For a season promised to be televised in vivid technocolor with top 25 rankings, Quad 1 wins, and a rocking RAC night in and out, the Rutgers program and fans have been battered black and blue. Blue period...black comedy indeed. From their own self inflicted wounds early in the season to the most damaging in not being able to put a healthy Dylan Harper on the court for more than a few games, it a season that quickly fell on black days. Fans losing their religion. Negativity and sniping on social media. And so the Rutgers faithful marched to the RAC in their black t shirts and sweatshirts quite uneasy and possibly queasy about whether they were headed to a basketball game or a funeral. Likely to be another game without Dylan Harper and seemed like a ritual to watch the final nail in the coffin on the lost season of 2024-2025.

It cannot be easy for a competitor like Dylan to sit out basketball games. Has had to be a trying last month and likely a personal one of reflection. For Coach Pikiell trying to coach thru having to deal with the ire and rancor of a fanbase who were told dream big dreams and the harsh reality of NIL's ugly transformation of the college basketball world. Not easy to get through the meat of your season without the heart of the team in Dylan Harper on the court. Yet Pike somehow someway can always be counted on to pull out some juju out of his black magic bag. His uncanny ability to breathe new life in the almost dead. We have seen traces of fairy dust the past few weeks. The greater teamwork at Northwestern or the tough fight vs Michigan. Yes the canvass can do miracles and Pike is in the process of navigating his players through some dark choppy waters.

Chatter began building that Dylan Harper was on the court duiring pregame. Then confirmation he was playing and then the announcment he was starting. Dylan looked good in pregame. This was not going to be the Michigan State misstep. One could feel the energy build back at the RAC. Here we go. Let's do this tonight. The season may not be where everyone wants it to be but we are here and when goin' get tough, the tough get goin'. Rutgers got out to a silly start at 23-6! Are you kidding me? Illinois held to just 3 fg in the first 10 and half minutes of the first half. Brad Underwood was forced to use 2 timeouts and likely lost a ton of hair in a brutally ice cold dispassionate beginning. An impeccable start for RU relying on heavy dose of Ace and Dylan. Dylan was back...perhaps not at 100% but 90%. The RAC was doing its thing and showing off. Invariably no one expected Illinois to just lay down without a fight and they chipped away little by little getting the lead down to 6. It would be 8 at halftime but it was clear there was a momentum shift and that continued in the 2nd half. In total, Illinois would go on a 47-27 run over the course of 20 minutes that spanned midway through the first half to midway through the second half. The Illini wrested the lead away from Rutgers and at 53-50 that all too familiar feel of that dark black pit in our stomachs was ominpresent among the Scarlet Knight faithful.

What I always enjoy and appreciate the most about wins are wins where Rutgers has to win them more than once. The phenomenal start had RU up 17 and in control giving them a large cushion. They were outplayed badly during those 20 minutes but more important was that Illinois was just getting more and more confident and in rhythm. A team that has been so hot and cold all year, one never knows which one they would get. After a rancid 10-33 fg performance in the first half, the Illini went 14-20 fg in the first 12 minutes of the 2nd half. The game quickly went to big boy basketball. If RU was going to counter the Illinois run they were going to have to land punches back. To me the knock on this team this year has been they were somewhat soft when challenged...even at times with Dylan healthy. This team had every reason to fold. They lost momentum and energy. In most spots this season they had failed to deliver. Yet there were hints of turning the corner wasnt there? I mentioned after the Michigan game, RU was not very good but they were tough. Perhaps the first level of epidermis was being ready but during crunch time vs Illinois, several layers of skin were grown. Almost to the point by games end it became as hard as a turtle shell enough to be a defensive shield in the closing minutes. In the end Rutgers armor proved to be tougher and more durable than Illinois was despite the Illini being the ones battle tested. To me a turning the corner moment for the team, one that we all hoped would have occured back in December.

How did this happen? Well anytime you have the two best players on the court and you are in a tie game with 7 minutes left Pike has done his job putting RU in position to win. Its a good spot to be in. I get it that Brad Underwood felt good too. After all his team fought back from 17 and took a brief lead. His team was still humming along offensively and probably teamwise Illinois is deeper and has more talent overall. Its a bloody war of attrition. Lets see which one is going to last the night.

