Q: What kind of impact can Jerry Kill have big picture?
"I think it's two-fold. I think he gives them stability. I think he understands time of possession and how it impacts the defense. He understands the big picture. He is not a stats guy. He is not trying to get a head coach job, so he's not the cool guy on the sidelines that an AD would like to hire. Time of possession is going to be important. It's going to be a little more of a downhill attack then it was last year. I think he settles down the offense.
"Big picture, not only does he have head coaching experience, he has head coaching experience mostly if not entirely with rebuilt programs. He's had to take over and build a program. I think Chris can bounce things off of him. I think Jerry is a team guy. If Chris wants to ask his opinion about something, I think Jerry will be there for him and certainly help him with some of his experience."
Q: What's your sense of Ash as he begins his second season?
"I would refer to Chris as a very focused coach. He is business-like and focused. Confident. I'd say he has tunnel vision. I think most minutes of every day he is thinking, 'How can I make Rutgers football better?' He has a great demeanor. People are going to have to be patient with him.
"I think the best thing people could do for someone in Chris Ash's position is just to support him and understand this is a big task. The fewer distractions he has from outside pressures he has, the better. If he thinks he has to win right away, I think that's counterproductive. Let him build a program and get the non-conference schedule the way it should be. The facilities are getting better. He's a focused guy. Don't distract a focused guy. Let him stay on task."
