Final Four Games Thread - 2025

Tonight's rally was great... almost as incredible as Houston's comeback at Kansas earlier this season. Go to the 13:15 mark and watch the rest. Unreal.

Hard to believe Houston and RU both finished 1-2 in Vegas. We both beat Notre Dame.

Duke Loss very reminiscent of our loss to Houston in 2021.

Poor Proctor : misses a key free throw and dribbles ball off his leg in final minute of game. 🤮

Houston defense / culture and older more polished players too much for Duke inexperience !

I also think Duke not being previously tested in crunch time due to weak ACC hurt them !

They should be suing the ACC to get more money like FSU and Clemson since the league sucks.

I never understand the stupidity of coaches. You have a team that is down BEAT THEM. Why do you give them free walk ups the court, PRESS THEM. PUT PRESSURE ON THEM. You let them play down hill to the basket on defense. Then just play ISO BALL on Offense to run out the clock when that is NOT your offense

I doubt former Duke head coach K and the fan base are happy with the current coaching staff after choking a double digit second half lead.Houston has the far better head coach while the Duke roster with 5 star recruits played like the first day of practice totally disorganized. In this NCAA Tournament Houston and Florida showed the ability to win games after being behind .Clayton from Florida has been the best tournament player with successive 30 point games.

Why is proctor driving underneath the hoop...all he had to do there was do NOTHING STUPID. I'm yelling do not do anything stupid right before he did that.

MOVE THE BALL

Multiple people keep saying this. And honestly not enough credit is being given to Houston. They put the pressure on you and make it seem impossible to inbounds. It’s what they do
The problem.on their inbound is they take 2-3 seconds setting meaningless stupid picks. Go GET THE BALL. If you get yourself in the corner band it off their leg & reset. Cannot believe in this day & age these guys don't have the smarts to do that

3 of their starters are Freshmen. Inexperience on the big stage and a coach that got totally out of his offensive scheme and did NOTHING to dictate play on the defensive half of court. You see time & time again non aggressive defense when the other team is playing uptempo....YOU HAVE TO MATCH THEIR INTENSIFY

1 more thing in collapse of Duke that was getting me screaming....Houston just scored multiple times....after the score HUSTLE TO THE BALL and get the ****ing ball inbounds before Houston sets up press. You want to BEAT PRESS don't walk after the ****ing ball. There is NO PRESS if you get it in bounds.

I don’t think anyone in the duke community is considering firing Scheyer. He’s 37 he’s one of the youngest coaches in the country, made a final 4 in year 3, won 35 games and won the acc

That comeback was WAYYYY more about the Houston cougars being a bunch of DAWGS and not giving up on their way of playing basketball

Other than a missed free throw I thought most of the comeback was Houston making great play after great play and not so much duke fumbling

Hawks take that people are questioning cooper flaggs worth if he’s IT? If Jon scheyer and staff should be questioned? Laughable

Duke playing almost zero close games all year hurt but it was way more about Houston

Pike....Scheyer etc.... learn to coach better. You do not slow down play when other team increases intensity 10 fold. You pick up your speed and match their intensity. It is a recipe for FAILURE. They press...you press.
If you are not playing at their speed you CANNOT be successful. Total failure on Scheyer. To have his players walking to ball after score allowing Houston to set up for press is just beyond STUPID. Run to ball and get it in bounds PRESS BEAT

Scheyer bad coaching 100%. Questioning Flagg being it? Not sure where that comes from

Pike did it...Scheyer did it. They got a lead and we're more concerned about winning by 1 and taking time off clock then playing basketball.

Hope Flagg comes back to Duke he brings excitement to college basketball. He will be #1 pick this yr or next year. He has the next 20 yrs to make $30-40mil a yr. He's already making $millions. So I don't want to hear you have to leave if you are #1 pick. You have 1 go-around to be a kid and enjoy college and he does so why not run it back

It should also be pointed out that Duke had a combination of young guys and transfers. Meanwhile Houston played in the tougher conference and had guys who have been playing together for a long time
I don’t know why people are saying get the ball in quicker. Houston got set up immediately. They had so much pressure, heck the one kid committed a tech by reaching over. That Duke team never dealt with that type of intensity in the low level ACC

This was NjHawks quote

“A lot of Jon Scheyer fans have to be asking the question about winning a national title....if Cooper Flagg is really that guy, is Duke going to win a title after this type of meltdown??“

Ridiculous take about Flagg, about duke ever winning a title and questioning scheyer

This

There wasn’t one inbounds play after a score where Houston gave duke any opportunity to get the ball in and up quickly

They knew exactly what they were getting into after each score … they are extremely well coached and are probably going to be a real problem matchup for Florida

I mentioned earlier the Gillis flagrant let Houston back in the game, Duke was cruising until then and a quick 5 point swing made things a lot tighter.

Houston played much better and tougher down the stretch, but Duke also had a lot of decent looks that went in and out. Maybe it was nerves or just bad luck, but if Duke converts a couple of those the game remains out of reach for Houston.

Clayton is awesome . . .
Question for those who follow the game closer: Clayton looked fantastic. He doesnt project to the next level higher than Dylan? Is it a height thing, raw talent of Dylan, or other because Clayton sure looked better.

Both games last night looked like football games being played with a round ball on a basketball court. The refs swallowed their whistles even on very obvious fouls.

18 year old Dylan was much better than 18 year old Clayton, and is expected to continue being better than Clayton at future ages.

Yeah, I see how just go getting the ball worked for us. Houston would press us and beat us by 30-40. If you're the slower team, which Duke was, its hard to just go get the ball, and you don't want to get it in the corner either where it is easy to get trapped. That's what Houston wanted. You say throw the ball off the defender's leg like it is something easy to do. And even if it is successful, look at where you are inbounding the ball now. BB 101 - don't inbound the ball to the corner vs. full court pressure.

Everyone is freaking out over the Flagg call but I think more questionable calls went against Houston late than Duke, including a blatant OOB miss.

Flagg specifically. Yes he had a good game, yes he created those looks by himself, but those are shots your best guy needs to make.

Teams with leads don't press.

It's basically a universal truth.

It’s nuts!! Their defense was so good. Even when Duke got the ball to Kon Knueppel with under 30 seconds to go, Houston immediately doubled and forced him to give it up to Proctor. That’s coaching and execution. Houston forced the play here.

Bro NBA does not play defense
Sampson has said that his time as an NBA assistant completely changed the way he taught defense, and in the last several years at Houston, his teams have smothered a lot of offenses with defensive principles learned in a league that "doesn't play defense." I'm sure Pike wishes RU "didn't play defense" like the Oklahoma City Thunder "don't play defense." RU would have probably won a lot more games if they "didn't play defense" the way Oklahoma City and other good NBA teams "don't play defense."