Well I mean for starters everything about this win was about getting Dylan Harper back. What a testament and tribute to this kids heart and desire as a competitor. Dylan is worth about 5 layers of skin...tough kid and played with full confidence not afraid. The crazy thing is that it did not look like Dylan or the team missed a beat. In the first half we saw the team with Dylan back in the lineup evoking some Vegas tourney memories. Dylan and Ace took turns running the show in the first half. After an Ace block and quick pass to Harper for a transition 3 that put RU up 27-11. Later I thought that Harper getting to the line for 4 free throws on the last couple of possession to have RU maintain a 9 point lead was a big swing there. In the 2nd half, Harper had taken only one shot in the first 7 minutes so its no surprise the offense was suffering. Dylan hit a 3 that put RU back on top at 50-48 after Illinois took their first lead since the opening minute. Yet almost 5 minutes later, Harper had only scored 2 free throws, if RU was going to win this game they were going to need Dylan to take it to another level and that he did. Perhaps the sequence of the year and possibly turning point of the game was Harper going into the Illinois bench after deflecting the ball away from Ivisic, saving it to Ace who would find a racing Harper in the corner for a thunderous 3 that woke up the RAC crowd to put RU up 66-62 and it seemed like RU although not up by much seemed to control the rest of the game. That play just epitomizes the kid. Harper would get a layup and two important free throws that put RU up 6 with about 3 left. I do not think anyone expected Harper to be this good so quickly in his return. 28 points on 7-15 fg, 3-5 3 pointers, an incredible 11-12 at the line, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals. An all encompassing superlative game and it really is shame we were missing that the last few weeks. Cannot cry over spoiled milk, no one is feeling sorry for Rutgers. Just savor we got him back and we can now compete in any game going forward. Winning well thats another question but Rutgers will in fact compete with everyone

Ace Bailey...18 points on 7-13 fg I believe had 12 in the first half but only 6 in the 2nd but it wasnt about his scoring. I was impressed with Aces development and maturity and it showed tonight. Ace of February 2025 is about more than scoring. He has answered Pikes challenge to commit to defense and it was a wonderful performance tonight. 11 boards and 3 blocks. Ace just 2 for 4 fg in the 2nd and didnt hit a fg the last 16 minutes...he didnt need to. The focus and detail to defense was just what Rutgers needed and it payed dividends down the stretch with several key boards. Using his length to just be a problem for the Illini forwards who never seemed to get untracked.

Pike trying desperately to get his players some rest had a lineup of Zak, PJ, J Mike..not sure if Dylan was still in there but Ace was out. Rutgers received the unlikeliest of back to back 3s, first from PJ on an assist from Zak tying the game at 55. Then a Martini 3 to give RU the lead back at 58-57 as the teams traded blows. I believe in an earlier sequence a couple minutes before Zak also took a key charge on defense. Just 18 minutes on 1-2 shooting and looking like he is playing through an injury. PJ would be instrumental in a key sequence with RU up 75-69 missing a shot late but following it up with his own rebound, extending the possession. Just 4 minutes by PJ but some of the most important 4 minutes you will see. Along with Zak filling a very important situation role and both players came through and have fought back and growing layers of skin. Imagine being counted on as a starter and then some simply atrocious play had sent Martini to the pine and even some DNPs. PJ who was a role player to begin with, collected even more DNPs. Its those little play that can alter the course of a game in a positive way seperate from anything the Ace and Dylan Show are providing.

Jeremiah Williams has been maddening to watch this season. Whether its the silly fouls, the flopping on the court or the poor shot selection, its just been a disappointing season and even in games themselves his play will range from erratic to outstanding. J Will struggled alot this game but delivered when it counted. 13 points overall, but hit 4 just pivotal pivotal free throws to keep the game even at 60-60 and 62-62. He put RU up 71-65 with a jumper and had some boards and a big steal late with RU up 6 that ultimately led to an RU bucket, His production both defensively and offensively was worth any earlier mistakes. J Will kept coming and keeps coming even when things are not always going right.

Lathan Summerville was not good in the first half and fouled too much. Yet Lathan was part of a key moment grabbing an offensive rebound off the J Will miss and did Pike run a play for him in the timeout to put RU up 8 and gave them an all important cushion with about 2 minutes left and they would never look back. Lathan composure stepping up when called upon and was also 3 of 4 at the line for the night.

