Drew Mehringer Post Game Press Conference - Howard

Saying Laviano played ok was total coach speak. Anybody in the stadium today saw he was far from it.
Same mistakes .

Hopefully Gio and Oden get more meaningful reps and can step into the starting role by Game 5 or 6 if needed.

Yeah, I mean this was HOWARD... a B1G QB should be lighting them up... not fumbling and bumbling through a game, with a mediocre stat line. The 13 yard sack to get out of field goal range could have lost us the game against anyone else, and it's just inexcusable for a more senior player.

Laviano has certainly been given his chance... time to see what someone else can do. Beauty is, if they don't do well, you can slot Laviano back in, and he'll have fire under his ass to play better with a second chance.

Nothing against the kid, we love that he works hard and plays hard... but it's time to experiment, because the B1G defenses won't be as merciful.

Problem is nobody else attempted a pass.

I've been defending Lav last year mainly because I was convinced Rettig didn't have what it takes. This year is different. It's time for a change.

After watching that, Laviano is toast. They will phase him out and phase the other guys in. And they won't feel guilty about it because they gave him the chances to be the #1 guy. They're doing it the right way.

Geo and Oden will throw a lot more interceptions. That is what I got out of it. Mehringer said he doesn't want to put the defense into bad situations. Geo and Oden looked good running the ball because Howard was totally gassed.

At the very least, it gives our future opponents more to prepare for with limited amounts of practice time.

Coach could use some sunscreen.

Very interesting to watch that. It sounds like the plan long term is to develop Gio and Tylin, and if/when the coaches feel they will protect the football, the switch will be made. Maybe one reason Laviano got all the snaps at Washington was to let these guys get their first playing time at home against a weaker opponent. I will be surprised if only one QB plays against the Lobos.

When talking about Oden DM mentioned improving footwork. Can't imagine anyone's footwork being worse than Laviano.

Thanks. Really enjoyable to listen to that interview. They have a plan. They just need the right players to fit into that plan.

Has a plan lol ? What were you watching ? He and ash both said they didn't know what they were going to do with Oden .

Gio is doing well. Oden has a long way to go but we may see him in run packages.

We dropped 3 passes that I saw and the DB made a nice breakup on Grant in the end zone. Did not think Laviano played good or bad which is exactly what coach said. INT was a bad route but coach said he needs to eat it and not throw to where the WR should be. Sack was a big mental mistake. Other than that he was was OK throwing and did a decent job running. Agree with other thread on the back foot issue but nobody is getting open and way too much pressure from Howard early on.

At the end Howard was worn out. Credit mainly to Grant but I though Martin looked okay and Hicks ran hard. Looks like they will split reps.

I would not be surprised to see more than one QB. I think we will struggle a whole lot to pass against OSU based in what we have seen so I expect to see all different packages.

I also would not be surprised to see more of Jonas and Kamal at OL. Both look pretty athletic.

Laviano played well, but he misses too many easy passes. He has to be 80% with passes less than 10 yards.

Laviano was not okay. His arm isn't strong to begin with and my concern is he's very inaccurate when our guys are open. Constantly see our guys torquing their bodies to go back to the football or sometimes to run back to it. He's a 4th year player, same year as Grant. At this stage of your career you need to produce or sit. IMO He'll play until Gio or Tylin are more mature and by the sounds of the press conference, Gio is progressing quickly to the point where he may catch/surpass Laviano by mid-year (probably as we are going through the buzzsaw of Iowa, OSU, Michigan).

Yup, DM said Gio not too far behind. Talked about mistakes made in practice need to be ironed out. Said without the mistakes Laviano would have been solid. Ash said give the kid some slack. Gave him credit with keeping the offense together.

Nevertheless I'd like to see more of Gio. Injuries. How many qb's did Kelly go through in that one great season for Cincy?

In watching the replay he actually played better than I thought live. We dropped a few. We did not exactly have WR's running wide open. When we did he hit them. One completion to Adugosi was a bad throw off of his heels. He needs to step into that and take one in the chops because that could have been a big play. But after that he was stepping into his throws and making good throws. The TD to Patton was a great pass as was the last TD to Harris.

The Offense as a whole sputtered early and then fair to good the rest of the game. Defense was the same.

Food for thought, we beat Howard 38-25 in 2014. We got blown out by the good teams and finished 8-4. We blew out UNC in the Bowl game. We can only hope for an outcome like that this year.
