Just want to touch on some points about last night

Detachment helps alot. Being able to watch the game with no expectations and not getting frustrated and fretting over everything is a better way to watch. Even managed to doze off in both halves!

Game went pretty much as I expected. Washington has some good talent but not deep behind their starters and has been even more up and down this year than Rutgers with losses to Seattle and wins over Maryland. What was a posiitive to see was RU competing from the start so there was no hangover from the debacle laydown at Oregon. As sad as it sounds both teams had a lot to play for making the Big 10 tournament so both teams gave full effort there. It was a well played game back and forth and yeah neither team was interested in playing defense and it was all about offense but that is just the way its going to be. Do not expect Rutgers to play much defense the rest of the year. This was the blueprint game of Princeton and Nebraska where RU split. A better version of the Iowa game because Dylan showed up. At this point in the year where RU needs wins to make the Big 10 tourney, the all offense no defense style offers the best shot at securing these wins. Take the games for what they are. There will be no grinding it out in the Big 10 tourney expending energy. Its going to be about Dylan or Ace being superstars and getting enough contribution from the rest and the supporting cast not shooting RU out of game. Greene Rice take your stinkin defense elsewhere because you will not see it that I am sure of. Is it a true sustainable way to win...of course not, but it offers the best chance to win on any given night if that makes sense.

RU won because of a few reasons...

1. Dylan Harper had one of his classic games. 34 points, 9-18 fg, big time from 3 at 4-8, 12-14 ft, 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals. One of his finest overall games as a Knight. Washington could not stop him and if they tried to slow him down they put him at the line so great awareness by Pike and Dylan to keep drawing those fouls. He was the best on the court for sure and that is with the Huskies having 2 very special talents as well.

2. Dylan Harper was still on the floor at the end of the game whereas Osobor had fouled out playing only 26 minutes. Huge that Washington did not have him in overtime. Ironic that a Dylan miscue in regulation turning the ball over would lead to that inbound play that the Huskies muffed and Great fouled out on. Without Osobor the Huskies offense was limited and could not find anyone to step up in crunch time

3, RU made defensive stops...remember Princeton, couldnt stop anything. Well in the tight game here, I believe Grant forced the turnover guarding the inbound that landed in J Wills hands that allowed RU to tie and then in OT playing good D and limiting UW to one shot and then the D on the final play...heavy pressure around Boom forcing him to take a bad rushed 3 and perserving the victory. Shots and stops.

4. 9-19 from 3 point land....yes most of that was Dylan but take him away and they were still 5-11. J Will hit 2 of them and the one later was big time. Derkack hit one as well. What was notable was who didnt shoot 3s and thats a key here....RU has to have the right people taking 3s. Grants just one attempt very good, dont want him shooting 3s, not a good 3 point shooter despite his early success. Martini played 16 minutes, did not take a 3. Hayes 3 minutes no 3s, Davis 24 minutes no 3s. I think RU did very well in shot selection

5. Ace/Dylan Show....Ace was solid as well...6-13 fg, 5-9 ft could have been better 18 points, 8 boards did have foul trouble. You want Dylan and Ace approached 35 shot attempts combined and we got 33 from them. You dont want Grant/Lathan/Davis taking 8-10 fg, you arent going to win that way. It will be the Ace/Dylan show the rest of the way. Two very winnable games and two games that are likely rough goes

6. J Will played liked the J Will we all thought we had. 32 minutes, 4-7 fg, 2-2 from 3, That late foul shooting could have been costly at just 3-6, 3 steals, 13 points...will need this effort to beat Minny/USC

Washington shot 34-65 fg for 52% and still lost.

Lathan looks out of shape and vs top centers in the league is overmatched. Its not bashing its just reality. Purdue/Michigan will not be a good matchup for him.

Pike coached a solid game and his players in the right positions to make stops. The Harper play in regulation sucks but I think that is Dylan wanting to be the hero rather than what Pike wanted.

RU now with 6 conference wins has a little cushion and the inside track of making the Big 10 tourney. Looking more and more that Washington along with probably Penn State and Northwestern are the odd men out. One more win probably does it for RU to get to 7 wins but it would be academic by also beating Minny at home. A goal of 8-12 for such a disappointing season isnt a bad one all things considering. RU could track as the 12/13 seed which could give them a matchup with Indiana or USC and then maybe end with the 5 seed in the next round which could be UCLA or Maryland and obviously the former is preferred

One of the more interesting aspects of this game was that Rutgers won in overtime without making a basket. All points from the foul line.I'm very happy with the win on the road but concerned with defense allowing 85 points.Defense is all about effort and has been a strong point of the Rutgers coaching staff in past seasons.

good recap,

with regard to Sommerville, perhaps has never been required to play defense previously as he was always physically "superior" or his previous teams philosophy were just about outscoring the oppostion.

For a freshman, his offensive game is very good, I for one, hope he stays, under Pike's/Young tutelage he has the potential to be a very good big man.

He's a big boy for sure!

Good bullet points, @bac2therac.

I especially like this observation:
“Ironic that a Dylan miscue in regulation turning the ball over would lead to that inbound play that the Huskies muffed and Great fouled out on.”