After his steal leading to a bucket in transition like a jackrabbit down the floor for an and one, it looked like J Mike might have a game...he did, just not offensively, finishing with just 1-4 fg, 4 points, 4 boards but its his defense which continues to become better and better each game. Not doing too much and not shooting, playing that role Pike is defining for him on a healthy Harper team

Dylan Grant shouldnt be shooting at his volume and thats why his minutes have been cut 18 tonight....just 2-10 fg, got a big time dunk that put RU up 11 early in the 2nd half. Grant had 7 boards and is definitely getting better on D and an asset with his length. Just needs to stop jacking so many threes...1-6 tonight and his percentage hasnt been good last few games. Dortsch learning on the fly....11 tough minutes giving 4 fouls. Growing up like it or not. Acuff and Derkack just 9 minutes tonight and thats okay. This wasnt the game for them. Do not worry Pike will call on them at some point. We already know that JD has developed a bounce back resiliency from his performance vs Michigan State. Acuff wouldnt fit in the rotation with Harper and Ace as the main scorers and J Will able to do things on both sides of the ball.

As a team the Rutgers defense really had a turning the corner moment. Im not easily fooled. I say this because there have been signs everywhere....the last few minutes at Nebraska, the closeout at Northwestern, the battle shutting down Michigan in a loss. They shut down a hot Illinois team who had made 14-20 fg and limited them to just 3 fgs in their last 12 attempts and only 1 fg in the last 4:53 of play. What kind of skullduggery was this? Was this the same team that could not get a stop in game after game after game. The Princeton game giving me nightmares on how atrocious the defense was. Man this team has come a long way...have to appreciate how hard they and Pike have worked. if only..if only we saw this earlier, they might not be in the hole they find themselves in now. This is not your 2024 Rutgers team but is it too late.

The Penn State win was fun because it was the first and they had to have it and they barely held on after blowing a big lead. The UCLA win was nice but RU caught the Bruins at the perfect time. The win at Nebraska was joyful and in the moment. The win at Northwestern was mainly about Ace. This one though, this one was the most satisfying this year. This was against a team playing high level (at least in the 2nd half). Rutgers had to rewin the game and that is something that I have not seen from this program this year and they did it largely by making defensive plays and showing poise offensively crashing the boards and making the right shot selections valuing the possessions. Levels of skin I am telling you. Take this hard turtle shell on the road to beat the Terrapins at their own game. Not impossible and Rutgers is slowly coming out of the dark and finally seeing the light shine down.

Great write up...thank you! I find that I particularly love any review of a Rutgers sports victory that incorporates the word 'unllkliest'!!! 😁 GO RU!!!!

Nice writeup. The big fella on Illinois turning his ankle sucked for him but somehow was poetic justice for us. That said, I hope the kid is OK. I'm rooting for Illinois the rest of the way. I like their coach and I like the makeup of their team.

Really excited for this UMD game on Sunday.

agreed on the shots from Grant. Tough though when you are left wide open time and again and the ball comes to you. teammates have to leave him out there when he's not hitting just as much as him not pulling the trigger so often.

he's definitely helping rebound for sure. on ball defense is pretty solid. the off ball stuff though...yikes...needs to really understand rotations and concepts like helping the helper because he is allowing some really easy baskets and good looks by not being in the right spot too often.

Thanks Bac! Let’s fing go!

Agree with the recap about how we have not seen them win like this very much at all. When Illinois took the lead, I figured RU can’t win because typically this year when they hit that type of crossroads against a quality opponent, they lose the game, the defense collapses, rebounding disappears, etc.. But this was different, they were the tougher team down the stretch and made the winning plays, even though there was a good 10 minute stretch they could not grab a defensive rebound. This is what we wanted to see much earlier in the season, making plays to produce a win against a good team.

Let’s see what they can do, can they ride the momentum and turn this into a run down the stretch of making winning plays to produce wins consistently the rest of the way? We shall see if it carries over, but for this game at least, this was a team that made winning plays against a quality opponent.

good write up. At this point there’s nothing to lose. Either we are going to go on a big winning streak or be middling the rest of the way.

