Does anyone else think that Stripe the Birthplace vs. Michigan is a terrible idea?

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of having a Stripe-out. I just think that attempting to do it against Michigan at night is an awful awful idea. There will be so many Michigan fans in the stands wearing Maize and Blue. On TV, its going to be Red/Black/Red/Black with blotches of Michigan colors everywhere. Its only going to accentuate the fact that we can't fill our own stadium with our own fans. I would have rather done this against Indiana, Illinois etc.. but unfortunately those are not night games.

I hope it works because I think it will look very cool if done right.. just don't know if it will.

At best,it will look great. At worst,we have sold a ton of new Rutgers merchandise and brought some money in,plus it increases the amount of times you see people walking around in Rutgers gear.

It's not just us. There must have the 30,000 EDIT: I'll tweak it down to 20,000) at The Big House last week. It was shocking how much "red" was in that stadium from the blimp shots. Now...if our pgoram wasn't coming out of a hole, and Michigan didn't have their best team in God-knows how long, I'd fully expect a higher % of RU fans, regardless, but not much we can do about it for now.

"From the blimp shots." Hmm...I guess you weren't at the game then, huh? Because you are WAY off on that.

Definitely feel like I should point out how false this is. Besides the tickets allocated by the University to Wisconsin (you can see it in the top left) there was hardly any red in the stands. I'd say at most 5,000, and that's stretching it a bit. Not even close to the 1/3 to 1/5 that you imply.

On another note, you guys did a blackout against Michigan last time if I remember correctly (Maybe I'm imagining things) and it looked pretty sweet. I think the hurricane will keep a decent amount of the Michigan fans away and the stripe out will still look good.

Love the idea but not a good idea against a power school from the league. Would be better against an Illinois or Indiana or school that wont travel well

another problem is right now there is little buzz about the program and we are in a rough patch so enthusiasm for stuff like this is muted

I'm telling you, the shots from above, there was a hell of a lot of "red" in that stadium but I could have over-stated it. My bad.

I agree. However, any idea that takes some of your attention away from the action (non-action) on the field can't be all bad.
Going forward have one of these games against a school with the same colors and it won't matter as much. Another learning curve.

These type of promotions are done at night because the colors stand out in the lights. We only have two home night games and they're against Michigan and Penn State. We just so happened to pick Michigan.

I like it because the fans really come out for the night games. I think it's going to look very good.

It was actually shocking how few Wisconsin fans were there..

Last time they were in town (2010) they had at least 3x more than they did Saturday.

They were good and we were trash at that point. but They were good Saturday, too. It really was odd how few came compared to usual.

Problem is those games are nowhere near a sellout.
Need a full house for this type of event, only the marquis teams can bring fans to fill our house.

Please stop with the fans only come out for night games. Fans come out for big games, big teams. Rutgers packed it for Arkansas, packed it for Michigan State at noon..
People will come out period

Have you seen our attendance this year so far? Not a single game has broke 50k. It's the worst it's been in years. It's no coincidence the student section is sold out, it's a night game and they're playing Michigan. The top 5 highest attendances at our stadium have all been at night except for the home opener after the stadium expansion.

They played Michigan State at night last year...

I'm sorry I would have to disagree with you if you don't think night games are more sought after at our stadium. Especially more so than noon games.

If we played Iowa at night that attendance easily increases by at least 5k.

No it wouldn't. It was Iowa.
Rutgers is in the NY market. They love big events. Iowa was not a big event.
Also please explain why the Giants and Jets can fill MetLife for 1pm games but Rutgers is only good at 8pm.
Or name a night game at Rutgers against a crappy team that packed the house

the idea here is to try to do things that set up atmosphere and positive vibes.... all we can do is try...it may fall on its face this
year, so you give it another go next year.... if the team gets better, the crowd and team will both appear big time.

Yes, bad idea. First, I don't expect most fans to hear about it in advance. Second, if there are empty seats as there have been all year, it will look even worse. Why can't we just go back to "WEAR RED TO THE GAME?"

Just sit in an even numbered section and have at it. You also have 6 other home games to wear red. Everybody has heard about this by now. They print it on the tickets, they advertise it at every home game, they have it on tv, they have even called season ticket holders to advertise this far in advance.

Trying to decide whether we pack the stadium because night games or because power teams is useless, because (not coincidentally) our night games are usually against the big name teams, and when we play the top ranked teams it's usually at night. Same thing. We used to play Norfolk State at night, how were those crowds? And Iowa crowd at noon last week (third in a row, Alley boycott garbage) was still a very decent crowd.

if we can get the all seats with rutgers fans in them it might work, i think if there is 50k we will have 38k rutgers 7k michigan and about 5k whatever fans (drunks), if we get bad weather forget about stripes

For away trips many plan early. The hurricane may have scared away some but (with the exception of some possible showers) the hurricane is a non event in NJ. From Stubhub, prime tickets on the Michigan side start at about $189. On the Rutgers "side" $125 or so. Seems to b e more interest n Michigan vs RU except "us" diehards.

MD tried to do one last week for homecoming and it didn't go so great. Rutgers has better fan engagement for football than we do, but I don't think either fan base is ready to fully embrace a stripe out. It'll probably take a few failures before it ever works, comes w the culture change.

In 2004 we had a much smaller stadium....about 11,000 fewer seats. So 41,000 against MSU is not a huge thing.
MSU game last year (at night) and a ranked team wasn't even sold out.

The only big name marquis teams and their traveling fans make these games a sell out ( Penn State, Michigan). This needs to change real fast.

Stripeouts aren't too hard to execute... the biggest issue is going to be the rain. A Stripeout that 100% would work with clear skies has a 0% chance of working with rain.

Also, the argument that night games aren't more desirable and don't sell better than noon games is ludicrous.

If I remember correctly the first time RU tried a blackout game didn't that turn out crappy? I agree, probably going to take a couple tries before it works well. MD also was playing Purdue? Not exactly a marquee opponent.

Though I appreciate the hard work and vision by out athletic department - Keep it simple and do that well.

This is a nationally televised game. Can't we just do this (below) well and stop getting cute?

Geez you guys love to complain. Team is wearing black, school made money off of selling black T-shirts, just do your part. yes, we will most likely get curb stomped..get over it. Bet most of the complainers aren't even going. Moz..who cares what radio station it's on. Don't you have ESPN2 in Mass?
