No Dylan Harper, no problem for Rutgers. In one of the most unlikely yet hungriest performance of the season, Rutgers went into Evanston and dispatched of the Cats with relative ease. It is nice to win again. I am going to give alot of credit to this team and the coaching staff. They really worked hard and were ready to play. Such a frustrating season for they players and coaching staff but they get to enjoy this one. Harper was pretty much everything for RU in the 2024 part of the season with Ace still trying to find his way. Harper has been hampered by various ills and the teams fortunes went down even as Ace developed into a NBA starter over the past few weeks. While Ace was the main ingredient tonight, the Knights would not have been victorious if the much maligned supporting cast did not step up and eat. Perhaps some players more comfortable without Harper on the court. It sure seemed like it. Upperclassmen stepping up with timely shots. The youth movement of more time and positive contributions from Grant and Dortsch given RU an added dimension of some length. I was struck by how committed RU was to rebounding and playing some tough defense. Northwestern really struggled getting into any flow and has RU hands and arms just enough to bother them. I saw alot of rushed type blown bunnies by the Cats. I came away unimpressed by Northwestern and do not think they have much NCAA hopes and will likely be competing to make the Big 10 tournament

First Ace Bailey just a sick first half. 9-10 fg and it didnt matter what kind of defense Northwestern played, Ace was making anything and everything. Ace has now made this his team in the absence of Dylan. A once in a lifetime talent for Rutgers. You can lament the disappointment of this season but Ace has delivered in spades. Not as deadly in the 2nd half but didnt need to be as his teammates stepped up. Ace finished with 37 points just 2 off his career high. 13-20 fg, 5-8 from 3, 6-6 at the line, 6 boards and 3 blocks. Ace will be the best player on the court ion every single game he plays the rest of the season. He will throw in some clunkers like vs Michigan State every now and then but you pretty much know he is capable of going off on these heaters every single night and that at least is a glimmer of hope for Rutgers fans to try and stay in games. Also liked that Ace kept his emotions in check tonight and let his stats do the talking. Man this kid just loves basketball, you can see it when he does post game interviews he practically cannot contain himself. Imagine if we could have him for one more year.

Yet unlike at Indiana or Penn State where Ace went off, this time Ace had some help. I think a key sequence with RU struggling to score at the start of the first half jumpstarted RU and never looked back. Zak Martini big time deep 3 to put RU up 50-42 and then Acuff came out of nowhere with a bucket to put RU up 10 and then later with a huge 3 to extend the lead to 12 and then flipped in a jumper when NW had crept to within 7. Acuff ended up with 13 on 5-7 fg shooting and 4 assists. J Mike was very good tonight. Its a shame we dont get this every night from him. Great court vision with 8 assists and he even contributed offensively with 8 points on 3-6 fg shooting and great defense with 3 steals. Big dunk at the end that effectively made this academic. Overall the supporting cast followed Ace's lead and fed themselves going 15-29 fg for 42 points. RU shot 57% overall and 57% from 3 at 8-14. Grant was solid early contributing 6. Dortsch continues to get his feet wet and isnt looking all that bad, just missing a great dunk as he was fouled...albeit his ft need work. J Will and JD absolutely did not have it tonight and good on Pike for recognizing that and limiting their minutes. J Will was plagued by the flu so only 15 minutes. Tough break for JD after his career 26 point game but he was forcing things too much and that was hurting the team. Lathan was good and bad but still battled with 9 points and 6 boards.

It is ridiculous but maybe having 2 NBA superstars on a team isnt a good thing. Can both coexist in a way where the rest of the team can breath and eat? Interesting question. Of course RU is more of a threat to win game with a healthy Harper and I am not forgetting everything he brings. Having both Ace/Dylan to me means less of the rest of the team about to feel confident and not worry about making mistakes. Hopefully Dylan can get healthy quickly and some of the development RU has show with some individual young player like Grant and Dortsch and the tougher defense RU has played of late can all be integrated together and at least for the fans we can have an entertaining last 6 weeks of the season.

So Pike has been criticized so much this year, its time to give him some credit for keeping the team together and pushing the right buttons without Harper in the lineup. I have seen better RU teams mail it in vs Northwestern who is usually well coached but looked more like pussycats rather than Wildcats tonight. 11-10 on to 2 game home stretch bac at the rac vs 2 very good NCAA bound teams but 2 teams that have shown some vulnerability in the past few games. It would be a perfect time for some legendary RAC hocus pocus that might feed the Rutgers faithful's love tank to keep us warm in February.

More than anything, this game at least gives us some energy for the upcoming games. Lose tonight and the RAC is a morgue for these upcoming games.

There’s some juice now.
yep definitely a shot too at beating Michigan, they are not as sharp on the road and Goldin had the flu last week so we shall see if he is 100%.