It’s indicative that games are not won on stats alone. Winning plays have to be made, and in this case JWill (and Grant) turned a negative into a positive.

The same can be said for JWill missing the foul shot at the end of regulation, when we ended up with the ball and got the last possession. Yes, Dylan missed the hero 3-pointer, but we were given an extra chance to win without Wash getting last licks.

Suprised FIG is still watching this version of RU bball with how absolutely terrible the defense has been

We just let teams stroll through the lane for easy layups like 10 times a game

Defense last possession was excellent though!

Dylan and Ace now have experience and are healthy. Hopefully they want to finish the season on a high note and give us some magic to remember in the B1GT

Still hoping for Vegas Crown glory

Y’all are confusing out of shape with just plain sloth-slow. He practices or works out every day and he’s 18. It’s his amuscular body type. Same height as Grant, Dortch and Ace but no fast twitch. It’s also why he plays so small. He already is who he will become. Not a Big10 starter and with hopefully a real 5 coming next year he should get the talk.

Even his offense is soft. Can’t go left at all and uses his left elbow to clear space to get the baby hook off without elevating.

Just not athletic, even for his size. No mobility whatsoever.

When Sommerville is playing straight up post defense, he has become pretty good at walling up, although he really couldn’t handle guys like Queen and Osobor (who are tough matchups for even experienced centers).

His problem has been getting LOST on defense, either in pick and roll situations or when he has to provide help defense on dribble drives — in both of these situations, he loses his man and usually gives up an easy layup.

Yea he has shown more willingness to bang and play tough without fouling which is a step in the right direction

His help defensive is pretty terrible

He is a freshman though people! What were people's expectations? He's exceeding mine tbh

I thought he would need a year to lose weight and he came in already down a ton of fat

I thought it would take him a while to learn to score in the post against B1G bigs but he has been able to already

I thought he would struggle heavily defensively and he has

I did think he would be a better passer but at least he has the confidence and competitive nature to want the ball and want to score

Officiating was wild at times, but we definitely got the good end of the stick in this game.
I was wondering if anyone else made that observation. One of the crappiest refed games I've seen in a while (and there have been PLENTY).

Good recap. JWill played like the guy we hoped we would see this season, he actually delivered stability and winning basketball plays. Have not seen it much this year, but give him his flowers for last night as he delivered. At this point, I have no expectations with his team, only expectation is just play hard. Also hoping for some entertainment from Dylan and Ace as we saw the Vegas Dylan again last night. Maybe we get surprised with a big, surprising upset the rest of the way, maybe we don’t either. No expectations. Just play hard and show fight and let’s stop the revolving door layup lines on defense (not likely to stop happening but just play hard).

It’s not so much about expectations as it is about realistic ceiling based on the type of player he is. He just isn’t a Cliff / Myles type player. Not that style player is what I means. Never mind skill set. He’s not going to be a rim protector. Not every defense needs that but the style Pike has succeeded with has always had it. If we don’t get one, I predict an ugly future for next season.

We got a boat load of calls from the refs.
The block on Osobor (as opposed to a charge on Grant) was the play of the game. We got the call, resulting in 3 points and putting their star in foul trouble. If that call goes the other way, we probably lose the game.

I think he has good lateral quickness for his size but he lacks explosiveness. He'll never be confused for Cliff but that can be improved with a full offseason of on campus strength, conditioning, and nutrition. How much is up to him. No way you can say an 18 year old is physically a finished product after only three months on campus before the season started.

agree to disagree. athleticism, which he lacks completely relative to other Big10 bigs, doesn't change. Once slow always slow. he absolutely does not have lateral quickness or else on-ball he'd be able to stay in between his guy and the basket....but he can't.

Perhaps, but Osobor also got the call when he forearmed Sommervile to the floor

Also, I would love to know what the refs saw on Sommervilles 5th foul

Wonder if JMike would have gotten trashed for not saving the ball from going out of bounds after Harpers turnover if Wash won in regulation? 😂

Agreed an offseason of S&C will do him wonders
His offensive game is light years ahead of Cliffs even in his 5th year Alabama scored 98 yesterdays and Cliff played only 15 minutes and didn’t have a basket Of course Bama gave up 110!

On your game with this one for sure. Defense was definitely 100% better in OT as you pointed out. And the issue with Lathan is that he's not a true 5

Getting back to the allowing guys to just stroll down the lane thing, that has been maddening to me lately. I'm more of a soccer player, so maybe it doesn't translate exactly, but I was taught that somebody always stops the guy with the ball. I imagine there should be an on ball defender keeping the opponent out of the lane in the first place, but if he is lost or gets beat what is supposed to happen? Our other defenders seem to stay focused on guarding their man or boxing out, while an opponent just strolls down the lane for an easy lay up. I get the importance of guarding your man and boxing out, but if nobody stops the ball you won't have anybody to guard or box out, the ball will be in the net and the possession will be over. Is this some sort of strategy decision I'm missing, or are our defenders just not recognizing what is happening in time to react - over and over again?

Yes and it’s a big issue because of the style of defense Pike likes to play. Our system requires a rim protector.
