Game Thread - Rutgers vs Hartford

Wow, that was great come back. Way to grit out a win. 6-0 baby!!!

Hartford shot lights out. That's going to be our kryptonite this year but not many teams will be as successful from the field as they were today. Almost 50% from 3 is insane. I know a lot of people have criticized our ability to close on shooters but that's nuts.

Man this game really speaks volumes about this team. They were able to get a great comeback win on a day where we were off all game and Hartford was shooting out of their minds and we still found a way to comeback and win. Crowd was great in the later part also helping the players along to victory.

promo code BOGOMB and BOGOWB for tix any any remaining home men's or women's bball game. Tix are for the 300 level or 200 level ends.
thanks..I thought I saw other thread that it was only for section 211. but good to know.
I am still trying to get re-linked to the email updates though. I'll reach out to the RAC or something.

Pike needs to unleash saunders and Johnson offensively and defensively you have 2 reallly dynamic, upbeat guys with quick quick hands. He is hand cuffing them
You can unleash them without them being out of control

This is exactly right. They shot outside their norm. They hit a few open threes, but many were contested. A few were prayers that went in. These are games you are supposed to win when you have a day. But we found a way. This is huge moving forward.

What makes you think he is handcuffing them?

Hard to imagine a bunch of Big Ten teams doing better than going over 11 (ELEVEN) minutes without missing a basket, and shooting the type of 3-point % we just saw .. I mean there's no 4-point basket. Granted they will probably play better defense but Hartford still ran a very good and very tough 2-3 zone wit a big man in the middle and Corey & Nigel could still drive and squiggle around him ... if we can win with the offense our opponents had today, doesn't matter the name or color of the jersey. We may surprise some people.

I know we were lazy and sloppy much of the game with turnovers, poor focus foul shots, and less aggressive defense. Mix in some poor calls and a team that could have thrown it in backwards falling out of bounds mid-court...the usual recipe for the WTF loss.

But didn't you just feel they could turn it up at some point? Corey and the crowd and the coach deserve major creds for that finish. He had the right guys there on the floor at the end. Never give up. Love it. LEARNING TO WIN. [cheers]

They have options in the 200 level and 300 level, but just in the corners. I bought 4 tickets in the second row of 207 for next Saturday's game. $10/each.

I'm sorry but there were a ton of posters in this thread who were absolutely pathetic.

This will be a huge confidence booster for these guys. They know they can't let games get out-of-control like today, but if they do they know that they can scratch and their way back into contention to win. What a finish!

Complain about how piss poor the coaching effort is some more [eyeroll]

When Hartford hut a 3 from the RAC it looked like they couldn't miss. Gutsy effort to pull it out.

20-5 to end the game. Gutsy and gritty effort over the last few minutes. Hartford was 13 out of 17 at one point in the second half. Maybe some of those could have been contested more but there were some whistles that made the "D" a little tentative.
The team was sloppy at times and seemed to be out of focus.
But, at the end, they ratcheted up the pressure and Hartford couldn't close it out. We sure do not win this last year.

Nonetheless 6-0 is 6-0.

Did you watch that half court offense?? Your 7 ft center is handling the ball 12-14 ft from rim and nobody covering him. Your 2 slicing dicing guards are standing on the outside passing the ball around the horn. Your whole offense was predicated finding guys in the corner to hit a 3 or Freeman down low. Hartford"s zone was not even good but we did nothing to press the zone until the last 4 minutes or so in the game. We were satisfied with standing there throwing the ball around the outside and letting them stay in that zone for 20 plus seconds a posession. if we went uptempo we would have blown them out by 20+ . they were hitting all those 3's because we did nothing to make them work on the defensive end. Funny how shots don't fall when your legs are not totally under you. All the guys on Hartford had fresh legs, all their 3's were right on. Press them a little and make them work offensively and defensively and they pull the trigger a little quicker than they want, the legs are a little tires etc...

Maybe that was Pike teaching these guys how to win a half court game...maybe teaching them how to win the tough ones rather than go up tempo and blow Hartford out

Stuck at work. Glad I couldn't watch and that I just looked at the Final. Saved me my first ulcer of the year!

A win is a win fellas, we'll take it and run with it!

We must be watching two different games.

This is what team offense looks like. And that works better than watching one guy go 1 on 5 as your base offense.

If you want to call that a leash, fine. Every player in the country is on a leash.

I just read this thread from beginning to end. A Shrink would diagnose the fan base as depressive/manic. Remember how we let DePaul back in at the end and many posters were wondering why we couldn't put a team away? Well, you need to learn how to win and today was a lesson in how to do that. Small steps. Regardless of how this year turns out most of this team returns next year so last years ship has sailed and we are on an entirely new journey. It looks like it will be fun. But there will be many bumps in the road so let's not get too far ahead of ourselves and just enjoy these moments as they happen.

I think you're both right. Letting Corey go uptempo and freelance probably would have resulted in a bigger win today but is not how you win vs better competition....

And Nigel Johnson must have Hartford with the points to earn a little Christmas shopping cash. Putrid.

There goes our NCAA hopes.

Time to start drafting the "Fire coaches" thread :cool2:

Not real happy with the coaching down the stretch

Team has to learn how to win, nobody should be surprised.

Inexcusable loss, but when you see teams like Indiana lose to Fort Wayne you realize it's a little more difficult than you expect to avoid a wtf loss

This will hurt fan support. Buzz was just starting to build.

^^^^
Not picking on you guys, just love to see the early reactions in game threads that become ironic afterwards! ;P

I would have liked to see coach press that up-tempo button just a bit earlier. I also thought he could have done it early game to get them in rhythm. I did see him try by going to the press around 10min to go but then some questionable fouls (and that one by Williams) kinda kept us back on our heels.

Corey is just fine. He did plenty of freelancing last year and you saw where that got us. We have a more balanced team this year and Corey is running the show admirably. We got plenty of open looks against their zone. They just weren't falling at times. The high/low between Gettys and Freeman was very effective, so don't complain that our center is 12-14 ft from the basket. That's how we, and many others run zone offense.

It's a Rutgers fan special. They never learn. Seems like the same guys every time.
