Does this game jumpstart our offense?

Just wondering if we try to push tempo going forward, based on the way our offense played today.

not so sure. I would expect another game in the 60s at Northwestern, Illinois doesnt play great half court D, their big strength is their pressure so it makes sense to attack and attack and be aggressive and quite frankly RU had to with the way they were getting made baskets every possession at one point in the 2nd half.

I think what today shows is that RU is starting to develop their offensive options. Its not one guy or two. We are moving away from Eugene and Geo having to do everything...those two have to work more on sharing I think and trusting their teammates. We see Montez who some were writing off is now back on his game, we see Myles is getting more consistent in hitting those shots, we see Harper fearless in crunch time of Caleb of course just a knack for scoring in all different ways

so take all that together and RU becomes tougher to scout. The staff had to go through a major adjustment process when Kiss and Thiam production dried up and that changed everything. Now we see what is to come and its starting to blossom

I really hope this isn’t the cause of a hangover for NW. guys played a lot of Minutes and lost a real tough game. Hope they’re focused at NW

I have to believe we’ll be ready to beat NW and give them some payback for our home loss to them. Gene will play this time and Caleb has given NW another player to worry about.

Personally I hope Pike tries to push the tempo at NW, at least in the first half to see what happens.

Rather have D and rebounding.
I understand this sentiment and I love D and rebounding much as the next guy. But the downside is that we have to grind out each win and when we lose it’s excruciating to watch.

Let’s face it, sports is entertainment, and if we can win in a more exciting fashion than why not give it a try?

just looking at the box, the last meeting we had no Eugene and McConnell had zero points. Now we have to be somewhat careful expect Caleb to have to produce every game because consistency is an issue...but lets consider Thaim played 20 minutes that game, Carter had a strong game but RU shot just 4-19 from 3 and were just 15-25 at the line. I really think it was one of the worst games RU has played this year besides Purdue and Fordham

Incredibly, both teams took the same number of shots, 73, and the same number of threes, 23.

RU made one more 2-pointer than IL and IL made one more 3-pointer than RU.

IL scored 6 more points at the foul line. Game.
Sums it up... thanks for the side-to-side

Look past the raw point total and our offense was good, better than usual, but not great. We scored 1.09 points per possession against a team with an awful 2-point defense. We got 1.03 in the Ohio State loss, for comparison. It's not like we went for 1.20+ or something.

Illinois overplays and forces tempo. We can’t expedt our offense to look like this against most other teams.
Magoo, maybe not to the same degree as we ran today, but I gotta believe Pike and coaches have to seriously consider pushing tempo a bit against future opponents. Just think, we gave IL a better game than Minny, MD and MSU did, so this style of play seems to suit us (moreso now than earlier in the year) especially with the emergence of Mathis, Harper and McConnell.

We finally had our game where OUR guys shot out of their mind, and the other team scored a hundred. It’s just not fair
It’s worse than that. We scored 94 points, but lost, giving up 35 points to a Georgian true freshman who played at St. Patrick’s in NJ, ranked the number 370 player in his class who we did not offer. He may even have been miffed at the lack of a Rutgers offer, as he went out of his way to rub it in as the game went on. Can’t make it up.

Agree with you 100%. But key word is WIN. Ugly win > entertaining loss.

Do we move Baker to the bench so that Mathis and McConnell can start?

One can argue we lost the game because KIssa gave us 1 minute and we weren’t as fresh as we needed to be down the stretch.

On the flip side if they are going to play only 1 minutes because the 4 guards are separating themselves From them it is a good rhing

Mentioned in another thread, if Harper hits one or two of his 3s (he was 0-7) we likely win.

He didn’t force it. Most of them were good looks. His issue is on D.
That’s what I’m saying. He got good looks and took the shots, which is great. But he needs to make a couple (out of seven) and if he did, we likely win.

playing against Illinois' defense is a bit of a unique situation in the Big Ten. They force the most turnovers in the conference, but also let teams make the most shots when they get them (1st in opponent TO%, 14th in opponent eFG%).

McConnell had a great game and I wouldn't be surprised to see him start at PG next game, with Geo moving to the 2 spot. I'd start Harper at the 3 and have Mathis come off the bench. To me, Mathis, although physically talented and fearless, needs to play more under control with better BB IQ. I think the team took a step up offensively yesterday with McConnell providing more consistent offense. He's also a decent FT shooter, which we desperately need.

McConnell is like Baker and is a “combo guard”. I doubt the staff will want anyone other than Geo being the primary ball handler for 30+ minutes