One of my biggest beefs with pike are the substitution patterns - I hated bringing in Dercack and Hayes midway through the second half, and Hayes was exploited defensively. And for Christ’s sake Jeremiah played too many minutes in the first half when Jmike had been a spark plug defensively.

Agreed on JMike. Thought Dercack gave us some good toughness when we needed it and Hayes did as well and looks like he got some confidence back. He was practicing really well.

I think your most salient point here is that we had to "win" the game twice. Illinois crushed us during that 20-minute stretch, knocked us onto the canvas with that 47-27 run, but the team dug deep, fought through it, and pulled themselves back up.

That final 10 minutes was a thing of beauty, a terrific college basketball game where both teams were throwing haymakers, and then finally Rutgers just took the game back in the last few minutes. This game showed that the team finally has Eye of the Tiger.

I don't know if we can keep it up. I've been saying since the schedule came out that this February stretch of 5 of 7 on the road is going to be brutal. Little did I know that it would be coming with us basically on the ropes after struggling so much.

Had to wait for the BAC review but worth the wait.

Other huge key to the game, RU won the game at the line shooting 28-34.

BAC is loathe to comment on Officiating but only reason that Illinois was in the game were bad calls and no calls. By far the most poorly officiated game and that says a lot. Ref defending ACE dunk was comically bad. Awful positioning by ref. Wouldn’t be funny if Ace got hurt, missed the shot and we lost by two.

Want Pike to start playing the officials more. We have two of the two most talented player in the country. We deserve some respect that we simply are not getting.

I also want Pike to implement a rule on every set that’s not a fast break. Every half court set, Dylan or Ace have to touch the ball. I believe there was a sequence where three plays in a row or three out of four plays where Grant missed a three, Summerville missed a three and Davis dribbled the ball upcourt and took a pull-up jumper from the top of the key. While these may not result in turnovers statistically, they still are and was very poor basketball.

Similarly have to get Ace more touches in the 2nd half. Too good not to…isolate, picks, give and go, inbound plays. Do something!

JWill is the ultimate enigma. Plays great D and the reason he is in there he makes clutch free throws and clutch shots. The 10 second violation was infuriating even if it might have been on shot clock operator. The fouling three point shot was inexcusable. Still slips way too much. Let him wear Nike too.

JMike shooting 50% from the line is why he will never be in end game. Defense was quite good and seems to have been re-invigorated. Offense not so much.

While Dylan saving the ball was highlight reel stuff, thought the difference in the game was back to back three’s by Hayes and Martini. Nobody saw that coming. Has to more demorsalizing or frustrating than when Dylan or ACe beating you.

Marvel at Dylan and Ace every game. Just so good. This game was great in that we fell behind and came back and won. Very nice win.

Last 4 of 6 away. B1G treats RU the same as all other schools. Yeah right.

May have given away a game playing MSU at Garden. Many won’t admit. A game I’d like to have had back. PSU away too. Guess can’t account for injuries but….

Won at Nebraska, won at NW, beat Maryland at Maryland last year.

Might be fun to sneak out of Maryland with a win on a sleepy nooner on Super Bowl
Sunday. Queen v Sommerville match up.
They are good and probably a tourney team but also can be counted on for an occasional clunker. I think we live in Willard’s head. Who can forget SHU dodging RU and playing PSU instead of.

Go RU!

Huge break for RU, he was owning whomever was covering him and RU had no answer, to that point Underwood must have been going nuts when Ivisic was going 1-5 from the 3 point arc

Play of the game for Dortsch getting his foot strategically placed there 😁 even though he came back, he was not nearly as effective

agreed on the shots from Grant.

Keep in mind that 3 of Grant's 10 shots where in the 1st minute of the game from 1 foot 😁

that said, of his 6 3 attempts, 1 was good, 2 were 1/2 way down and out, and 3 were just shite shots

I wish Pike had given him more minutes in the OOC portion, so that he may be farter along on the rotation comprehension.

I think what the staff wants is for Dylan to drive more or to be there in the dunking spot like the pass from Dylan for the poster . He doesn’t just have to hoist from 3 where he is being left alone. Now if in the summer he gets in the gym and jacks up 500 threes a day from the wings , well we would see the improvement and he would be able to launch without implications. The more he drives , the more fouls he can get on the other team , plus he is athletic enough to just go over someone and dunk it on their head. He has a lot of potential and will be counted on a lot next year. This year he has a role and although he can take an occasional 3 or two of them , his game has to find its way closer to the hoop. Plus of course improve the defense and get on the glass , both offensive and defensive.

