Dual Sport WR Jawuan Harris Starts Baseball Season

Nice that Jawuan makes the travel squad for the Florida trip(s). Hope to catch Rutgers baseball when they play at FGCU in Fort Myers, FL, February 15 & 16 (Tuesday & Wednesday). FGCU has a real nice baseball complex next door to their on-campus Alico Arena. An opportunity for Rutgers fans in southwest Florida to get out and root for the Jersey boys. The field is minutes from exit 123 of Interstate 75. Plenty of shaded stadium seats.

I think Harris was closed to getting drafted for MLB. He is apparently very fast.
Nice that Coach Ash was supportive of him playing 2 sports and honoring the commitment Rutgers made.
Article says last dual sport athlete that PLAYED 2 sports at once was James Cann. Very impressive young man.

"As Harris becomes a regular around the Hale Center training complex, fellow athletes are starting to express shock that he plays two sports. The last Rutgers athlete to double up in football and baseball is believed to be James Cann (1988-90)."

As long as grades are in order I have NO issue with 2-sport athletes and thinks it sucked that some of the great spring guys we had on football, the past decade or so, didn't get to run spring track.

The article doesn't say the last to play two sports. It says the last to play football and baseball. There may have been a host of two-sport guys or gals, for all I know. I do know for certain that Joe Porter from Franklin did two sports. Schiano wasn't happy about it, but was forced to allow it. I'll leave it at that. But Porter played football from 2003-06, and was the co-MVP of the track team in '06 (so his junior year. He played football his junior and senior years). I don't recall if he ran as a senior.
His brother Jeff ran for Michigan, BTW, and make the last Olympic team.

Bummer, just missed this as I am here in Naples this week instead.

Ever go the any Everblades games at Germain Arena, Mr_Twister?

I'm pretty sure that Porter was the last football guy to play 2 sports at RU (as PK didn't play baseball until his football career was finished).

Graber never allowed it except in special cases, such as Mario Henry. But Shea welcomed it, and after he was hired, there was a surge of football players - including Derrick Ward, Bobby Orro, Reggie Funderburk, James Ealey, etc. - who competed on the track team in the mid-nineties... Some really fast and talented athletes and it was a major boost for Rutgers Track and Field.

I had already graduated, but understand Schiano's policy on the issue was the same or similar to Graber's.

Can't say I have been to an Everblades game. I am not fond of professional sports. After a two year wait, I am an FGCU season ticket buyer for hoops. I pay less for my ticket than I do for a season parking tag at the RAC for Rutgers hoops. FGCU is my adopted team. I am here for the winter (Jan, Feb, Mar) -- some of FGCU's best games are before January when they play the majority of their OOC games, unfortunately.

I remember that Shea had recruited a positionless athlete by the name of Joe B. Cirone. Not sure if he ever saw the football field, but he turned out to be an excellent baseball player for the Knights.

Also I seem to remember Ted Trump playing baseball, but I could be wrong on that.

Wasn't Mike Stephans, who sometimes posts here, also football/baseball? It was amazing with Kivlehan. Spent most of his time on football on special teams, then plays one season with the baseball team, is Big East Player of the Year and now is one step away from the major leagues.

In high school we had a guy play 2 sports in 1 season. Pitched on the BB team & would run the 440 & throw the shot in his BB uniform between innings.

Great story about Prime Time, when he was at FSU, was running the anchor of a 4x100 meter relay final then running to the baseball stadium, hopping over the fence, and setting into his spot in the outfield just moments later.

That's what I'm talkin about! LOL

Meekins wrestled and actually qualified for Nationals as a freshman. Schiano didn't allow him to step on a mat after that year. Under Shea, Tom Petko, Mike Belh and JJ Shutte were wrestlers and football players.

Pretty sure he only played a single season, following his last year of football, because we wouldn't allow him on the diamond at the time.

This is another reason not to bring back Schiano he, was a stubborn ass. If a kid can do 2 sport and keep his grades up all the better. Oh but he will lose valuable training! BS"it By doing a second sport he in fact is cross training which can make him a better athlete in both sports.
