During rebuilding efforts, you should see fallout or kids that outplay others....it's called competition. Baker should be pushed for minutes, Mathis should be pushed for minutes, your roster should not have automatic minutes associated to them because of perceived recruiting rankings.
First is was Shaq Carter was a recruiting miss after 2 games.....
Then it was Caleb McConnell who couldn't play and we missed on XYZ recruit elsewhere.
Then it's Myles Johnson who was miles better than others, but has ups and downs 11 games into his career.
If Dourcoure doesn't pan out, it means that others outworked, out executed and outplayed an existing player.
I don't think there's minutes for 4 bigs during the 1st 11 games....Doucoure playing last year was because Doorson wasnt healthy and Myles Johnson was redshirting. It was Doucoure, Candido Sa and Doorson.
We went from 3 bigs to 4....what would the story be if Doorson didn't take his 5th year here and outworked Doucoure....??
He is still on paper a 2018 recruit....he will have 2 years left. Kids do have dips in performance, dips in confidence etc.....and if Doorson didn't work as hard this offseason, Doucoure would be in the lineup, playing with a lot of minutes.
Does anyone truly believe that Mulcahy walks through the doors next year, performs at a high level and suddenly beats out McConnell, Jacob Young, Baker and Mathis, Kiss....??
Are we going to read the same things next year when that happens??.....What happens if McConnell keeps playing well off the bench this season, a development season for him and a lot of freshman and goes up a level next year...?? Someone's not going to play more minutes next year, we are adding 2 more guards to the equation.
The newsflash is pick a name out of a hat.....someone next year is going to get outworked, outhustled and out executed next winter in the backcourt. Fans at RU used to lack of depth, lack of competition, lack of a full roster, lack of a coaching staff with options.....
Here's the real numbers across all Power 5 conferences during established programs, solid programs and rebuilding programs.....1 out of 3 recruits, dont pan out....1 out of 3, get beat out for playing time....1 out of 3 4 star players from coast to coast don't all play well in their 1st 2 years.....some transfer to non Power 5 leagues, regroup and help those programs win.
The key is to not make your minds up on 18 to 22 or 23 year old kids on what's going to happen.....some kids need minutes to perform, some need to start to get the most out of them....some dont...and can be immediate bench contributors and find a way to add value without having to start.
Doucoure has been in shape, has skills and will take time to develop, but we will have 3 bigs next year, which is more ideal than 4. Finding minutes for 3 is very easy in the OOC slate....you probably only need 3 in the B1G as well.
The story to me isn't Doucoure...the story is balancing Carter, Myles Johnson and Doorson to find 12 points and 20 to 22 rebounds out of the 5 spot every night....i don't care who gets the points and rebounds, as long as it happens....if Doucoure steps up to be one of those players understanding the defensive rotations, rebounds and plays good defense and beats out someone else going forward, that's better for RU.