Read article about Williams by Carino. Kid did not have a meal for a week. Hope he is close to 100%. And Underwood said RAC has been much louder. Wish that wasn't true.

Go RU!
Most poorly officiated game IMO was Texas A&M in Vegas. I was at the MGM and we could not buy a foul when we had the ball. Total fouls were 29 for RU and 19 for A&M. And I had the pleasure of watching a ref, I think it was Jeffrey Anderson, help one of A&M’s players off the floor during the middle of the action, not a play stopped by a whistle, but during the middle of game action so the player could get up and hustle down the other end to get back in the play. A&M shot 42 free throws to Rutgers 17 free throws. I know @Scangg was quite vocal about how bad the officiating was at the time, he might agree.

Nice work, Bac. But your statement that our turnaround is "too late"? Not so sure about that. A win @ the Terps is the next proof point, though.

I stand corrected!!

Right now I am rolling with the CCR song “Long As I Can See The Light” as the motto for the rest of the season. Technically, we can see some light right now, not a lot, but we can see some, let’s hope we keep the light on and increase it into March.

When he was 100% he was driving almost every time ok at the Alabama game and couldn’t be stopped he is at most 75% let’s hope he improves every game and doesn’t have a setback

Agree, officiating in that game was bad.

I was also surprised by this stat at Kennesaw: Dylan Harper with 0 (zero) free throws. Amazing when you see how often he took it into the paint and to the rim, as he normally does.

Yes, I know we still should have beaten them, but shite happens and we only lost by 2. Can’t convince me the guy who took 12 FTs vs Illinois was never fouled in the act of shooting in 35 minutes at KSU.

The bonehead plays by JWill are mind boggling this late in the season for a team captain and leader- the 10 second violation when he was not covered; the 3 point foul, shooting early in the clock during the last 2 minutes, the walking violation. He did make up somewhat for these with his foul shooting and intensity in the second half, but still could have cost us the game. BTW, we all have moaned about the team's foul shooting all year, but this game was clearly won at the foul line.

bac, your reviews are a treasure, especially after a win. One other thing after rewatching the game tape today- this was pointed out in another thread- Illinois was flinging elbows all night without a call and were rebounding by pushing off without a call . Ilovic was the worse, so I didn't shed a tear when he went out.

Read article about Williams by Carino. Kid did not have a meal for a week. Hope he is close to 100%. And Underwood said RAC has been much louder. Wish that wasn't true.
The crowd was very loud last night, probably the loudest I have heard in the last 2 years. Underwood can say whatever he wants but the last 5 min or so it was deafening and it definitely hurt them.

Thanks was curious because that was what he said and he has respect for the RAC.

Yeah he’s a very frustrating player but to me it’s pretty obvious that we don’t have an alternative who is a better option to play the 25ish minutes he’s getting alongside Dylan and Ace. Davis is already out there with him for at least half of that time (and sitting only when Pike is looking for a bigger stretch line up). I’m not sure how many games Acuff needs to be invincible in on offense with Dylan for some folks to stop campaigning for him to get more time. He doesn’t know how to play a supporting role on offense with a healthy Dylan. At least to this point. At least that’s what the statistics to date demonstrate as he’s scored a total of 6 points in games Dylan played with all when Dylan was on the bench since Columbia.

Acuff is the worst defending guard on the team. So for him to warrant time, he has to be contributing on the other end.

The write ups are still fine but there's way too many anti Grant and anti Sommerville vibes being passed around when it's woefully inaccurate.
.
The roster consists now of 5 freshman, a couple of other pieces and an erratic senior who needs to play consistent basketball in JWill.

First, in terms of Grant.....the one thing that RU lacked in the early portions of the season was competitiveness. That does not mean freshman mistakes aren't going to happen but it comes down to playing against a front line that leads the conference in rebounding. From the 1st possessions Grant challenges the 7 footer and gets rejected, gathers the rebound and goes up again, gets stuffed a 2nd and 3rd time.

