Q: What kind of impact can Jerry Kill have big picture?

"I think it's two-fold. I think he gives them stability. I think he understands time of possession and how it impacts the defense. He understands the big picture. He is not a stats guy. He is not trying to get a head coach job, so he's not the cool guy on the sidelines that an AD would like to hire. Time of possession is going to be important. It's going to be a little more of a downhill attack then it was last year. I think he settles down the offense.

"Big picture, not only does he have head coaching experience, he has head coaching experience mostly if not entirely with rebuilt programs. He's had to take over and build a program. I think Chris can bounce things off of him. I think Jerry is a team guy. If Chris wants to ask his opinion about something, I think Jerry will be there for him and certainly help him with some of his experience."

Q: What's your sense of Ash as he begins his second season?
"I would refer to Chris as a very focused coach. He is business-like and focused. Confident. I'd say he has tunnel vision. I think most minutes of every day he is thinking, 'How can I make Rutgers football better?' He has a great demeanor. People are going to have to be patient with him.

"I think the best thing people could do for someone in Chris Ash's position is just to support him and understand this is a big task. The fewer distractions he has from outside pressures he has, the better. If he thinks he has to win right away, I think that's counterproductive. Let him build a program and get the non-conference schedule the way it should be. The facilities are getting better. He's a focused guy. Don't distract a focused guy. Let him stay on task."

Ash gets a full 5 years from this fan. He is rebuilding an entire city.

Addressing Time of Possession makes me love Kill, already. Having the offense take 30 seconds off the clock each possession last year killed us more than any other single thing.
It's the #1 reason that the former guy was just way over his head. He was a one trick pony that would continually run straight ahead into a brick wall because that was all he knew what to do.

Not mentioned today is that Lester Erb is a huge upgrade who has been helping Jerry in recruiting trips out west.

Just an aside regarding Jerry DiNardo. He's another guy that Gruninger passed on. I personally know a former coach who had ushered him into the College Ave gym for an interview. Fred wasn't too friendly toward coaches whose name ended in a vowel yet some our most succesful ones filled that criteria. DiNardo is from the same background as Marco and the Pickell brothers...St Francis Prep. If I recall correctly, Dino Mangiero was also an assistant coach on DiNardo's staff at Indiana.

Short of winning the East and playing in the Big Ten title game, there are going to be people calling for Ash's head by the end of the season. Most likely, it'll start around the second quarter of the Washington game.

If you have any sense at all for what it's going to take to make Rutgers a contender in the Big Ten, you'll tune out the histrionics (I'm a big fan of the "Ignore" button) and not feel the need to respond to every lunatic fringe crybaby who trolls the board when the points start rolling in for the bad guys.

That includes Politi.

Those people would be stupid, so who cares?

Another reason to hate Fred the Finocchio.

I would be thrilled with mediocre for this season. That does not mean I don't have higher expectations for the program, just being realistic for this season. This is a multi year rebuild.

"Cannot accept?" "Matter?" Like, how? Why does it really Matter? You're goi g a little far here. Sure, I'd like my team to win more, but an hour after the game, it doesn't really matter any more. Stop being so dramatic.

I apologize. I was lampooning the fans you mentioned in your post. But we will see similar sentiments when we lose a few games.

Are you suggesting he would have had success here? He didn't have the greatest success at Vandy or IU...places that are hard to win at.

Realistically, the number of people like that are pretty few. Yeah, they may be very vocal, but they are few. Most people are prepared for another disastrous season, but it's going to be really difficult to recruit next year if Ash & Co can't squeeze out at least 3 wins this season. That and limit blowouts to less than 50 points

Do you really see it being that bad? Squeezing out 3 wins?

Well, I do Shift, but what I said was, "at least 3 wins." Less than that and yes, the ranks of those who are calling for Ash's head (at this point, a minority) will likely grow.

Think we do better against UW and Michigan.
Michigan State is a wild card, but if that dumpster fire rages, we should do better.
The teams of concern for major blowouts are PSU and tOSU. On ESPN yesterday, they were talking about how Schiano thinks this is the best defensive line he has ever coached. With Wilson as OC, they will be formidable.

I love Coach DiNardo. I run through a brick wall for him. Rutgers missed out on a guy who wanted to be close to home. He wanted Rutgers, but there was this idiot named Fred holding back Rutgers Athletics.

His W-L record was not so great, except for 3 seasons while at LSU. 9 of 12 seasons produced losing records.

Vanderbilt: 19–25 9–22
LSU: 32–24–1 18–20–1 (last 2 seasons 6-15; 2-13)
Indiana: 8–27 3–21
Total: 59–76–1

Fred was an idiot holding back Rutgers?

Mason may have been in the mix at one time. He is a local NJ guy who coached at Colonia high school before moving on to the college ranks. It's interesting to see that he was an assistant at Ohio State before getting the head job at Minnesota. Sounds like a Schiano path to a good head coaching position. It's nice to see that some of the local announcers like DiNardo and Mason often speak well about Rutgers as they both realize the potential we hope Ash can fulfill.

