Fitzpatrick getting schooled by Clemson's freshman walk-on

How was that kid not recruited yet walks on and starts at Clemson as a freshman?

First of all he is a Red-shirt Freshman, which they conveniently left out. Second he is 5'10 176 LBs. His bio indicates he put on 20 Lbs after his Freshman year to get to 176......Clemson probably only offers schollies to kids that weigh 156 lbs if they are kickers. Also assume that he was probably less than 156lbs his junior and senior year when recruiting mostly takes place.

Just to add to it he was a QB in high school. One article said he weighed 150 Lbs at the time, Dabo considered him too small to actually play, but gave him a preferred walk-on spot. He is also the back-up punter

Did it ever occur to you guys that you can only cover someone for soo long? Watson's scrambling ability made it hard for the dline to get to himand db to keep the coverage. And Watson made some nice throws. I hate to say it Fitz played well for a true frosh.

Yeah coverage was very good on first TD. Dumb thread title.

What is embarrassing is grown men disparaging an 18 year old behind a computer screen because he chose to go play for Saban at Alabama instead of Flood at Rutgers...

The WR is a walk-on because, like Michael Burton, he doesn't fit the physical profile and the team preferred to issue scholarships to surer shots. And like Michael Burton, he wanted to play for one of his state's universities. But then again, he might be the son of a high school coach in South Carolina who gets a nice summer payday working a Clemson summer camp, which is often the case in the south when it comes to football and directing players to state programs.

When he was getting toasted by Renfro was Fitzpatrick repping Alabama?
Will it be Jersey pride when he puts on the National Championship ring?
It's a muddle.

Look,I joined in on the piling on of MF, but the kid was out there an awful lot-D and ST and was around the ball all night. His coverages were pretty decent considering his experience-McCourty and Ryan get exposed too,it comes with the job. Getting that kind of playing time on a NC tells me all I need to know about his skill set.

Exactly. The OP didn't watch any of Bama games because Fitzpatrick had a hell of a year at Alabama as a true freshmen.

Yeah, he's a good player. But he thought playing for Old Bridge was beneath him just like he thought RU was beneath him. So I don't really wish him well.
He was just a starter on a national championship winning team. I think he's above playing for Old Bridge and RU too. When RU starts to win Big Ten championships and then a NC or two, then we can talk.

Don't be jealous. Just win.

Seriously? So the rich just get richer and we should never get top-end talent at RU?
That's not what I said nor what I implied. You don't like the kid because the kid felt good enough to go to a better HS football program (apparently) and to a better football program than RU. That's fine. You can like who you want.

But the fact remains that he IS clearly good enough to go play in those places (as evidenced by his starting role on the national championship winning team as a freshman). So being upset at the kid for recognizing and taking advantage of his abilities seems petty to me. I understand the sentiment, but I don't share it.

I prefer to be happy and grateful when great players choose to come and play for RU and I leave it at that. I don't see the value of being negative about those who don't. Because what does being negative gain me? What does it gain RU?

I have better things to do than "hate on" a 19-year-old kid. But I don't have to root for him just because of where he grew up. Hey, at least I didn't say, "He's dead to me" like some others have!
True, no need to even think about him at all anymore.

It's like Schiano. Loved what he did for the program when he was here. Once he left, I hardly ever thought about him at all (unless a post here forced me to). Always move forward. Unless playing soccer, than backward and sideways is often, but not always, a far better choice.

Peppers, Eli Apple , and Fitzpatrick probably the best DBs to come out of NJ in past few years. Hopes soon we get players like this.

Renfrow was pressed into duty due to injuries and suspensions. Clemson's top receiver injured his neck in game 1 and one of their other top receivers was sent home for violating team rules before the Orange Bowl. Nonetheless, they were pretty good throws by Watson.
