This morning at 8:20-ish some one of the two on-air personalities representing "Buckeye Nation" mocking RU football stating "Rutger" needs to earn their "s." Until then, not "Rutgers" but "Rutger."

Nice, ay? Terrific representative of "Buckeye Nation." Whoever this guy is, he "sounds" like a scholar and a gentleman. Likely an ex-player.

Anyone hear this? LOL....

He did say the BB team may have earned its "s," as they upset "someone" and made the tourney. Also, beating Syracuse today would help the FB team earn its "s." Sheesh....

Apparently his name is Bobby Carpenter. Former Ohio St LB and son of ex-NY Giant RB Rob Carpenter.

As long as the B1G checks keep clearing into the RU account, then frankly my dear I don’t give a damn what The Buckeye Nation trolls say about us.
Sure. But this stooge is being paid to appear on ESPNU College Game Day. As a co-host. That's the context.

What does that even mean?

Sounds like typical attitude from
“THE” aholes from that school obsesses over a common grammatical article!

It’s a Reddit joke; the basketball and football crowds on Reddit do the Rutger thing

+sometimes when we do win, they’ll give us the ‘s’ or we’ll even take a letter from the school we beat

The nicknames that posters on this board have for Syracuse and other schools are far more cringe if we're being honest
Sure. But this Bobby character is a co-host on ESPNU GameDay. Posters being snarky is one thing. This co-host, though? Trashing another B1G program on air? Not nice. Or smart.

Our school is older than their state. Besides, a "buckeye" is an effin' nut. LOL...

It’s not exclusive to Ohio State fans; lots of users on Reddit partake in the joke, including self-deprecating RU fans (Reddit college sports discussions are generally more light-hearted and self-deprecating vs serious discussion of the teams)

I pity him. Some people just have an unreasonable, unexplainable dislike for Rutgers.

The fighting Acorns should worry about not embarrassing the conference on big stages again and again instead of focusing on Rutgers

This "needs to earn their 'S'" thing is strange.
But It seems to me that it's related to a larger issue, which is a general confusion some people have with the name of our great university (e.g. "what's a Rutgers"). Some people just don't get that "Rutgers" is someone's name. They seem to think that Rutgers is the plural of "Rutger".

"Rutgers" is of course a Dutch surname.
Surnames first came into use in the late middle ages due to taxes. Surnames allowed the tax collector to keep tabs on who had paid and who had not.
This surname's origins, like many others, has an "s" at the end meaning: "son of". So "Rutgers" means "son of Rutger". Other similar surnames include 'Sanders" (son of Sander), and Rogers (son of Roger), etc.

I guess that means Purdue sucks more, they have never beaten Rutgers in football.
Ha, ha, they're known as "Purd" to Buckeyes. They haven't earned their "u" yet, nor the "e". I'll give the Buckeye loud mouths a point for creativity in avoiding the typical hackneyed phrases of "we suck" and "throw us out." Black, blah, blah. Check on us in 4 years after we've had some time getting near full payment of the B10 media payout. Most of those guys don't even understand that Rutgers was getting so little compared to everyone else, even compared to Nebraska and Maryland. Of course we sucked -- we took a lousy Ohio St. assistant coach and then didn't have the revenue to correct that mistake.