Big picture does not change anything because we are 1000 miles away but its nice to win and look forward to the next game

tldr
good win

Regardless how the season ends there should be banners hanging in the RAC honoring Bailey and Harper for choosing Rutgers. They are truly elite basketball players who are worth the price of admission.Scoring over 30 points is a amazing achievement because opponents are trying all types of defense trying to stop them .In Bailey's case he is knocking on the door for scoring 40 points.

As good as Bailey was, what I really liked was what Coach P did with Sommerville. At one point, Sommerville let a Northwestern player just drive down the lane for a bucket. Coach yanked him. When he brought him back a minute or two later Sommerville played like a man possessed. Great coaching.
The announcers were onto that... they imagined Pike saying "why worry about Nicholson with Martinellie with the ball in the paint? STOP PENETRATION FIRST". I think they got it spot on. (oh and you are correct.. Sommerville calmed down and played very well.. eventually, I saw Nicholson get a pass inside one on one with Sommerville and just surrendered and passed it outside. He either had no confidence vs our frosh or was too tired trying to keep up with him and Dortch.

Later I tried reading coach/player interaction for NW.. on a play where Nicholson tried to grab a board with one hand and lost it out of bounds.. I saw Coach Collins put both his hands up and I imagined I saw him saying "Use two hands!".. then I saw Nicholson plaintively reply and pantomime that his other arm was busy holding down a Rutgers player.

Good recap, thought Pike really kicked Collins ass tonight. Pike pushed the right buttons as he limited JWill (maybe his illness caused him to be limited too) and he limited Derkack as well. The offense flowed better with more Acuff and JMike on a night where JWill and Derkack were just being ball dominant ball stoppers. Acuff and JMike combined for 20 pts., 12 assists and 4 boards while JWill and Derkack went for combined 4/2/1. Collins was brutal tonight, not once unless I missed it, did he run a double team at Ace and force others to score instead. Ace was left to roam free against one defender and NWestern paid the price. Terrible job by Collins, he had to try and force Grant, Martini, JMike, Lathan, JWill, Derkack, anybody really BUT ACE, to try and score. Collins never adjusted, he had to force the ball out of Ace’s hands even if it meant the others would get wide open shots. I didn’t understand his strategy at all. If Pike did that and never doubled a player who was killing us we would be killing him, rightfully so.

Was this JaMichael's best ever game at RU? 8 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover, 3 assists including two alley oops to Ace. And it looks like plus 19 overall.

I appreciate that Lathan played like a different player when he got pulled for a couple quick minutes. He plays so soft inside like he doesn't even know what to do, I hope he improves that part of his game because then he will be a really good player. It was nice to win, I almost didn't watch it because I am mentally checked out but decided to watch anyway. Nice late night snack.

What a great write up for a great win for a growing team.. couldn't see the game...so, thank you!

" It would be a perfect time for some legendary RAC hocus pocus that might feed the Rutgers faithful's love tank to keep us warm in February."....INDEED!

Go RU!

As good as Bailey was, what I really liked was what Coach P did with Sommerville. At one point, Sommerville let a Northwestern player just drive down the lane for a bucket. Coach yanked him. When he brought him back a minute or two later Sommerville played like a man possessed. Great coaching.
Sommerville showing on-court respect for his coach...I like it!!!!! I'm not sure we would have seen the same player reaction a few weeks ago. Good for Lathan! Go RU!

Unless it’s a play on words that escapes me, the word is “Hearty” not “Hardy”.
Yes - but you can eat hearty at Hardee's if you have a strong stomach. Either way, good recap. Just wish we can find a way to unlock consistency in our supporting cast. Derkack goes from 26 against MSU (I know, an anomaly) to 1. It seems like all season we are wondering who, if anyone, will step up in the supporting cast on a given night. But can't take a league road win for granted - no need to nitpick right now. As Degaz said, this win breathes new life into Saturday's home game vs. Michigan.

@bac2therac I was hoping your post game review would praise Pike and you didn't disappoint. His decision to leave Derkack on the bench for the 2nd half was big. The teaching and sub patterns throughout the game were excellent.

From day 1, my hope was that Acuff would be this team's 3rd scoring option. Well tonight, we needed him to be the 2nd scoring option and he came through.

It's going to be fascinating to see how Pike views the matchups with Michigan and who gets PT. Pike made a comment during the post game press conference that alluded to not playing Dylan unless he was 100%. Seeing him in that boot tells me he isn't playing against Michigan and it's TBD for the Illinois game. People on Twitter were talking about Dylan shutting it down and preparing for the draft. But I don't think his sprain is that bad or he wouldn't have played 13 minutes against MSU. I'm confident we'll see Dylan again but it might not be for these next two home games.