I hate the type this but yeah we need to trust the process. Ash is trying to built this the correct way and built it to last. GS did the same thing before Flood ran everything to the ground and then buried it and set it on fire on his way out.

Jerry Kill is just what we needed on paper. Just having someone who actually knows what he is doing is get us some extra wins. Remember, outside of the blowouts we actually lost some close games that I really think we would had pulled off if we had a different and better OC.

Look, there will always be all kinds of trolls (other team fans pretending to be Rutgers fans to troll us), other fans from other teams who just want to kick us when we are down, and anti-fans (Rutgers fans who hate football and want it to fail but actually follow other Rutgers sports like basketball), and fake fans who are only loyal to former coaches and ADs or some other coach (see Al Golden, PJ Fleck, Flood, etc) and therefore badly want Ash to fail just so they can post a "I told you so" thread. You know,... those idiots. They love to flood gameday threads when we are losing and posts tons of troll threads during the games. Most rarely post outside of this.

You know what shuts them up and makes them run away with their tails between their legs? Winning. Nothing upsets more than winning, getting commits and building upgrades.

Mason never speaks well of Rutgers.
After we beat Michigan in 2014 he was all over Hoke for losing to us. Now that may have been fair, but he still seems to have an axe to grind against RU.

If Rutgers improves on the field, no sane person will be calling for Ash's job. He inked a very good class last year, has the makings of a decent one right now for 2018, and is literally changing the landscape around the stadium. If he even sniffs the upper part of the B1G East this year, we should have a parade for his accomplishments. If anyone needs a title game THIS year to prove Ash's worth, they need a psych checkup.

5 years to do what? If there is faith in Ash, then you should expect improvements this season. Pretty significant improvements.

Ya, this is about where I'm at. Another year like last year and I am putting Ash on the hot seat.

But I'm not saying we need to have an 8 win season. A 5 win season would look nice. A sensible next step towards where we want to go.

Is 5 wins unreasonable? I think if you have faith in the coach it is not.

He has an axe to grind against RU because he was one of the frontrunners - maybe THE frontrunner - for the HC job when Fred hired Dick.

Flood was a problem, but he did okay coaching, but his recruiting was blah and he ran a loose ship. Last year you took a even bigger step back with the offense under Mehinger. Just limiting possessions to games will make the scores look better when you lose. I think most people with a brain would see major improvement if Rutgers just finishes in 6th place in the East. Indiana is the most likely team I think that could finish behind Rutgers.

If Rutgers is competitive in most games and finishes in 6th place I'd consider that good. Just do that and recruits won't bail.

Don't act as if Maryland isn't in this conversation. Maryland's schedule isn't kind either. The home and away schedule in the B1G doesn't have Maryland easily repeating last year's record. Non conference schedule is tough. Texas at Texas in the heat is a lot to ask for early in the season. UCF is much better than when Maryland played them last year. Maryland's best chances of winning B1G games are home against Indiana and against Rutgers. Record wise I think Maryland takes a step back to maybe 3 or 4 wins.

How's your QB competition? Do you wish Perry Hills was still there?

Yeah, I know you grimaced as you typed that and I threw up in my mouth a little. The issue is not 'trust the process', but how do you know the current process is correct? The last guy was always saying everything was a process, but we know quite well he was full of @##$. What or who's to say the current process is one that is worthy of trust. Don't get me wrong - I want to believe, but there are certainly no guarantees. And Kill? Sounds like a decent fit on paper, but you know what? Fans were crowing that Mehringer was the second coming last year before the season started. They said Mehringer was a boy wonder who can out-scheme any wily old veteran because he had learned from Hermie. That he picked up our QB of the future in Oden and stopgap QB Allen to keep Laviano permanently on the bench. Who ended up being QBs? A Floodie guy and a Floodie backup guy (who was picked up because Wiegers bailed in 2012). It's just hard to let go of skepticism and that that does not make me a troll.

Don't recall any or many saying that about Mehringer or the QB competition. Your questioning Kill because of the Mehringer failure does not hold water.

What's the process?
1. Solid recruiting. So far, considering our last 2-3 years, check.
2. Solid strength and conditioning. Check.
3. Sold nutrition. Check.
4. A tireless work ethic. Check.
5. Integrity and straight shooter. Appears to be check.
6. Experienced and seasoned coaches. Check (not last year).
7. Demand for improved facilities. Check. The previous guy seemed oblivious to our facilities shortcomings.

1, 2, 3, 4 seems legit - no arguing there. 5? Likely the case. 6 is questionable. One year under the belt is certainly better than no years under the belt. Erb/Kill's experience I can't check off yet. Okruch has ton of experience, but still sucks. 7 is more on Julie than 'That Guy From 2015'.

On 6. , respectfully disagree. Not the Head Coach, the assistants. You want guys who have seen a lot and been at other P5 programs. Not fair on Okruch--he had nobody to work with on ST.
Disagree on 7. Former guy seemed content to have the job, and was not demanding anything in the way of upgrades. Ash has a long list. Need to do that to keep up the arms race.

If Kill is thinking ball control, with our OL I don't think we can go completely with the traditional handoff to the RB - I believe GR would have to be our QB to sprinkle in some QB keep off the read.
