Chris Ash on adding five new assistant coaches:
“I like our staff chemistry right now, I like the relationships our coaches have with each other and with our players. I think our players have really taken onto our new coaches, connected with them very well and have embraced the new coaches at their position. I think it’s been smooth and it’s actually been fun to watch, new level of energy when you bring in new guys.”
Senior LB Trevor Morris on changing his number from 15 to 5:
“It’s a swagger thing, but I feel like we are going to try to change it into a mentality. That single digit means we are coming for you.”
DC Jay Niemann on sophomore WILL LB Tyshon Fogg:
“He dealt with a concussion in the middle of the season last year and missed three games and maybe part of another one. That maybe threw his timetable off a little bit. But you could see when he got in towards the end of the year and got into a couple of games after he was healthy, what he was starting to be able to do. Now, he just has to pick up where he left off.”
Tyshon Fogg on his current weight:
“I am up around 240 right now. So I am pretty much playing right there. The lowest I will probably get is 235, but I probably won’t touch that anytime soon.”

Recruiting Tidbits
OL CJ Hanson (St. John Vianney - N.J.)
Rutgers is no stranger to recruiting St. John Vianney as Micah Clark and Jamaal Beaty are alums and Hanson is the latest O-line prospect to come through the program. Hanson was at Rutgers’ second spring practice session yesterday and was able to watch his former teammates.
“They looked great it was really good to catch up with them, they said they loved it (at Rutgers) and itis a great fit for them,” Hanson said. “It was a good time, I really enjoyed it. Practice looked great. It was very rapid fire (lots of reps). Guys were working hard and competing the intensity was very high which was great.”
Hanson does not yet hold a Rutgers offer, although he is a prospect to keep an eye as the recruiting season moves on.
“Coach Ash was happy to have me there and he talked about the program and what Rutgers has to offer,” Hanson said.
More Thursday Practice Insight
Barringer High class of 2019 quarterback and Rutgers commit Zamar Wise was on hand for Rutgers’ Thursday practice session along with his teammate and brother Corey Walker, who is listed as a 6-foot-1, 230-pound athlete with a Rutgers offer.
Barringer head coach Ronly London talked about the visit.
“It went well. The coaches treated us nice, like they always do. Football is in the air so Zamar and Corey were very excited to be on campus as usual. It was a good day overall. Rutgers is starting to take shape, seen some very good stuff on defense; fast to the ball in the air or on the ground. Offensively, it is a work in progress, but I can see what it's going to be when it's a finished product. I'm excited for what's to come.”
And which players stood out to London?
“The players that stood out to me was the big quarterback from IMG (Art Sitkowski), the running back that wears 25 on offense (Raheem Blackshear). On the defensive side, the secondary as a whole, those boys were moving. The big corner I believe had 22 on (Damon Hayes), and the safety number 2 (Malik Dixon).”
Meanwhile, Wise spent his time watching the quarterbacks and mentioned what he saw from new OC John McNulty. “
“He does things from the (LA) Chargers playbook. The playbook is tough,” Wise said.
Walker, a class of 2021 prospect, holds a Rutgers offer and since school was closed today, he was able to watch practice from the sidelines.
“I was watching the linebackers. I was watching the coverages and learning how to process things. I was talking to Coach Ash and Coach McNulty while I was there. I thought the team was working harder.”
ATH Jaaron Hayek (Wayne Hills, N.J.)
One of two RU commits in the class of 2019, Hayek provided an update on how the offseason is going for him.
“Really good, been training hard and hitting physical therapy from my hip injury, but I’m just about 100%. I’m planning on running track, but going to start running in meets after The Opening and Rivals Camp and see how I feel.”
It looks as though Hayek’s home may now be on the defensive side of the football at Rutgers
“I’ve talked quite a bit with (Safeties) Coach Noah Joseph,” Hayek said. “They like me as a safety and I like him. We talk pretty often, he sent me some clips of the DBs doing drills.”
Hayek also said he is going to be at his first spring practice sometime after next week’s spring break.
QB Connor Katz (Cranford, N.J.)
The local class of 2019 quarterback checked out Rutgers’ Thursday’s practice and was able to get a close-up glimpse of the new offense. Katz shared his thoughts on what he saw.
“The new offense really stood out to me. Coach McNulty is doing a really good job of mixing the pro-style with the spread and taking a little of everything from the places he’s been and mixing it all together to create a really dynamic offense. The culture has changed a lot also. It was a very high intensity practice even though they weren’t in any pads. The coaches brought the energy and the players responded really well.”