Why is that either important or just a lack of awareness?? Because the kid is playing to his strength which is attacking the rim, with the goal to score or get fouled (FT shooting will need to improve as well).

He took 3 shots on one possession and took 3 threes in the 1st half and 3 in the 2nd half. More importantly, the comments about not shooting are 100% dumb in every way.....I want confident cocky players on my roster. So when we fast forward to the 2nd half, Dylan Harper has one decision to start the half.....do I throw a 25 foot bounce pass, backdoor to Ace Bailey?? Of course he makes that pass, he's Dylan Harper and he doesn't care about whether it's deflected or stolen, he's brash and bold enough to make the play and Ace converts.

Why is that important?? Because they ran 2 set plays for Dylan Harper, with execution....Harper drives to the paint and pivots to a cutting Dylan Grant, who was 0 fer in the 1st half.....the staff runs something and he challenges the big man another time.....he does not care if he gets his shot blocked, he's thinking, I'm dunking on you....

The corner 3, which Grant took, is also a play we run 30 times for Ace running around the screen for the corner 3, but we hit Grant in the corner, who was open....he missed the 3, but the kid is brash enough to not have stage-fright, in a spot against a ranked team, when RU needed points.

The top of the arc three by Grant was also a clean-open look.....if he turns that shot down, I would take him out of the game....you are here to produce, not be scared and looking for Ace and Dylan to bail us out.

Grant stat line could easily had been 4 of 10 for 12 points....Lathan also needs to shoot confidently, he is hesitating and he misses when he waits.....in the final sequence, there was no waiting of "am i sure I should take this?? Harper hits him and he scores without waiting or thinking.

That is my recap, along with a nice backdoor pass by Dortch to a cutting Harper.

The " lack of an running offense" comes down to 117 freshman minutes out of a possible 200, because frankly, they are RUs best cohesive players, with the skill, talent and ability to not know any better.....you're not supposed to roll out 5 freshman for almost 120 minutes per night and defeat ranked opponents. But, here we are todsy and the roster and roles look as good as they can, because the frosh are all playing. The slotting of others is more aligned because the freshman are the ones who can climb the glass and rebound and defend. We can't ask Acuff, Hayes, Martini or Derkack to battle front lines of Michigan, MSU, Illinois, Maryland etc.....

And we need a combined 15 points and 15 rebounds per game from the 3 other freshman the rest of the way to win games, at a minimum. My initial guess would be 20PTS and 15 to 18 REBS, but that would be very aggressive, considering we sat on Dortch and Grant for so long.

Onto Maryland and let the freshman play through mistakes.....its the only upside left for the last games.

Yeah - this pretty much but I’d probably take Martini out of that grouping. He plays pretty physical when used at the 4. I don’t see him as a major minute guy but he belongs in the rotation. We’re going for positionless basketball in the absence of a true center. Lathan has been rebounding better but also fouling more.

Davis will get the 6-8 minutes with Dylan out plus another 15-20 minutes where we decide to go with a more guard oriented focus. Whenever Davis is out J Will is going to be in with Dylan because we need another ball handler and someone who is physical. Then you have the others Lathan, Grant, Dortch, Zach splitting the minutes at the 5, (spelling Ace) and playing the 3 whenever J Will and Davis are not in together. Thats basically the rotation. Jordan and Hayes some situational spot minutes.

Acuff gets in with Davis when Dylan subs out.

Martini played his best game at a RU player vs Illinois....I know the Nebraska game created headlines but that's hitting shots....any player can hit shots over a 30+ game season, we saw that with Derkack vs MSU at MSG.....Zach Martini competed for post defensive position, he got into the paint.....he took a critical charge, which stopped an extended run by the Illini.....that is the type of role I expected to see, the hustle plays and being scrappy. We need that vs Maryland, Iowa and the rest of the year. Play like your hair is on fire.

He played very well against Michigan too.
We held them to 66 points.
If his three D’s start to fall.

Funny you say that about the shot clock operator. I was wondering if anybody else noticed. It didn't "feel" like 10 seconds to me. But then also, the score bug on the broadcast quickly flipped to 30 seconds then back to what I presume was on the actual clock at the RAC. It was under 4-5 seconds I think. But those score bugs are directly connected/reflective of what's on the actual clock.

A little odd regardless of its impact.