When the refs stopped the game to review if the Martinelli heave hit the rim, it was clear as day on the replay that Nicholson had a hand on Lathan's shoulder to impede him from going for the rebound. It should have been an offensive foul. Instead, they got the dead ball possession and Leach hit a 3.

Dylan should sit until he is 100%. Next man up. We have four guards still, Williams, Acuff, Davis, and Derkack. Need at least two to play well every night, and hopefully at least three.

One other observation that struck me, NWestern has Martinelli, Barnhiser, Berry, and Nicholson who all are very experienced players who have only played under Collins. They are not new arrival transfers in his system and style of play. Jalen Leach is a new transfer but still has college experience. What struck me is that this team just doesn’t look very good, didn’t make sense to me with all those experienced guys. Their defense did not look good and they didn’t seem like they had enough good bench/role players……hmmmm…..sounds familiar to some of our issues.

Nice recap, great win with Bailey going off, but the rest of the supporting cast actually playing pretty well. Really want to see how this team might be able to play with a healthy Harper/Bailey and an improved supporting cast, especially if Pike can keep recognizing who is playing well and who isn't. As per my thread the other day, I think this can be a very good team now that the superstars/freshmen have some experience and the various parts are meshing a bit better especially on D (not great D, necessarily, but better than earlier this year). Also, think you meant "hearty" in your thread title.

He's improved a little, but damn, for a big man, he shoots from about the same height in the post as JMike and has been a complete zero in the mid range/perimeter game that people spent the offseason saying he was good at. Excellent free throw shooter. Real plus as a freshman.

They aren't a very talented team, they just play very hard, and physical. Also an extremely ugly group of kids!

Really happy with the win. Keeps the dream alive. 10 games left with 2 game margin of error.

I think we were VERY fortunate to win as I felt we played one of our poorest defensive game and were fortunate NW missed a lot of good looks and we obviously shot way better than normal.

Gave up 72 in 65 possessions. Almost every time we had a defensive breakdown they missed.

Our success for the year is coming down to having elite offensive performances and when we don't our chances of victory are small.

100% correct – – but they can’t make the call when the play is blown dead.

Can't agree here. Defensive breakdowns led to open lay ups. Rebounded hard. Second half terrific defense.

Have not watched them alot but this year but what struck me was their lack of toughness. I thought Berry was good..what happened to him. No Buie on this team they reminded me alot of last years RU team who cant finish around the rim

No I mean hardy. While it is true hearty is the proper word when dealing with food. Rutgers isnt eating soup. Its playing a game and stepped up and fed under difficult conditions

Hardy" describes something strong enough to resist hard, difficult conditions, whereas "hearty" describes something friendly, full of energy,

Great recap.

As I pondered in Degaz recap:

Are Ace’s games against Indiana and NW the finest true away games by a Rutgers player in Rutgers history?

Only game I remember close is maybe Douby at St. John’s.

The great 76 team and 79 team were mostly on radio. Guessing Maybe James Bailey?

Didn't Douby have a ridiculous game up at the Carrier Dome his final year? James had a huge game vs. OSU in the Holiday Festival final at MSG, but that was a neutral court and still pretty local.

They scored 37 2nd half points.

There have been a few games this year where I felt the opposite where we played much better than the results......opposition making tough shots after tough shots. Northwestern missed a lot of open looks. Martinelli missing a lot of close shots he normally makes.

Northwestern was sad. That was a pathetic performance

If we were being honest...yes.

With that being said can't really blame NW too much for Bailey's points. Only thing maybe that could have been done is to be so close to him where he was forced to put the ball on the ground and drive to the basket.

However the same shots he hit last night don't normally go in at a rate that makes you need to stop it.

On offense they could have scored in the mid 80s if they knocked down shots. There were a ton of missed shots at the rim and late close outs by us at the 3 point line that we didn't hurt by.

Also where I think Pike has screwed up the most this season is the amount of switching we do. So many breakdowns. Tough when we have Dortch Grant Lathan and Ace on the floor. good teams are going to kill us (Wisconsin did).

If Ace's guy dribbles a few steps and a screen is close Ace stops defending and assumes someone else is taking his man. There were so many possessions last night where he had no idea where or who his was late in the possession.

Or just maybe our size and athleticism affected them. They have played and beaten Illinois , Maryland and Indiana at home , so not exactly the bottom of the conference but all top 9 teams. ACE shook them and we disrupted a lot of what they do and harassed Martinelli and Burkheuser into 9-30 shooting. They were 10-1 at home so almost unbeatable with only undefeated MSU having beaten them before we did last night. Think it was a good road win

I was thinking that Bailey game too and some of the St. John’s games but thought they were tourney games or Garden games. That Holiday Festival games stands out again but not really a road game.
Same with Corey Sanders v Indiana at the Garden.

Riggins getting some astronomical number at PSU?

I still remember Jacob’s dunk over big Purdue center and his interception at Minny.
