!!

That sort of thing happens fairly often. Everytime Rutgers fouls its because "they foul a lot".. " they want to ugly up the game".. etc. While a few of our guys make some stupid fouls.. we are not especially aggressive on either side of the court. Not like some of these commentators would have you believe.

Most fouls are committed out of over-aggression or desperation for being out of position. Anyone watching can see how hard our guys have worked at being in position, doing things the right way. But that announcer today.. one of the worst.

But that's not why we lost today... or vs PSU (though clearly the refs could have called some stuff in our final flurry in that loss).

From what I’ve seen this season, most B1G refs must see RU in the same way Settles does.

I shut the volume off within 2 minutes when Settles called Morgan, JMo, that was all I needed to hear. I knew how the broadcast was going to go from there.

I always turn the sound off when I'm watching a game at home and listen to some music.
But I had friends over who preferred watching AND listening to the game.

My first thought was that he couldn't "settle" on a firm answer. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
or maybe he is just bi-polar.

I find it amusing whenever watching BTN Live and an RU game is coming up and they have Mike DeCourcy in studio. Maybe it’s just me but Without fail if they ask him what he’s looking for in the game it will be what the other team needs to do to get a win.

Me and my son both said the color guy was biased against Rutgers. We get dissapointed whenever Stephen Bardo doesn't call a game. Love that guy!
If you watch a replay of those two plays and listen to what Settles is saying....there is no other conclusion than that he was being blatantly one-sided.
