Do you have a favorite big time football program ?

It's fun to root for Purdue.....you realize that the decked is stacked against them harder than pretty much any other power five school, so when they actually get something impressive done, you have to take note.

Joe Tiller knew from day one that he had to bring in a spread offense to have any chance to compete, but sure enough it worked. The fact that he actually got to retire as coach is very impressive too, seems so rare in the college game.

I've grown up being an avid fan of RU with my dad and other family as alumni, but am actually a recent graduate of Ohio State, so I root for both teams heavily and still haven't figured out where my rooting interests lie when they play each other now. Living in Ohio, in-state tuition was a heck of a lot more attractive than out of state tuition for academically comparable schools. Hope you all don't crucify me!

Rutgers and the Big Ten in general with all the universities, pageantry, and tradition associated with them.

1. Rutgers
2. Big Ten (except PSU)
3. North of the Mason-Dixon Line
4. Public school
5. Underdog.
Then never root for ND. Or SEC. Or Miami. Lots of bonus points if I've enjoyed myself in a good bar in the town.

Like my user name indicates, Rutgers and Texas. Grew up in TX in a UT-slanted family, so I've cheered for the 'horns since I was a little kid. Ended up in NJ after military service and went to RU for my MBA (Rowan for undergrad).

So, when we play Texas in the National Championship game in the near future, Rutgers will be my major rooting interest.

1) RUTGERS

USC
Navy when they play Army
Anyone playing Notre Dame or Penn St.
I'd like to see WVU do well in the Big 12 and maybe Louisville in the acc.

Nothing else is really interesting to me.

I grew up a ND and Michigan fan...Yeah yeah, same reason I started life as a Cowboy fan...60's-70's, those were the two college programs that I could watch on TV each week.

I also followed Army since I grew up in Dutchess Co NY- that was the only College tailgates I ever got to attend.

I had no idea what a Rutgers was until about 2004...

Fast forward - Hate ND, Hate the Cowboys...Michigan was actually the only other team in the B1G that I would cheer for until, well, until the devil himself got there. hahahaha

Still love Army

I gravitate away from what the OP would call "big time" teams. Mostly I root for those teams to lose and root for the up-and-comers (like RU!), either from the P5 or outside it. This year, RU in the B1G (Iowa and Mich State I also like) and WA and UT in the PAC. Don't care as much about the other conferences, but will root for Louisville and maybe a few other teams.

Beyond that it's a Saturday by Saturday thing. Root for underdogs and dark horses to topple the blue bloods and favorites.

I used to like Miami before they got into the Big East, and then they were my second favorite team after RU. Once they left, I rooted against them. Always liked Oklahoma and Nebraska going back to the Joe Washington and Johnny Rodgers days. Really appreciated Nebraska after going to the RU game there 2 years ago and treated really nicely by the Nebraska fans. Texas with Earl Campbell was fun too. Nowadays, PSU, Syra, UConn and BC all losing on the same weekend is almost as fun as RU winning that same weekend.

Appalachian State! This time next year I'll be a resident of Boone, NC, and will be a season ticket holder at App State. Nice atmosphere/venue, "The Rock." Looking forward to this week's game (via TV) as The Mountaineers host the Miami Hurricanes.

In NC, I follow Duke and NC State, as well. The Heels, not so much.

I grew up a huge ND, Oklahoma and Rutgers fan. Graduated from Rutgers, so I bleed Scarlet. My family is a bunch of Naval Academy and Clemson grads, so I root for those schools as well.

I grew up a Miami Hurricanes fan because they had more Latino players on the team than any other. Plus I like the color orange (Syracuse can kiss my ass tho). But as Im a grown up now, im try to go to at least 1, maybe 3 Rutgers games a year. Would live to see NJ take over college football.

Favorite schools by conference, with Rutgers #1 over all.
PAC : ASU ( family ties)
B-12 : WV ( friend's school)
ACC : ? (Clemson right now)
SEC : LSU ( from the Paul Dietzel Chinese Bandits days )
All the Service Academies

I’m not a fan of any other school but I do admire Wisconsin. I think they are the model of where I would like Rutgers to get to....solid, blue collared type of program that goes to good to great bowl games on a regular basis.

Both my parents and my brother graduated from Texas. So I grew up loving college football in a family of Longhorns transplanted in NJ. After my freshmen year at UT (ironically Ricky Williams' freshman year as well), I transferred back to RU and have been bleeding scarlet ever since. (A big thanks to my wife for getting me back to Jersey where I belong)

So I still pull for the Longhorns as my legacy school (apologies to Southern Gentleman). I also root for anyone playing ND or PSU.

Family ties are excludable! I still love you but retain the God given right to hate all things burnt orange!

I , too, pull for App State.

But ZERO love for the Razorbacks from y'all?

WTF?

We showed y'all respect. Treated you nicely. Fed you. Were good hosts. But no love?

I am hurt.

Hi Southern Gentleman--did your son find a job in a patent firm? Was wondering about him. Hope all is well.

Thanks for asking!

No! He is VERY interested but they selected a couple people in front of him. I am not sure if he did not interview very well or what was the problem. He is still unemployed despite his Ph.D in Chemistry from Vanderbilt.

I do not even ask about employment anymore as it just doesn't get us anywhere.

Thanks again got inquiring! And thanks for your assistance!!!

Sorry to hear that. If he was in the NYC/NJ area, he would probably have an easier time of it. Surprised that in the Houston area with all of the oil and related work that someone has not picked him up. Give it time.

He is in Dallas. His wife has Ph. D in cell biology and is working at UT-Southwestern in research. Ph. D's in chemistry are a dime a dozen since the oil market has collapsed. Exxon laid off a bunch of chemists and the firms that are hiring don't want to invest in a Ph. D since they think they will lose them when/ IF the market recovers.

I have urged him to go to law school.

Whoever was playing in the old Rose Bowl games. Never dull. Especially the USC - Wisconsin game in the 60's. It was the game that didn't want to end.

Pretty much sums up my pecking order. As a kid I always liked USC and Mich St.

Excellent choices, but you're probably miserable come bowl season

There are a ton of teams I root for each Saturday. Here they are in order:

  1. Rutgers, New Jersey’s team, where my story begins and ends.

  2. Anyone playing Ped State, if their fans believe football comes before children’s safety, they deserve to lose.

  3. Anyone playing Notre Dame, if their fans don’t even know where the school is, they deserve to lose.

  4. Anyone playing UNC, the biggest cheaters of all time.

  5. Anyone playing Miami. Their fans don’t even know why they’re rooting for them.

  6. Anyone playing Syracuse or Uconn. Just too close to us.

  7. Anyone playing an SEC team.

  8. Any Big Ten team playing an out of conference opponent with the exception of Ped State.

  9. Any team that Rutgers has beaten.
The underdog.

Silly thread title. We are in the Big Ten! Rutgers is a big time football program even if we are not a top 25 team right now.
